Tipping at the Drive Thru Window

I guess this is the kind of attitude that we can expect from the generation that expects to be rewarded for breathing.

We went to a free-standing Sonic the other day. I TRY to avoid them because of the tip expectation - it makes me very uncomfortable. We do have Sonic in the mall and they do not expect a tip, so sometimes the kids will get food from there.
Anyway, I went through the drive-thru and there ISN'T a pick up window! :scared1: You pull up to a sign where a person has to walk out of the building with the food! :headache: She then had to go back inside the building to run my credit card, and I had to wait for her to bring it back. And every single car in the line was wasting gas while we waited! It was ridiculous! I didn't tip the girl because I figure we are never going back there so I won't get a reputation as "the lady who doesn't tip". :rolleyes1

I'll tip the carhops at Sonic. Sometimes I think they earn their tips more than a server at someplace like Chili's because they have to dodge traffic.

If the server comes to me while I'm comfortably seated, then a tip is warranted. If I have to go to a counter where the server is stationed, then no tip.

I've had people at Sonic (the ones who take food out to you) ask if I needed change back. :confused3 I never know if I'm supposed to tip there or not, so I avoid going to Sonic altogether. If I do go, I use their drive-thru because I don't feel obligated to tip in that scenario.

If I have lose change giving back. Then I will leave that. I also tip at Sonic they bring the food at to me in so I don't have to get out in the rain, cold. hot snow.

I would tip at Sonic, just a small amount. I have not seen tip jars at any of the fast food places around here, except for Subway (if that counts). I would not tip at Subway or any other fast-food place.

My DD 17 works at Sonic and she appreciates the tips!!! :thumbsup2 She made over $50 one night in tips alone!!

:lmao:

If kids can make the hourly wage plus $50/night in tips what's the motivation for college?

The fact that working at Sonic is not the life she wants is the motivation enough for my DD.

I actually work at chick-fil-a and I find it suprising they are asking for tips. I mean I understand that it is minimum wage and all, but most of my friends work for well ABOVE minimum wage at their fast food and grocery jobs. I would never expect, or accpet a tip for what I do. I believe it is even against the companies policy to accpt tips. The only time I ever recieve[and am allowed to recieve] a tip is if I am doing a delievery, like taking someone's order accross the mall. Even then I usually get one MAYBE 2 dollars, and I never expect one. That also only happens maybe once a month.

So everyone, eat more chicken. :rotfl:

Tip at the drive through??? Not a frickin' chance.

But I DO tip when I get "Curbside" service (like Outback/Applebee's/Chili's) when I order and someone brings it to me at my car. Not a full 15% or anything like that, but usually $2-3.

I worked drive thru and I never put out a tip jar.

Some people did tip, but I just thought it was strange.

I got paid minimum wage to do my job, i stood at a station and rang up orders. I think some people should have to pay a "rudeness" tax that goes to my pocket because they were so mean. But thats just me.:)

I got $10 from a guy once....he came back everyday and tipped me $5. I was slightly creeped out.

This is exactly where I draw the line too. I admit that I will occasionally tip where I pick up my pizza (they don't deliver) because we go there so much and would like to have a good reputation there. But I saw a tip jar at Quizno's that I refused to tip. Now, I love the food from Quizno's. But why on earth should I tip???? For following them around their kitchen and picking out what I wanted them to make for me? For getting my own bag of chips for my tray? For filling up my own drink at the drink station? For finding my own table? For never being checked on once while I was eating? For getting up and getting my own refill? For clearing off my own table and throwing it in the trash? No, sorry, but I don't think so. Heck, maybe if I take care of myself so well there, they should offer me something as I walk out the door. ;)

Wow, I haven't seen that at a fast food restaurant yet, maybe I just don't go to them often enough! :rotfl:

I do tip car hops 10% or so. I do not tip other fast food workers, Starbucks counter service employees etc

I never get curbside pickup but the other night I went to Applebee's with several friends. We stayed a long time and tipped well(I think I tipped about 27%). Just as I was about to leave DS dropped DD off so I asked our server about getting a to go order. He had just clocked out so sent another server to take the order. I tipped him 10%

Speaking of Sonic I went last week and went through the drive thru (not even to the pull up spots). I ordered a Sprite (that's it) and it was $1.57. All I had were quarters without using my check card so I figured 7 quarters wasn't that big of a deal. I jokingly said to the guy who came to bring me the drink "Sorry about the quarters." He gave me an "Are you serious?" look and bitterly took the quarters while venting to me how much he hated when people paid in change and TIPPED in change! You're being tipped and complaining about how you're getting that tip??? I had given him a $1 in quarters (I was feeling generous) for a tip on top of the $1.75 I had already given for the drink. I wish at that point I would've asked for it back!

I was a server for years and was never picky how I got my tips.

I don't tip at any of the counter jar places. I also don't tip at Sonic. I pay by swiping my debit card on the menu board when I order so there's never a "keep the change" situation. Our Sonic pays well above minimum wage so I feel no need to tip.

I honestly don't understand how some people can keep there jobs. :confused3 I work in fastfood and people pay with change all the time. I have no problem with it. The only time it can be frustrating is if there is a long line and your manager is staring you down trying to get customers through. Ussually the person appologizes, and I try and make a joke out of it or explain how people do it all the time and to not worry.

Wow - that is ridiculous!

I would contact the company, I am sure that it is against their policy, and the managers need to know what these people are doing. It's tacky. Not to mention that since they are not a tipped position, I'm sure it does not get reported as income which is also illegal.

I'm sorry, but this comment really rubbed me the wrong way. I am part of the generation you speak of, and I have always worked hard at my job and not expected anything extra from it. Just because I am younger than you does not mean that you can make a rude and sweeping generalization about me.

I worked with several older women at Denny's one summer. I was literally the only server who came in every day they were scheduled with one exception- when I broke my arm, and I still showed up at 6:30 am with the doctor's note in hand and the cast on my arm. The older ladies who worked with me called in at least once a week, smoked in the kitchen on the clock (against policy) and took twice the amount of time on their breaks leaving me, a 17 year old, to run the floor at a 40 table restaurant. I could easily make sweeping generalizations about the laziness of the older generation, but I know that these women are not representative of people their age. So please, quit judging an entire group of people based on the actions of the few.

I'm sorry to get so up in arms, but I'm so sick of hearing about how horrible my generation is. It's like you're saying I'm a horrible person, and you've never even met me.

I don't tip at those jars and have cut back on the sponsoring everyone one at work. I just can't afford it - they all have good cause but I can't afford it.
