Bull Pucky.

It was Satire. Yes, it was to make the point, but the FSM was meant to be the slight it is perceived as. That is what Satire is.

Period.

Satire Noun:

1. A literary work in which human vice or folly is attacked through irony, derision, or wit.
2. The branch of literature constituting such works. See Synonyms at caricature.
3. Irony, sarcasm, or caustic wit used to attack or expose folly, vice, or stupidity.

The FSM communcated effectively what the anti-faith crowd is saying.

The anti-science crowd is so easily offended

I'm not much of a professional football watcher anymore, but from what I've seen love his enthusiasm for the game and his religion too. It isn't always pretty, but he finds a way to win.

Liked what Bill O'Reilly had to mention in his article this week. For some reason Tim Tebow is mocked for his religion. And yet we glorify some questionable characters often. It seems that we can have things backwards to me.

...So what's going on? There is no question that secularism is on the rise in America, and the media is happy about it. Openly religious people like Tim Tebow are often mocked. You are quickly branded a zealot if you talk up your faith in public. But if you act like one of Caligula's running buddies, you are often glorified as cool and "with it." South Beach is in, Lourdes is out, assuming you actually know what Lourdes is.

But the churches themselves have to share some of the blame. Too often, the person preaching in the pulpit does not have much to say, especially to younger people who are looking for life guidance. I mean, St. Paul had the Corinthians mesmerized, but back then there was no internet, no Blackberrys, no cable. Paul had the stage to himself. Not much competition in ancient Syria.

Today, the challenge is to get the attention of the faithful, and that takes some doing. Christmas seems to be a good place to start. Jesus changed the entire world in less than 35 years. How did the guy do it? Talk about a great narrative. What did a baby born into poverty possess that persuaded billions all over the world to believe in his philosophy? There are about 1.2 billion Christians on earth today, 17% of the world's population.

Something to think about on the birthday of the most influential man who ever lived.

Another perceived slight that isn't. FSM was created in response to the pushes in several states to sneak creationism teaching into the public schools under the guise of "intelligent design" and push evolution education out. Considering that of Americans in the 12 largest Christian denominations, 89.6% belong to churches that support evolution education, there is no way the origin of the FSM is anti-Christian.

. I sometimes cringe at the way my Christian brothers and sisters engage with the rest of the world, and I see the whole FSM thing as pointing out some of that absurdity. I don't really see evil in it.

Loved the Tebow thing video, clearly he has a sense of humor-proof that you don't have to have yours surgically removed when you become a Christian.

Loved the article. Loved those videos. Seems like a very nice young man.

Expert: Tim Tebow Overshadowing Several Of NFL's Other Religious Players
Tuesday, December 6, 2011 8:35 am
Written by: Ben Maller

Tim Tebow has become the poster boy for religious devotion in the National Football League, but other stars have largely flown under the religion radar.

The managing editor at Patheos, a website devoted to religious issues, told USA Today that Tebow may not even be the most vocal Christian on the Broncos. "It is odd that there are more outspoken Christians on the Denver Broncos like Brian Dawkins. It is odd that Tebow has become this figure," Patton Dodd told the national newspaper.

Pittsburgh Steelers star Troy Polamalu is most often mentioned by fellow players for his spiritual devotion, according to Dodd, who authored The Tebow Mystique. Polamalu, famous for his long hair and huge hits, actually prays during the action.

"I often think about Troy Polamalu, who you will hear Pittsburgh Steelers players say is the most religious athlete in football," Dodd told USA Today. "He crosses himself before every play and sometimes after. He prays during plays."

Polamalu, 30, one of the NFL's hardest hitters, has won two Super Bowls with the Steelers and has been to six Pro Bowls. Born Troy Benjamin Aumua, he legally changed his name to his mother's maiden name of Polamalu, which he had gone by for 15 years following his parents divorce.

On a quest for religious guidance, Polamalu decided on becoming an Orthodox Christian after spending four days living with monks in a monastery on Mount Athos, a peninsula in Greece.

The Steelers star convinced his wife to convert to Orthodox Christianity in 2007, the same year he took a religious pilgrimage to Orthodox Christian locations in Greece and Turkey. Polamalu named both his children (Paisios, and Ephraim) after legendary Greek Orthodox Christian Saints.

“Football is part of my life but not life itself,” Polamalu says. “Football doesn’t define me. It’s what I do [and] how I carry out my faith.”

While Tebow, the son of missionaries, lives the evangelical Christian life, the Steelers star said in an interview that he's cautious not to push his religious beliefs onto strangers.

“It can lead to resentment, and that is not what you want,” Polamalu said. "There is also a sense of arrogance sometimes when people are really hearty, evangelizers, and that is opposite of what faith is. Like, ‘I know this better than you.’ There are a lot of pitfalls to that."

Both Polamalu and Dawkins were named to the NFL's All-Decade Team for the 2000s.

crossing oneself before every play? that is over the top don't ya think?

I'm sure Mr. Tebow is a nice young man. But all this hype. . .well. Matthew 6:1-5 rings in my ears.

“Be careful not to do your acts of righteousness before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full."

And that's all I'm going to say. :rolleyes1

Tim Tebow will be judged by his heart, his intentions--so if he has foundations so he can brag or look good, God will know just that. If he has the right intentions, God will know that also. It is why we should leave the judging to God and ultimately will.

If you do something wrong and no one ever knows, does that mean you got away with it? God knows the truth and while you think you've gotten away with it, in the end, you will answer for it. That's the truth about God that believers hang their hats on--that God judges our hearts. And so I believe God will judge all the good and the bad equally--whether it is what Tim Tebow does in life or another NFL player or Walt Disney or me.

once again, it is the media doing the damage. he'd rather fly under the radar

I totally agree. More power to you, Tebow! You didn't set living dogs on fire, you didn't go to jail for having an illegal gun and shooting yourself in a drunken stupor, you don't have multiple kids from multiple one night stands ect like many of your football brethren. You thank you God, and as long as you don't start pressuring people to join your religion or act like everyone but you is going to hell. then keep doing what you're doing if it makes you happy.

"Mommy, why is everyone mad at Tim Tebow?"
"Because he kneels down to silently thank God when he plays football."
"That's all??"
"That's all, baby."
