I saw a real interesting tip on one of the HGTV shows which may be handy to the veggie gardener. Mice are a little-discussed, but very destructive garden pest IMO. Last year one got into my garden early in the season and tore through everything. Nothing grew back - spent the season watering bare stalks, hoping for the best. Anyway, I've learned (from this show) that mice are extremely allergic to mint. They specifically mentioned peppermint. If you regularly get mice in your house, the guy suggesting planting peppermint outside and mice won't even come on your property. Something called peppermint oil placed in small bowels throughout the inside of the house also keeps them out.

Problem w/mint is that it grows & spreads like nuts. Not particularly attractive either. I'm thinking about how to approach this, but I plan to give it a try.

Then again...D-Con works well too!

I lived in duplex in Mid Michigan for one year. The landlord had planted peppermint around the house. This particular plant attracted blow flies. It was awful :( If you walked past the area a huge buzz would start and this cloud of flies would rise up..yuck I was told these were peppermint plants so I can only repeat what I was told, but I don't think I would plant them near my house.

Oh yea, D-Con is sounding a little better.
