Tipping Gone Wild

I work in an insurance agency as a customer service rep. Maybe I should put one on my desk. I get your ID cards to you right away, maybe you should tip me too! I agree, it is getting out of hand.

Technically your only suppose to accept tips if your paid a "tippable wage" ie. the 3.18 a waitress makes. Delivery drivers here make less than minimum wage as well as they are tipable positions. You wont find a tip cup at any local dunkin donuts here, as the district manager put a kabosh in that, they're paid an average of 8.00 an hour, thats NOT a tipable wage. They also were not reporting these earnings on their taxes, which in turn..well you know the cycle.

To the mom wiht the lifeguard the other day...I had a mom come up to me tonight with the same sentiments you had. (no tip was accepted LOL) A little girl- well she's 10 wanted to jump in the deep end, but she was unsure of her ability to do it herself. Mom doesnt swim, and since I was there, not actually working, but with my own daughters, I replaced the guard in that area, and actually got in the water with my rescue tube and assisted the little girl. She was fine, and I knew she was capable of doing it, as she swims at the pool every day all summer...but she didnt have the nerve to do it......I actually ended up with a line of kids to jump in, just knowing I was right there, when they came up from the water was enough to put some over the fear....my guards and WSI's will tell you they certainly are not doing their job for the money, its for the look of satisfaction on the kids faces when they master a stroke, or a dive..(okay and the tan). no tips necessary, they love what they do!

They have a tip jar here at our Moe's (Southwest Grill). What is the difference in them rolling up my burrito and the people at McDonald's making my burger? I don't go into McD's kitchen and tip all of them, so I surely won't do it at Moe's.

The only fast food type place that I do tip at is Sonic. Since those poor girls (and some guys) are out there in the heat, rain, cold, etc. to bring my food to my car, I'll give them a tip (nothing huge, but like a dollar or so).

I grew up with my Mom waiting tables. I tip, I tip well, any server in a restaurant or bar. I draw the line at the coffee joint, the drive through, the mall food court. I did tip at cold stone, because they put up with my kids multiple changes, and earned a song for the tip.

It has gotten so out of hand. I just paid 4 bucks for that coffee and I'm supposed to give you more?

Well there is a water ice stand near me and they don't even pay the employees minimum wage They said they can do that because they get tips. There is a tip jar at the window that they share. Never heard of this before. :confused3

In New Jersey, they actually have a place on their Traffic Citations for tips. If you feel the officer was ecxtraordinarily professional, you can add a tip to the citation.
:rotfl2: Next they will be asking for tips when you send in your income tax.

I had an officer give me a warning instead of a ticket the other day. Now THAT is what I call deserving of a TIP.

When my DD and her DH have an overlaod of visitors down in their travel trailer they'll often come up here to use the bathroom.. Would it be crass to put a "tip jar" near the bathroom door?

Or perhaps some of you more creative types could tell me how I could attach it (in a fashionable, attractive way, of course) to the toilet tissue holder?

:teeth:

That's a great idea! Perhaps you could hook it up so that they must tip to get the tp!!!!!!!!!!! :rotfl2:

Well, I'll pipe up as the vocal minority, but I feel very passionate about my coffee and my barista ;) First of all, do you tip your bartender? If you do, you should be tipping your barista.

Baristas tend coffee and non-alcoholic drinks, instead of alcohol, but like the bartender, they are learning drink formulations. There can also be quite a bit of apprentice time and training involved in becoming a good barista - especially at the high end and artisan coffee shops. If you've ever been to Italy and had a perfect espresso shot pulled from a seasoned barista - you know what I'm talking about. A good barista goes through months of apprentice work (in Europe it can be years) practicing the art of making a proper espresso and mixing the drinks correctly under the watchful eye of an experienced barista, before they even touch a main barista position. Then every espresso shot is hand tamped (btw, that's forty pounds of direct body pressure packed into that chamber with your ground beans in it and applied with the exact twist of the wrist to produce a perfect shot). There are several different elements that can affect the quality of a shot, and the barista knows how to "adjust the grind" and all the little tricks to make it just right. After the grind goes in the chamber, the barista watchs the shot for quality and timing to make sure the crema builds properly as the shot comes down (so you don't have the taste of bitter espresso). They temperature regulate the milk and watch the texture of it, so it pours perfectly out of the pitcher and lifts the crema, and if they are really skilled, they'll present it with beautiful latte art on the top of the crema - hearts, flowers - all with the flick of their wrist. People take this art so seriously there are World Barista Competitions - much like Iron Chef of espresso drinks.

I think it's gotten out of hand too. However...

We recently went to Moe's Southwestern Grill for the first time. The people there were hilarious and REALLY hammed it up for us. They had a tip jar there and I gave them a dollar. Just couldn't help it.

As far as Starbuck's and such, no I don't tip. On the other hand (I know, I know, I'm inconsistant), there is a sweet guy that works at the Starbuck's at our local Barnes and Noble. He is precious!! I used to drop by there after work and pick up a particluar book and some coffee. I really got to know this guy. He even noticed I was wearing an engagement ring one day and we chatted about it (no one else was waiting BTW). He has been there forever. Sometimes I will drop something in the tip jar when he is there. :)
