Til' Debt do us part - TV show

I just saw this one. Those people learned NOTHING. The worst was the end of the show: Gail asked them if they'd called their parents to come clean about their debt (because they were borrowing from their parents and keeping secrets), and they swore that they'd done it . . . but then she explained that SHE had talked to their parents only the night before, and she knew it was a lie. The woman kept trying to lie, and Gail said, "I have it on tape." It ended with the woman saying, "Everybody out!", which I took to mean that the cameras were to get out.

I don't see those two getting any better.
Yes, I saw that one last night too. The woman's attitude seemed poor from the start, so I wasn't too surprised when she didn't follow through on much of what Gail gave her to do. She came across as pretty lazy about working and trying to bring in more income. I'm trying to remember what her husband's excuse was for not picking up his half of the household chores (something like "I was tired"??) and Gail wasn't too impressed with that excuse.

Things weren't looking any better for that couple at the end. Such a shame.

I saw that couple last night too. The gal made it clear she had no interest from the start - she had a brother who makes millions so if she wanted help she'd call HIS advisors! (I'm sure they'd be thrilled to work with HER investments.:rotfl:) Apparently if she leaves her husband and has no one to support her, her brother will buy her a house? Did I hear that right?

I wonder if her brother watched the show?

Dh always says first we watch Susie and feel bad, she would never say we can afford vacation, then we watch "Til Debt Do Us Part", and feel like we are doing wonderful, no debt but the house, and that is being prepaid.

HA!! This is exactly what my sister and I say.

I watch Suze every Saturday (DH always says "hey, isn't your girlfriend on tonight?" :laughing:) and then I watch Gail on 'Til Debt. Sometimes my sister comes over and we watch together or if she's at home we'll text each other during the shows.

I liked Gail's idea of an "Office in a Box" so I created one a few months ago. Now I just need to go over what's in it with DH since I handle all our finances and he really needs to know what's going on with them too!

Oh yeah, I forgot about that part! That was a jaw dropper. I suspect we may see her in the future on a Dr. Phil "Moochers" episode. :lmao:

I love Gail, too - we've been watching the show for years! I bought her book and it's been a huge help to me. As a freelance writer, my income is very erratic so I always had a hard time planning and budgeting, but her book gave me some helpful strategies and I feel like I am much more on top of my finances now.

One of the scariest episodes (and I don't know if it's been shown in the US yet) is the one with the husband who totally resists the whole thing and every time Gail points out his financial wrongdoings he says "well, that's just how I am." He is really quite verbally abusive to his wife, and Gail calls him on that, too. At the end (they don't get the money, of course), he says "I said no good would come of this, and I am never wrong." (Can you say "self-fulfilling prophesy?") I hope his wife gets out of there as soon as she can, because he was scary.

Gail also has a show called "Princess" about young women who are spending way above their means. My daughter says a lot of her friends are in this situation.

My MIL loves this show and I watch it at her house occasionally, but overall, I find it depressing how clueless some people are.

Yeah, at the end when they got their $1000 check, the man said, "It's so small." I think they did the show banking on a $5000 check towards their debt . . . but they weren't really interested in doing better. The lying about it was the worst.

i watch the show all the time and love it. She is great and right to the point. I also watch the princess it is good.
So this office in a box do you know if this is something you buy and get everything or do you have to put it together yourself( buy seperatly)

How long has this show aired in the US? I only just heard of it this past week.

What do you mean by the house being prepaid? I have never heard that term for a house before.

I put my "office in a box" together myself in a way that made sense to me. I bought a storage box with a lid & handle that fits 8"x11" hanging file folders. I bought a pack of colored hanging folders and each color is a category and then there are subfolders for each item in the category:

Blue=House
(folders for: mortgage/escrow, utilities, insurance, maintenance)

Purple=Vehicles
(folders for: loans, registration, insurance, maintenance)

Green=Finances
(folders for bank accounts, retirement accounts, pension, social security statements)

Yellow=Estate Planning
(folders for: life insurance, trust, wills)
Red=Debt
(folders for: credit cards)

Olive Green=Miscellaneous

I also have a separate box that I use to collect tax-related documents throughout the year so when it comes time to prepare our tax return I have everything in one place.

I like this system! My office in a box is not as organized as I would like it to be, and I think it's going to be a summer project. This gives me a starting place to re-work categories and the order they are in.

I love Gail. I use her worksheets for my budget. I have watched her shows for years. I like 'til debt... much better than Princess.

Thanks that is a very good idea with colors

The mortgage is being paid at an accelerated schedule. Started with a 30 year, paid extra for 5 years, refinanced to a 15 year, and pay extra on that, if all goes well should have it paid off next fall, about 15 1/2 years total. All said it's about 14 months later then I should have planned. Those 14 months would have paid it off before my oldest goes to college. But I can't complain.
