Any timeshare rental advice? Budget is important so we were going to stay at pop but now I am looking at a time share rental we won't know if the is availability until the end of March (for end of October/nov) but it looks like the AKL value studio is only 100--200 more than pop. My daughter would lose her mind to be able to stay there and frankly so would I :) I am just nervous about the whole thing. Any advice?

When you rent DVC points, it's not like a standard timeshare rental. You rent points from a member, who makes a reservation in your name. It sounds like you are talking about renting from a non-AKV owner at the 7th month window. There is almost zero chance a value studio would be available at that time. There are very few of them and they book up very quickly by AKV owners at their 11 month home resort window. You might be able to get standard view though. Check out the DVC rent/trade board and read the sticky at the top about renting DVC points. It can be a great deal but you need to do your homework.

I own at AKV and the only value studios available for all of October and November 2015 are a couple of single and double nights, so if your trip is for more than 2 nights those studios are taken.
The value studios at AKV are very popular because they take so few points and there are very few of them so owners of AKV tend to book them right at 11 months and owners at other resorts rarely are able to reserve them when their booking window opens at 7 months.
AKV standard view studios are still pretty available and at Jambo the view is of the pool or partial savanna.
If you want to reserve a hard to reserve villa then it helps to start planning more than 11 months before you go.
Have you looked at David's DVC rental site? He has a great cost calculator if you are curious about how much more renting a deluxe DVC villa would be compared to a value resort.

Yes, I did contact another site, she told me I could get a studio but if I wanted to pay less (14vs 16) I should wait until 7 months out. I had been under the impression that they went very quickly but she said she thought she could get something March 30th. ??? It was Kate at the dvc rent,a store. I didn't notice there was a specific thread for is duh! I will move over there and read. Thanks...

We rented DVC reservations before we actually bought DVC and both times we had a wonderful experience. There are risks and you need to know what they are. After you read all about DVC rentals, I would look at David's rentals. He is a member here at the DIS. We have used him to rent out our points when we couldn't use them and they were very easy to work with. Also keep in mind that there is one bed and one pull out sofa in a DVC studio. You also do NOT get daily mousekeeping with DVC. I'm not sure if those things matter to you.

No way you'll be value. Maybe she means she charges less money pp if you book at 7 vs 11 mths? Even standard view at AKL in a moderate season like Oct/ Nov can come out to just a bit more than booking a regular reservation. And remember no tax on the DVC rental. I am unsure what you are concerned about? Just about renting pts/DVC in general or availability? If you're worried about availability, keep you POP reservation until you know exactly what you can get at AKV and for how much.

Oh just getting scammed, or that it's new and unknown to me. The issue wiht davids is the money he charges to do the search, we only want AKV so it seems if he finds a match at another resort he keeps that deposit. I could have read wrong. I have a month until our 7 month point. I had a friend of a friend who was going to sell to me for $11 a point but then he found out his wife already sold. Too bad!

I haven't used Davids so I can't speak to them.........as for DVCRental..............they did the search prior to any money changing hands. I didn't give the $100 until I selected, which wasn't so simple..........I got my 4th choice of room (not anyone's fault........just how it played out).

Doug :goofy:

For David's DVR, as long as you don't select alternative options of rooms, when you do your room check request, they'll return your deposit if they're unable to secure your room.

I'm working with David's now and they do NOT charge a premium for booking before the 7 month window. They do for some resorts, but with AKV being so large and presumably David's having a lot of AKV points for sale, they don't impose a premium for booking this resort early. I'm working with them now, in the process of renting an AKV standard studio for 3 nights the last week of October. There was not any value studio availability. Great experience with them so far, and yes, the $98 deposit is refundable if they can't secure AKV for you.

It's my understanding that there's only about 10 value studios on the whole property, and they tend to go at the 11 month mark. They are in a good location in Jambo House and the only difference between value and standard studios is the size of the room.

OP, there is almost no chance that you will get a value studio-- they are usually snatched up at the 11 month window by DVC owners but renting DVC points can be a great way to enjoy a deluxe resort at a discount. Good Luck!
