Time for a new vacuum cleaner - what to buy?

Well, both of our vacuum cleaners bit the dust this past week. We have an old one that we used as a back up. The other one was a Hoover that I loved and was only 7 years old.

Any recommendations for a good vacuum cleaner that won't break the budget?

Normally, I'd recommend a Dyson because I have one and LOVE it.

But, my mom (who is VERY hard on vacuums) recently bought a new vacuum and it seems to work almost as well as my Dyson plus it has this awesome retractable cord feature which I am a bit jealous about. LOL

I know its a Hoover and she got it at our local Walmart for under $150. I was very impressed at how well it worked and my mom loves it.
