tip for long lines

Fair enough, but why do you say so? They're still a distraction from what is around you, from enjoying all of the parks & the people there. Why are they different and from what? I'm not being snarky -- I really want to know! :listen:

I myself don't really know what a Tomagachi[sp?] is but it sounds like a virtual pet. I also would prefer to look around absorb the atmosphere, but our family's youngest (who gets bored so quickly I think he could be ADD) really needs something to entertain him. I think that a disney trivia game is completly different from game boy and little playstations and such. ::MickeyMo :Pinkbounc. Simply because its smaller and interactive and Disney. But thats just me and not all people would need something like that. Me, I love just to look around and talk to strangers in line.

I plan on stealing my sister's idea from her trip a few years ago. I'm going to bribe my kids while in the parks, to get them talking to people in line. I'm going to encourage them to get people's autograph's, not the characters. (At 10 & 7 years old they THINK they're too big for the character's. :smooth: ) I told them I'd give them a dime for every person they find from a different country and a nickel for each different state. My niece had a blast doing this on her trip and met so many people! I think I may offer a reward for every hidden mickey too.

side note ~ why I love this board ~ I have friend who's in his thirties, has gone to WDW every year HIS ENTIRE LIFE, and has never heard of hidden mickeys!!! I was asking him if he finds them and he looked at me like I grew another head. I just think it's so neat, and can't wait to go search for them!

My biggest concern with the video games and stuff in lines is the NOISE - I hope these have headphone jacks in them so you wear headphones? Or is everyone around you subjected to the endless noise that most of these games make?

I think most of the audio stuff at Disney is WAY too loud, so I carry earplugs with me that i use on a lot of rides (Dinosaur is definitely one).

Do I need to start wearing them while i'm waiting in line to avoid the video game noise? Or am I mistaken about the audio on these games - maybe they don't make noise or play a song over and over again (regardless of the audio level)?

My son has a Gameboy Advance and his isn't loud at all. Maybe its because of the games he is allowed to have though. We don't allow the violent games so they may be louder. My son's are mostly the racing ones and a few other. I honsetly don't think they would distract someone waiting in line. But their are earphone avaliable for those gamesets. However, we won't be bringing his into the parks (We might bring it down for the plane ride) But if we do bring it he knows he has to wear his headset because he knows not everyone wants to hear his game playing.

On a side note, we usually are talking to all the people in line too. :earsboy:

JCW---try Frosty the Snowman...we play the "real" 20 questions and this stumps them everytime!
Our tip for avoiding long lines...go in low season! :rotfl:

1. Has anybody tried carrying some of the Disney Trivial Pursuit cards? I just got a game off eBay for that very purpose. DTP has both kid and adult cards. I figure to put them in a ziploc to protect them. New, the game runs $25 on Amazon.com.

2. Great list broken down by age in a book called "Hidden Disneyland and Beyond." (We're planning a DL trip for Dec 05). 20 in the "all ages" category and 14 for the "6-90" category. The list is at the very beginning of the book and I liked it so much I paid $14 for the whole book, just for the list!! If you are more inclined to select a few than buy the whole book, check it out at the library or your local bookstore. Author: Lisa Oppenheimer.

3. Meeting people is a great way for DS(5) to practice his introduction and conversation skills! At a wedding in April, he went to EVERY SINGLE PERSON in the room at the rehearsal dinner, introduced himself, DH, and me. "Hello, my name is Dale. These are my parents. . . " followed by "What is your name? (reply) Nice to meet you!" What a riot!! :rotfl:

4. Along those same lines, many kids need a good lesson in geography--I know I do! LOL! :rotfl2: A small (8x10) folded map of the US and/or world would allow people to point out where they are from. Surely there's one you could print from the internet, right?

Keep those strategies coming!

Good Heavens I wish more parents would teach their children how to talk to people. I don't remember hiding behind my mom too much, but it's always amazing to me how many kids over 7 get the luxury. And to be so poised at 5 --well done!

As a frequent business traveler I would heartily encourage you and your son to take and use headphones if he is playing video games on the plane. I love kids (have two preschool nephews I adore, volunteer with high school youth at my church) but when I'm on an airplane after three solid weeks of 12+ hour nights (and I've been up for 24+ hours by the time the plane lands) the last thing I want is to even think I hear is the repetitious sounds of video games (or the thumping bass from the guy next to me with his ipod turned up way too loud). Even if you keep the volume turned down very low, some of those noises can still greatly annoy people (especially if they're already tired and cranky).
Thanks.

Please don't apologize & please don't think it's because you're tired & cranky. NO ONE wants to listen to someone else's buzz & ping. It's annoying not just on flights, but on 20-minute subway rides as well!

I took my four kids to WDW last spring break.I agree that the time in the lines was spent meeting people and soaking up the atmosphere but there were times that other distractions saved my sanity.Waiting for Fantasmic for an hour and a half was much more bearable after I pulled out the gameboys for the boys and a notebook and crayons for my DD6.They were only used a few times but I will be taking them the next time we go.BTW I always made sure that the games were on mute.
I will be looking into the Trivia game.

There is a small electronic game called '20 questions' (or at least I think that is the name). the cost is about $15-20 and you can find it at Target or Walmart etc.

.

We got this too! It was great for killing time in line.

It seems that some of dis-ers are extroverts and like to talk to people in line and some of us dis-ers are introverts and don't want to interact all the time (as it is draining) and would prefer something to keep us occupied.

I really like the map idea! Great thing to take back to school and show kids in class too! You could just highlight the states of people you met!

We bring walkie-talkies in the parks so if we get seprated we can find each other. (Well, duh. LOL :teeth: )

We listen to other peoples conversations on other channels. :earboy2:
It's pretty funny, and is an inexpensive way to kill time.

I love the map idea!! That would give the kids some "school work" while they are missing classes. (no flames please)

We've taken small bottles of bubbles. They can be fun but you have to be aware of your surroundings. Some people don't appreciate them! :confused3

We bought the hand held disney game but it never did the trick for us. It spent more time in the bag then being played.

Keep these tips coming. We need them. :earboy2:

A few months ago when San Diego had a Disney Outlet store, I came across three decks of Disney Trivia cards that came with a clip that hooks onto a backpack or fannypack...I paid a whopping 3.99. I am saving them for our trip next year. They are super cool...One was Princess themed, the other classic Disney characters, and the last one was Winnie the Pooh. Wish I would have bought more, I could have helped fellow Dis'er out. Check out your local DOS if your lucky enough to have one...
