Tiki room back !!! Yea!

Cant wait to see it in Sept! My teens have never seen the original..

It was funny because last year I was sent on a conference to anaheim.
While there I took a day to go to Disneyland that still had the old attraction. Brought hubby along too...and we were able to compare and contrast. He way preferred the 1971 version as well....(PRIOR to that trip, he had no point of reference because his first experience was in 2005 at WDW - walked out and told me it was horrible. I was so bummed that i couldnt share that experience with him. Who? decided to put gilbert gottfried's voice behind IAGO? )

Another THREAD on this topic HERE :)

While I have avoided the new version because everyone I had talked to that had seen it said it was horrible, I am very excited to have it back to "almost" original!!! I guess it is one of the little rides that I remember from when I started going to WDW. It isn't a flashy ride, but it is one from my childhood that I always try to go on when I am there.

I love :lovestruc the orginal tiki room. The new show was terrible, thank goodness it's coming back.

I'm glad it'll be open when we are over there.

I didn't mind 'Under new management' but then I never saw the old one.

Iago annoys me but I love Zazu :lovestruc

Having never seen either one, is it a show or a ride ? I'm totally confused....what is it ?? :confused3

It is a show.
It's stars are dozens of singing birds (and a few other inhabitants of the room.)

It is the first AudioAnimatronics presentation ever fully realized by Disney.
(The mechanical actions of the robotic characters are disguised by the fact that most real birds exhibit "mechanical actions"
in their normal motions.)

You sit and listen to audio-animatronic exotic birds sing.

The new version added Zazu and Iago because the old version was so reviled and suffered from so many people walking out in the middle of the show that something had to be done.

The new version had become equally reviled, if not more so.

So now they are going back to the old version.

Hmm....not sure thats a completely accurate assessment...very cute tho

To be completely fair, I don't really think one might consider a show that started in 1971 and continued for 30 years to be a failure? Not sure how you can make the statement it was 'reviled' purely subjective comment. However I respect your opinion..you have a right to it...
Not every attraction appeals to every single guest....That's why we all have differing opinions....and respect them.

I wonder many things have been created that persisted that successfully for 30 +years? Given how changing people's attitudes are over time, I find it quite impressive how loved it still is.. I do wonder, what would you do to make it better? Thoughts?

Regardless I do agree with some comments that rides should not be closed and re-purposed...but it was Walt's vision that the parks would be constantly growing and changing. I have to say I see a lot of growth overseas, but given the amount of land Walt purchased...I think if he came back he *would be* disappointed at the amount of NEW attractions that have been built in his abscense...

We went to Disneyland last year where the Tiki Room is the old version. I was really looking forward to it, because I had remembered it was one of my favorites as a child when I visited in 1971. I have to say however that it nearly put me to sleep. It was somewhat disappointing and thought that the WDW show with Iago was much better.

It's a "closed system."

It runs at the whim and pleasure of the Disney company.
If they want to run it to empty houses (and they DID run it to empty houses at WDW for years) they can.

At Disneyland, the (shortened) original version runs to busy houses of fans.
But, that park's guests are overwhelmingly local, repeat-customers.
They grew up with that show.
It has a history that fits their own lives.
Likewise, many on these boards have close connection to classic Disney attractions.

But at WDW itself, the guest population is overwhelmingly first-timers.
They have no "connection" with a room full of wiggling birds singing songs from the 1960's and earlier.

The original Tiki show at MK played to near-empty theaters and,
sadly, many of those guests who
DID unknowingly stumble into a show,
got bored waiting for something (anything) to actually HAPPEN,
and simply stood up and noisily stumbled over others to get
out of the exit doors, mid-show.
It was a very sad situation for those of us who DID like watching the show
(for the umpteenth time, very likely.)

Now that the (nearly) original show is said to be returning,
(although, I have not heard info of the CM's actually WORKING on the theater yet, myself)
I hope that the two-three dozen of us who post here about liking this little show will be enough to keep it open for the next several years.

I'll go to see it, but I can't go every day.
(Who want's the first shift?)

Hmm ...respectfully disagree. ;)

I LOVE the tiki birds both old and new. We make it a point to go every trip. ANyone know if they'll have any soft openings within the next 2 weeks. The thought of not seeing them at all makes me super sad!

I was just reading on wikipedia...link here...

"On January 12, 2011, a small fire broke out in the attic of the attraction. The Iago audio-animatronic figure was severely damaged in the blaze. The original attraction is currently scheduled to re-open on August 15th, 2011. [3] "

Iago caused the fire...thats my theory
.:upsidedow .

well I liked it fine enough...both versions, so i wouldn't change much. I was just relaying the info....I was in the minority....the old one was reviled...generally speaking.

I like/love almost everything at WDW...all the things many hate...like Stitch, Tiki Room, The Big Hat, the Backlot Tour, The GMR, and so on and on and on... :)

I agree with Robos opinions although I noticed that even at DL back in May there were not full houses and even their people were walking out in the middle. The original show is a little sleep enhancing but I always liked the music of the Luau/Hawaiian War Chant. It makes it worth waiting through the rest.

I will take the late Oct. shift.

I love the original. The new one had a twist, but I love the original because it reeked of Walt. The song is an original from the 1940s, and was inspired Im sure from the Hawaiian love affair of the time. When I go on the Jungle Cruise, and to the Tiki Room it makes me really think of Walt. In fact almost all of Adventureland does.
