I know you guys are so creative, and I am....well..... NOT.

For my daughters birthday we are planning on having the kids make tie dye t-shirts, and as dumb as this sounds, I haven't got a clue how to do it.

I went to Michael's (Craft Store), and they sell kits, as well as just packet's of dye.

How should I do this?
There will be about 15 kids ages 7 and 8.

I should note, the kits had spray bottles, but the bye packets said to dissolve in a bucket of water. Is there a preference?

How long will it take to make a shirt?
Can 15 kids do it at once without getting bored?
How much time should this activity be?

Any other suggestions of supplemental activities?

How would I make a hidden mickey...? :)

Sorry for the barrage of questions, but any input and advice helps.

I am very confident I came to the right place to ask this.

Thanks in advance.

15 kids and dye

When I did our tie dye mickey head shirts, I needed to presoak the shirts, and then after applying the dye the shirts needed to sit 24 hours before I started the unbanding and rinsing.

Good luck.

I haven't tie dyed yet, though I have the kit upstairs. I would really hesitate to do this unless you have each child highly supervised or you are doing this in a garage or outside. I would worry about the dye getting all over the kids, their clothes and the house. If the dye got on the kids clothes, they would be ruined. I'm worried that I'm going to get it all over everything.

It's also definitely not an instant craft as you have to pre soak the shirts and let them sit wet with the dye for 24 hours before rinsing. You'd be sending them home with something their parents may or may not want to deal with or you'd have to finish them up and dry them. That would take a few days more.

IMHO, I would do some other type of craft, perhaps decorate a sun visor, make a birthday shirt they can color with fabric paint/markers or have them decorate their own cupcakes in addition to the cake. Good luck!

My wife did this with her girl scout troop last week. She has about 7-8 girls. Although not the Mickey designs, they turned out pretty well. How do I know this.... I had to rinse them. The one that turned out the best was literally dripping with dye and it took 3 times as long to rinse it out.

Just remember to wear gloves or something so your hands don't turn color. ;)

I did mine on my kitchen counter. I took a big black garbage bag and cut it down both sides and then laid it the length of my counter. I started the process at one end and finished it at the other. As I finished dying the shirts I put them each into their own plastic walmart bag and tied the top shut. I then picked up the bags and carried them to the laundry room and plopped them down onto another garbage bag (in case the walmart one leaked) to sit until the next day.
