I have to renew it by the 20th, but I'd rather not spend the money if there's something just as good (or better) that a computer illiterate person like me could download for free..;)

It's important that it's a very, very good program - because I use my computer for some of my banking; online shopping; - and people are always sending me junk with viruses attached to it.. (Luckily my Trend has caught 99% of them so far..)

Any suggestions?

TIA..:goodvibes

Many ISPs provide free AV protection. Where I live, both Qwest & Comcast provide free AV software with their subscriptions.

Others, like AVG, are free for home use.

I don't have any useful data about which are the best, but free is a good price.

I work in the I.T. industry and I use AVG on all computers that I own, and recommend it on every computer that I work on. No Anti-Virus is completely foolproof, but I stand by AVG.

Everyone has differing opinions, but that is my 2 cents.

I got sick of paying for mine and the father of one of my son's friends (who is a knowledgeable IT guy for Target Corp) said AVG is the way to go...
and FREE!

Never had a problem. Well, once it thought something was a virus that wasn't, but never actually had a problem!

AVG Free!

I had Trend for a few years and got 2 bad viruses. I now use the free Avira for anti-virus.

I have switched all my computers to Microsoft's Security Essentials. It is free and works great. I have tried a lot of the free ones and I like this one the best. AVG really slowed the my laptop down.

for those recommending AVG do you use the free version or a pay version??

I stick with the free version because the pay version adds (in my opinion) a lot of unnecessary features. A real-time scan is often times all you need, and the protection features it offers aren't worth the added cost I don't believe.

We've been using AVG free for years now.

::yes:: 2 years ago while I was getting my laptop repaired the techies at the shop recommended AVG free. It was a small computer repair place and they could of tried to sell me any of the ones they had for sell in the store. But two of them recommended AVG free, been using it every since on the desktop and the laptop.

I have used AVG for many years. Lately it has gotten a bit harder to track down the free version. I think they are trying to get us to buy it and I do not blame them but if you search for the FREE version and then carefully check which link to click on you should be fine.

As others have said most ISP's offer free virus protection, usually Norton or another well known brand. I like AVG better. Never had anything sneak through there with their daily updates.

I also use Ccleaner and other free programs. Just make sure it is a legitimate program and you download from a reputable site.

Mo money for the DIS!

Same here. A computer tech told my mother to use AVG. We had been using something else, but when it expired, we also switched to AVG. I actually like the free version better because (as another poster said), the paid version has too much "stuff".

Thanks all! :thumbsup2

I'll have to see if I can track down the free version of AVG - and then hopefully figure out how to download it..

Will I have to uninstall my old Trend Micro so there's no interference with the download?

We just dumped Trend Micro and updated our software to Bit Defender. It found a trojan and a virus that Trend Micro missed.

Ditto from with with AVG. I work in the school district and even their computers have it.. I am sure they have the full paid version though. I have the free one & it is 110% better than Norton's..Norton's that you pay for.

DH recommends Microsoft Security Essentials. It is a free download from the Microsoft website. He says it is good and is using it on all of our home computers. He knows a lot about computers and we very rarely have any spyware or viruses. You might want to try it before you buy anything else.

Quick questions, if I currently have the paid AVG (its about to expire) do I have to uninstall that and then download the free version?

It is very easy to get when you go into CNet. Here is a direct link to it.

http://www.cnet.com/1770-5_1-0.html?query=free+avg&tag=srch;a I have always downloaded mine from there. I also get other free and useful downloads from them.

to be on the safe side, I would. I know if you try to download it when you have any other virus protection on it, it tells you to remove it prior to installing the free AVG
