Tim Burton Takes Another Stab At A Disney Classic

Helena Bonham Carter plays a great Bellatrix LeStrange in the Harry Potter movies so I think she could do Maleficent. Frankly, she's an amazing actress and has the depth to do all kinds of roles.

As for Tim Burton in general, I'm not a fan of the Nightmare Before Christmas but I have really like his more recent stuff like Big Fish and Charlie & the Chocolate Factory. And for me to say that I like Charlie & the Chocolate Factory is saying a lot since I was SO AGAINST the idea of Tim Burton redoing such a classic! Now I'm very excited about the upcoming Alice in Wonderland movie. Although he is a bit weird and dark, I think his movies are really visually appealing!

I was always under the impression that the Burton version of the movie was much closer to the original book then the 1971 film adaptation. Most of the criticism I heard about the Burton movie was that it was so much different then the original movie, which was kind of the point.

This is all based on what I have heard and read on the Internets because I didn't read the original book but the Internets is always accurate, right?

Oh yeah, you can count on the internet to be completely true ;) I haven't read the book either ... do I have to? *in a whiny voice*

In September 2006, my kids and I had the extreme privilege of meeting Tim Burton and his wife in Kensington Market here in Toronto. They were in town for the Toronto International Film Festival, and we saw them exiting a vintage clothing store.

We spent over 2 hours walking around the market, and he was extremely interested in my son's (then 6) point of view. One thing I especially remember was when we went into a cheese shop. My son at the time only knew 2 kinds of cheese; strings and slices. Brendan tried about 8 different kinds of cheese, and Tim asked him what he thought of each.

Tim also said we were very lucky to live in Canada, because he just LOVES snow. If you notice, most of his movies start with a snow scene.

He gave me and my kids some very valuable advice which I do my best to live by: "Be more childlike". Not childish, but childlike. He said "Imagine a puddle on a sidewalk. An adult will complain and walk around it, whereas a child will get excited and jump in it. Life is too short not to get excited about puddles."

I love that quote. So true.

I must say I enjoy Tim Burton's work. I've heard people say they don't like it because he only does one style (which I don't even believe that to be true) but if you find something you're good at- shouldn't you roll with it? I think this would be a really interesting film. I love movies that show the other side of the story.

I just read that rumors are floating around Hollywood that Angelina Jolie may star as Maleficent...could be interesting :3dglasses

Yes, I just saw that too! I LOVE Wicked so this could work. But would viewers think it was too much like or stealing from Wicked? Just a thought...:confused3

Can't wait to see what happens! Tim Burton def makes things interesting.

I have to say I am intreigued by this movie! I have already heard it is going to be a very 'Wicked-esque' version of the story, which is nice, but they will have to work hard to make it different.

I like the idea of people not being painted black or white, good or evil, because this world is full of shades of grey. I think it's great for kids to understand this as young as possible, and maybe a movie like this will help!

I doubt Helena B-C would be Maleficent, because she is rarely the title character, but usually the second most important or a strong female lead to a male starring role. I doubt she could fill Maleficent's shoes, even with the outstanding work she did as Bellatrix Le Strange in Harry Potter. I am pretty sure Tim would of found a choice part for her already.

I am a big fan of Tim's style (although I wasn't a huge fan of Alice, bit too much style over substance), and I hope he could really do something great with this story!

I love Tim Burton's work, but I think he should stop with Alice in Wonderland. I loved that movie, but let's keep some Disney movies for ourselves.

The idea of a Maleficent focused Sleeping Beauty film would incredible. However, I'm hesitant to think of what he would do if he focused too much on the love story aspect and Aurora herself. He definitely could destroy a beloved classic.

As someone who adored the original book, Tim Burton was much truer to the book than the '71 version. Notice how it is called 'Willy Wonka and the chocolate Factory' in the '71 version is because Dahl hated it so much. Then again he was asked the write the script, but didn't complete in time. I still think Gene Wilder is great, it just isn't the book I loved!

Tim Burton's version is almost word perfect in places. Yes, I got my old copy of the book out and checked some of the bits and the song sequences, and they are a reduced version of the original. Plus Felicity Dahl, his second wife, was one of the executive producers of Burton's version, to keep it as true to original genius as possible.

If you're worried about Tim Burton not being true to original stories, Disney has had a long line of movies where they "Disneyed" the story line.

Personally, if you like Tim Burton, you know what to expect going in. Most of his movies are in the same gendre, with the possible exception of "Pee Wee's Big Adventure."

I just read in Entertainment Weekly that Tim Burton signed on to do an animated movie version of The Addams Family. Too bad it's animated, I could definitely see Johnny as Gomez. Cada Mia!

Oh I LOVE this! I always wanted to be Wednesday...

I think it sounds cool. Maleficent is one of my favorite villians.
