Tip Question.....

When I pay with my debit card at the local pizza place (when I just go in and get a slice to go), there's a line for a tip! I always draw a line through it. I'm not supposed to tip, am I? All the kid does is get my slice from the warming area and put it in a box for me. Not much different than McDonalds, and I don't tip there. But still I feel awkward not writing a tip in when he's standing right there!

I also noticed the same sort of tip line on a receipt at Color Me Mine, and I could NOT figure out WHY?!?? We go in, pick our pottery, pick our paints, and paint it. They fire it when we leave, we pick it up a week later. Why am I supposed to tip??

I would not tip in either of those situations. My guess is that because it is a retsuarant, the tip line prints automatically on every transaction.

As for color me mine, they do parties, and you probably would tip for a party. The tip line is probably programed to print automatically there too.

I always tip a dollar. Working in the service industry is a hard job, and most of the time the pay is terrible. One dollar won't break me, so that's what I tip for a slice of pizza. It sure beats me doing the shopping, and baking, just to have a slice!

Some of the machines that businesses use will automactically print the tip line. It doesn't matter if it is a fast food joint or a bowling alley. Just make sure if you are not going to tip, draw a line in the space so no one can go back and add a tip after you have left.

I would not tip either in this case. Most of those slips are set up pre-printed. I do always put a line through it and total again at the bottom so no one can add to it!

I have noticed that in parts of New Zealand that have more overseas tourists that we also have the tip line on our till receipts.

However here, its just a way to try to get more money out of tourists that are used to tipping as we do not tip here. I just put a line through it - are they crazy thinking I'm paying extra for a tip when they have to pay the staff at least a legal minimum wage? That's why it appears to costs so much more to eat here in restaurants as the menu price has to cover the staff wages and also includes all taxes.

I think its just a standard feature on the software rather that an expectation.

I agree, zero tip. I was a waitress through college for several years, and earned all of my income via tips. Waitstaff does not make minimum wage, as most people know. However, tipping the guy making a sandwich, or heating a slice of pizza, or cooking you a pizza makes no sense to me. In the sit down restaurant I worked in, never once did I experience someone wanting to tip the cook who prepared their food. These people get paid at least minimum wage, and it is their choice to work there. How much should someone be paid to slap some meat on a roll and wrap it up? I do not feel obligated in the least to tip.

That being said, I also use older tip guidelines for waitstaff. These days everyone is stuck on 20% being the norm and 15-18% for bad service. Come on, I would have been living large if I got those kind of tips for bad service. It used to be 10% for bad service (tipping is necessary in most every case), 15% for good service, and 18-20% for excellent service. I fully understand that servers work hard for their money, so do I. I also understand that the menu prices go up over time, giving the servers a natural raise, as 15% of $12 is more than 15% of $10, so I don't need to give the servers a higher percentage of my bill.

I have the utmost respect for servers, however, I cannot justify by any means tipping 20% to indicate excellent service, when in fact, drinks are not refilled, apps and dinners appear within minutes of each other, plates are not cleared, server disappears after plates are dropped, only to reappear to drop the bill. By tipping 20% to this person, you are telling them that what they are doing is right, that their service was not only acceptable, but outstanding, and contributing to the vicious cycle of BAD SERVICE!
