Tiger Woods's father, Earl Woods, died at his Southern California home early Wednesday morning after a lengthy battle with cancer, the world's top golfer stated in a message on his Web site, saying he was "saddened to share the news." Earl Woods was 74.

"My dad was my best friend and greatest role model, and I will miss him deeply. I'm overwhelmed when I think of all of the great things he accomplished in his life," his son, 30, says in his posting. "He was an amazing dad, coach, mentor, soldier, husband and friend."

First diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1998, Earl Woods was said to have been in frail health in recent months as the cancer spread. He was too weak to attend the grand opening of the Tiger Woods Learning Center in Anaheim, Calif., on Feb. 10.

Woods said he spoke to his father the night before the opening, and "he kept telling me how proud he was of what I was able to do, and proud of me for thinking of this. It's hard on all of us," ESPN reported.

Just last month, Woods took a self-imposed break from the PGA tour to be with his dad, saying: "It's kind of up in the air with the situation back home, so I don't know what's going to happen."

Earl, a former Green Beret, and his son had always been close, with Tiger first learning to swing from his dad when the toddler was only 9 months old. When Tiger was 2, Earl had the youngster on TV putting with Bob Hope on The Michael Douglas Show, where Tiger scored a hole in one.

"I wouldn't be where I am today without him, and I'm honored to continue his legacy of sharing and caring," Tiger says on his Web site.

Besides his son Tiger, Earl is survived by his wife, Kutilda, whom he married in 1969.

very sad.

Prayers said for the Woods family.

So sad. Prayers for friends & family. What a great dad, friend & mentor.

Very sad. I've seen the clip of the 2-year old Tiger, putting for Bob Hope; he's so cute! And Earl was beaming in the background.

I'm glad Tiger was able to spend time with his dad this last month.

Very sad. I just drove by the Tiger Woods Center in Anaheim last night and thought what a really great facility that is. His dad certainly raised Tiger to be a good person. There's no finer or more lasting legacy.

I'm so sorry to hear this though I knew it was coming...

Earl Woods was by far one of the kindest men I've ever met.

He was set to be interviewed at our AM station not long after Tiger won the masters. I kept a picture of Tiger on my desk and I wanted him to sign it. I ran into the barrage of PR people who accompany him and they formed a human fence around me, insisting Mr. Woods could NOT be seen.

At that point he came out of the booth and the look on his face astounded me. He nicely said to them, "Excuse us", put his arm around me and led me away to a corner.
"Now what can I do for you, young lady?" he said in a warm, fatherly tone.

It was at that point I realized WHY Tiger was so blessed. :teeth:

He LOVED the picture I had of his son and gladly signed it. He gave me the warmest hug and went back to his people after speaking to me in a way I will never forget.

Tiger had a good DADDY, a sweet attentive man who for just a few minutes, showed me his character.

God bless you, Earl Woods....say hello to my Daddy, he's just like you.

My DS11 did a project on Tiger and I believe that Earl had 2 or 3 other children by his first marriage. It's sad that they get overlooked. :sad2:

I don't care about Golf, but really like Tiger Woods. Sorry to hear about his father.

If someone had posted that Bob Woods father died, would anyone know who in the heck it was? :confused3

My thoughts to the ENTIRE Woods family.
