How far in advance should I start looking to rent points for a DVC? I want to travel in Oct 2008 so should I post now or wait until nov when it is 11 months out?

You should look now, because that is a very busy time at most DVC resorts, and you will want the person you rent from to call right at the 11 month booking window.

Jencp2001 - thanks for asking this question. We are also planning on going in October 2008 and are looking at the possibility of renting points.

Dianeschlicht - October for DVC members is really a busy month :scared: ? Right now, we are looking at the possibility of renting, but won't be able to do anything until about 1-3 months down the road.

Yes, October is busy, but as long as you aren't TOO particular about which resort, you will be fine booking within the 11-7 month period before the trip. Studios in the BWV and BCV area will be toughest to get.

Unless you want one of the following, you should be fine as long as you book before the 7 month window opens:

* Standard view room at the BWV
* Guaranteed Boardwalk view room at the BWV
* a dedicated 2 bedroom with two queen beds in the second bedroom (as opposed to 1 queen bed and a queen sleep sofa in the 2nd bedroom)
* a Grand Villa at OKW or BWV

Of course the earlier you can book, the better, but there's no need to panic if you can't arrange for someone to reserve as soon as the 11 month window opens. Once the 7 month window opens, the DVC resorts fill fairly for October - December stays.

Right now, we are looking at a 1 bedroom suite in OKW, BWV and BCV, and comparing the prices. I've seen an average of $10 to $13 per point on the Trade/Rent forum. DH has seen as low as $8 to $8.50 per point on that forum. We're trying to get a ball-park figure based on those prices.

I love the fact that a washer/dryer is in the one and two bedroom suites. The kitchenette would also come in handy as well.

Best to work with the $10 - $13 range if you are crunching numbers. Generally, offers in the $8 - $8.50 range are distressed points - they are about to expire or something else limits the use. Often we see people offering $8 points about now. Unfortunately, they are virtually unusable - there are few to no rooms left for reservations in the period of time before the points expire.

Remember, points do you NO good. The member has to have a reservation or be able to make a reservation for the time you need it.

I would figure on around $12 pp. Being that it is a busy time of year and booking out between 7 and 11 months means the points will not be distressed and you need to find someone with points at the reosrt you choose, therefore worth more to the owner. Not to say that you can't find someone in the $8 range. Good Luck.......planning now is is a good idea...

Thanks for the advice. I was figuring the cost based on $10 per point, where as DH was calculating based on $8.50 per point. Neither of us knew that the lower end were for points that are about to expire. Looks like we'll also need to figure out how much it will cost us based on $11-$13 as well.

I have to admit, it's seems to be cheaper renting DVC points compared to making reservations ourselves. Based on what we have figured so far (at $10 per point), everything is pretty much under $5,000 (including the DDP for all of us and park tickets with the taxes added). Making a package reservations ourselves for two rooms with a moderate or even a deluxe is well over $6,000 !

Renting DVC points this time around with Grandma coming seems to be the way to go for us. If the dates and points are available when we are ready.
