I was given a link to a website that will simulate tilt shift photos for you for free - Tiltshiftmaker.com - just upload and play around and download the final file. They have Flickr group, too. Fun stuff.

Anyway, I played around with a couple of Magic Kingdom shots just for funsies. Anyone else want to play? :)

Excellent site! Thanks for sharing. Here is one of mine, I'll have to look through my photos for good ones to use.

That one is perfect - looks just like an HO model train photographed in macro! Sweet!

Some great ones in the other shots from everyone, too. I just think these are fun. :thumbsup2

Everyone's photos are wonderful.
Just found the tilt shift website today so I didn't have too many photos at hand to try right now. Here's 2:

It is hard to find pictures that maximize the effect. I thought this one was pretty cool:

It generally works best on images on wide angle images, such as landscapes and cityscapes. Basically, it works on images that would naturally have lots of depth and depth of field. The reason it makes these images look like minatures is that our brains aren't used to seing such shallow depth of field in wide sweeping landscapes. Depth of field shrinks the closer you are to a subject, and it increases the farther away you are from the subject. Also, telephoto lenses compress depth, while wide angles exaggerage depth. So, for that reason it doesn't work as well with relatively close-up images. We're not used to seeing so much depth and such shallow depth of field at the same time.

To use a couple of the image that have been posted thus far as examples of where it doesn't work as well:

In the image if the tiger, we've all seen images from this distance with this frame of view with shallow depth of field. Since it's not uncommon to see this type of image, we don't perceive this image as a dramatic "miniaturization" as we do the others. But what DOES stand out about this image is that the effect doesn't make sense. Take a look at the area below the ledge the tiger is laying on. That area is at about the same focal plane as the tiger, so it should be equaly sharp, but it's not. Also, look at the broken pillar at the left edge of the frame. The entire pillar is at the same focal plane, so it should all be in sharp focus, but it's not. The top is blurry, and it should only be blurry like this if the pillar were laying down, so the blurry part was pointing either away or towards the camera.

Here's another example of where the effect is off:

See the tree in the lower left hand corner of the image? Why is the top of the tree sharp, but the rest blurry? Also, look at Expedition Everest in the background. Why is the top of the mountain blurry, but the rest, which should be at about the same focal plane, sharp?

So, this isn't an effect that can be applied to just any image.

Tilt shift works best when you are looking down at the subject. . . .

I think you would also get a better result if there are no vertical objects/lines that would pass through the area you want in focus. Diagonal lines work best because they natually pass through the area of focus when looking down from above. Vertical lines will be sharp and then out of focus which can detract from the overall effect.

Has anyone else played with this effect? Wow these images gave me a case of the giggles. Some are just amazing!

This is SO MUCH FUN!! Thanks for all the Tilt shift posts!!
