OK so I have a friend who came into some money and wants to purchased timeshare. She was talking to me because i own DVC. I do not believe that DVC is for her family. So if not DVC what timeshare company would you buy and why? Thanks

We own both DVC and Marriott. We have gotten a lot of mileage out of the Marriott. A lot. We love it because of the quality of the properties and the trading value. We've been to San Diego, Hilton Head, Spain, Williamsburg, various Orlando properties, Phoenix with it.

However, we own a week with them. It's my understanding that they are no longer selling the weeks (you can get them resale) and now selling points.

I would suggest Wyndham points...but RESALE only. You can get them for literally pennies in the dollar. Just don't buy them through Wyndham.

She should join the timeshare board at Tug2.net. It is like the Dis for timeshares.

I would stick with the big 3 hotel chains, Hilton, Marriott, Starwood. They all have excellent reputations and you can use your points for their hotels. I would avoid companies (such as Westgate) that are time-share only.

We've owned with Marriott for 12 years. They are great. And they are now moving to the Points System for those that prefer it. (We're sticking with our deeded week in Sports Season and not changing over to Points).

We're also sticking with our week. We're not interested in the points at all.

Looks like, very soon, we will be looking to get out of our time-share, which DS kind of inherited from his parents.

Something specific, like DVC for a Disney lover, might be okay...
But a timeshare is a different story.

Since we have this timeshare week, we looked into moving up to Wyndham Points. We read the fine print, and it was NO WAY.

RCI has given us so few trading value points for our week, that we can't use it to anywhere decent, worth going.
Our nice two bedroom in a top mountain resort barely got us a little one bedroom, with no amenities, a couple of miles from the beach. Seriously.
Wyndham and RCI are just not the kind of company that I want to do business with.

Anyhow, by the time you pay your annual maintenance fee (which goes up every year), membership to RCI if you want to exchange for any other resort, exchange fees, etc... etc... We figure we could spend that money to go wherever, whenever, we want, without the incredible hassles.

The above poster is correct, if, for example, they wanted to buy into Wyndham (which basicly is only worthwhile when booking a Wyndham property - worthless for anything else) pay literally ten times less to buy from somebody OTHER than a Timeshare Sales Shark.

Send her the link to timeshare users group- think it's TUG.net
Tell her to read as much as possible on that site and never buy from a developer, always buy resale.

Then tell her to put the money under her mattress and instead, rent condo vacations from www.vrbo.com or www.skyauction.com

She won't be sorry ten years from now.

The Hilton Grand Vacation property I've been to was very nice. They don't have the range of locations that Marriott has, but they do have NYC.

I'd say none since timeshares are the issue that generates the most consumer complaints with the Federal Trade Commission.

We're longtime DVC'rs, but Marriott seems to be very well spoken of over on the DVC board. If your friend just wants a week or 2, I'd definitely look into them.

I have to say, each time we go to HHI, I'm intrigued by the fractional shares available there. That seems like an affordable way to spend a month or two in a warmer location when we retire (long ways off, but it's fun to daydream)

I have a friend with 2-paid for
One week at the beach in Alabama
One week in New Mexico ski resort

After 5 years tired of both and cant sell:rolleyes1

My vote is a resale Starwood. We own three of them and have been incredibly happy with them. Tell them to go to TUG pay the 15 bucks and read up.!!

Go to tugbbs.com. Not every timeshare is for everyone. Buy where you want to go. Buy resale.
