Tip for people who hate big drops on rides!

Someone wrote that there aren't any big drops on Space Mountain. Is this true? I, too, am a big drop chicken. I love Splash--it took me years to be able to go down the drop with my eyes (sort of) open. I have to practice deep breathing toward the end of the ride to prepare for the drop. The rest of the ride makes the drop worth it. I don't have any problems with BTMRR (no big drops) except that it rattles my brain and gives me a headache;-)

My daughter (12 yo) has recently turned into a roller coaster freak and went on Space Mtn. by herself on our last trip. I felt awful, but was too terrified to go with her. I hate, hate, hate big drops.

What does everyone think? Is it worth going or will I be terrified out of my wits and regret it?

Please advise.

Thanks for the tip! I hate the big drop on Splash, but endure it for the rest of the ride and because my girls won't take no for an answer! I even have to raise my hands so I won't "spoil the photo". Mind you, I'm going to look a bit daft with my chin on my chest and my arms in the air!

Does it work on ToT? I've ridden 3 times, but I've told my lot I'm never doing it again. My girls have ridden it so many times (over 100 each), they reckon they don't 'lose' their stomachs any more. They're probably right - the launch on R'n'R doesn't get me any more, but I've no intention of riding ToT 100 times to find out!

sweetp0618 - Space Mountain has a couple of fairly big drops, or at least they seem quite big because it's dark (by the way, for those who recommend closing your eyes - don't! I used to close mine, but I've found you feel the drops far less if you can find the courage to keep them open) . They're not huge - just big enough that you catch your breath just as you feel you can't take any more - swoops more than plunges. The ride's quite bumpy, too, not smooth like the newer coasters, but I don't think you'll be terrified out of your wits.

I'm the biggest coward there is. I rode Thunder Mountain and came off feeling very bad. Can't ride the roller coasters, the thought makes my stomach jump! I can just about manage Pirates! However being the wimp is handy, because I become the packhorse, with bags and sweaters etc! Maybe I'll try this tip on Splash, woe betide if it doesn't work!!

I've always been the wimp in my group too. PoC makes me queasy, but I still go on it of course! Before every new ride, I ask everyone in my group, "Are there any drops?" If they don't know, I won't ride it until someone else checks it out first. I can handle spinning just fine, it's the drops that make me want to lose my lunch. :crazy2:

I don't know if it works on ToT, I was too busy screaming my head off to remember to put my chin down! My biggest problem with ToT wasn't the drops so much as all that "up and down" started to make me feel sick. Anyone with motion sickness beware of ToT!

As for Space Mtn, I don't consider any of the drops "big", but others might. None are worse than Splash, that's for sure!

Hi, my name is Flyball, and I am also afraid of huge drops...

But I have done all of the mountains, and the drops on Space Mountain are really not that bad. Just when you think you're not going to be able to take anymore, the track turns (which is a good thing). I definitely had a much harder time with the Splash Mountain drops (inside and out), especially because I couldn't see the indoor drop coming! I may try this ride again with the new suggested "chin-tuck technique!"

It's interesting how some people react to drops and some don't. I have one daughter who loves them and one who, like me, hates that feeling! I'll have to really convince the one who's afraid of them to try Splash with the chin tuck!

Same here, TOT drops are not nearly as bad as the ascent, the atticipation kills me... urg! I really hate Dr. Dooms, I went on that thinking I could be a "big girl" and try it... LOL, I screamed every word in the book when it took off, incase you've never seen it... it's a huge tower they sit you in seats with you legs hanging, your kind of inside (building wrapped around the sides of the tower), they fill it with fog, a loud vouce shouts something scary and then flashing lights and YOUR OFF... straight up at a scary pace, I thought I was going to fly out of the seat and into the atmosphere... then as soon as you hit the top, you drop again, and then up and down a few times... OMG, never again...lol!

Btw, I am a member of the hate drops group. POC is scary enough for me...lol! We had passes to SW and BG for two years and my fear always kept me away from the "cool" rides. Haven't been on Splash Mountain since 2001, even though we have passes... =o(

That is so interesting. The only thing that keeps me from riding coasters are the drops. I can't stand that feeling in my stomach. My only question is, if I do this on RNRC will I be able to keep my head back so it won't whip it around and give me whiplash? Or do you have to take your head off the headrest to put your chin to your chest?

One more question. Does anyone know why the first part of RNRC you feel that thing in your stomach for the first few seconds? Are you going down a drop? I can't tell cause it's pitch black but that feeling makes me feel like I'm gonna die.
I'm fine with the ride after the initial take off!

Um, yeah you are and you are going to love it!! HA HA HA:p

I'm going to have to remember this one! I'm always hesitant to ride Splash Mtn. because of the drop. For some reason, big drops on looping coasters don't bother me. I think it's because they have shoulder harnesses and I know I won't fly out! (Heh! The idea of me beating gravity is hilarious!) Also, if a coaster twists a little on the way down, I can handle it. I think it's the going straight down to my doom that gets me.

I doubt any unique method could get me on the ToT again, though. I tried last time, but I found out what the chicken exit looks like.

No drops on RNRC, after the launch you go quickly up into some type of loop, forgot the name, but your upside down not dropping.

You don't need the "chin tuck" on RnRC because it has no drops. You get that feeling in your tummy the first few seconds because you are accelerating so fast, but your going flat along the ground (the acceleration is cause by very powerful magnets, so they don't need to drop you to get the coster up to speed). It's like doing zero to sixty in a car, then once up to speed you go straight into a loop. DO NOT tuck your chin on "take off", you just give yourself whip lash, and it only works on drops, anyway. Keep your head back for the whole ride. Try to keep your eyes open, too, the best part of the ride is the themeing!

O.k. color me stupid, but you can't do the chin to chest thing on RNRC cause you're not dropping, but you can do the chin to chest thing on rides you do drop on. Is that correct? I'm only asking cause I get that same tummy thing on the beginning of RNRC as I do on coasters with drops. In that case wouldn't the chin to chest thing work on either? Did that totally not make any sense?
Any hoo, if I do the chin to chest thin on a regular coaster, does my head come off the head rest to do this or do I still keep it all the way back just pressing my chin down to my chest?? Cause I am gonna try this and I don't want to do it wrong and break my neck:worried:

Funny that this thread was started as I have been doing the chin to chest thing for years - as long as I have been able to go on rides!!

I do the chin to chest thing on RNRC too for the take off. I thought the reason why you feel like the way you do is because of weightlessness?!?

I can handle any and all rides with drops using this method. I agree with another poster about the really big roller coasters that have the initial drop that is bowed out rather than straight down - you do not get that feeling in your tummy!!

Another thing to remember is the drop is over so fast and you can truly handle anything for a few seconds to enjoy the rest of the ride.

Take care and enjoy all the rides - even the ones that DROP!!

Lisa
