Arts and Crafts **Tie Dye Mickey ears shirts directions**NEW NEW PICS LAST PAGE**

I just finished the dye part. Cut the soak short.
We shall see how this turns out. my guess is that the shirts are to wet, but I could be wrong.

Definitely have one boo boo, DH left the kids know I was doing it and in they ran, he walks away, I am yelling to don't touch, yelling for him to get them out and I grabbed the wrong bottle to do the red on the back of I think my shirt and started squirting away before I noticed it was the black one  (should have realized when I had to remove the top :headache:) hopefully it is just on the area that the red and blue mixed together. If it doesn't turn out DH will be redoing my shirt

Oh poor you. I know what you mean, if you get distracted its easy to have bo bo 's don't feel bad.

Did you wring the shirts? You should wring them really good, as much as you can with your hands, however you will see some water running anyway, but you don't want too much water running because there goes your dye too.

Yes I wrung the shirts out when I took them out of the soda ash water.

When applying the dye from the bottles, do you squeeze the bottle or kinda shake it on?
I guess my question is how saturated do you actually want the material?
How can you tell that it is actually going through the material into the folds?

OK, you sound like you did the right step.
You shake the bottle just to mix the dye. You can open the folds carefully and look into them, you would see the dye on the white cloth.

thanks for all your help.

Now tomorrow when I take the shirts out of their bags should I rinse them
1. before I take the rubberbands off
2. as I am taking the rubberbands off
3. take the rubberbands off then rinse the shirt

Also once they are rinsed should I let them dry then wash, or throw them in the washer immediately?
I saw in a post something about salt, do I need to add salt to the washer?
use just detergent or detergent and fabric softner?

You can have squeeze the excess dye under the facet as you remove the rubber bands, then put them all in the washing machine with mild detergent, sprinkle some salt, I don't add downy or anything in the rinse cycle. Then put them in the dryer (I use a sheet of bounce or downy here) and set the dyer on low heat, or less dry. Then you can iron them and you're done.

So I am getting close to making the "master batch" of shirts for our families. Everyone liked the look of the prototyp that I had made, which I guess is good. So I think I am going to get a "bulk" box of the red\yellow\blue Jacquard dyes. Then i will buy a separate black dye for Mickey.

So here are my questions:
1. Are any specific brand shirts head and shoulders above the others? I am close to many chain stores like Wal Mart, Target, Kohl's, etc. So I have easy access to most brands.
2. If I do a long sleeve shirt, do I need to do anything different for the sleeves?
3. Any suggestions for a different color Mickey head than the black i was planning on doing? (again, planning on using a red\blue\yellow kit for the other colors.)
4. When making the shirts, what ways do you keep the dye from getting onto the shirt while you are coloring in the Mickey head?

Thanks for the suggestions and special thanks to pixiedust32 for all of the knowledge she has volunteered here!

A #1 - You can use any 100% cotton brand, I like Hanes, fruit of the loom, another brand that starts with a G, but Hanes and Fruit are great, heavy cotton, great for tie dye.
Wal mart has the faded glory brand, those are great for tie dye, I use them a lot, the have kid and adult sizes, also organic cotton a little bit more expensive but great.
Target has the Merona brand, (women) love it. There is a place on line where you can order the shirts.

A#2- The process is the same with the long sleeve, you twist the shirt the same way and the sleeves just fold as you go. They take more dye, that's the only difference.

A#3- You can do, navy blue, purple, red I had done hot pink and it looks good, anything brighter or darker color than the other colors, otherwise the color won't stand out.

A#4- I use plastic and scotch tape, put some plastic, from a plastic bag or saran wrap and some tape, you can do the ears last if you want. You going to have some dye leaking sometimes, don't feel bad, if you see some dye running have a rag handy and gently tap on the area.

How many shirts are you making?

pirate: pirate: pirate:

My mom and I are taking my girls and my nephew to WDW. We are going to do the Pirates League and Pirates & Pals cruise. I am getting the kids pirates costumes for the day and my mom was worried that us grown up wouldn't match them.

Then I got this white 100% cotton pheasant's tops at Walmart yesterday and when I tried it on I had a vision~~~~

I am envisioning tye-dying the pheasants tops black, white and red striped to match our 3 pirates!!!

10 Shirts!
wifey, my 2 kiddos(5,2), my MIL, SIL, BIL, 3 nieces(17,9,6) and of course me!
And thank you for the answers. I just noticed that some of the shirts feel more comfy than others. One of those shorts was the Wal Mart Faded Glory shirts. although I couldn't find them for men w\o the pocket (which I don't want).

OK! Maybe you need 2 kits for all the shirts or the individual dye, you would get more. Go to www.jiffyshirts.com you can find all kinds of shirts here.
I know wal mart only has a bunch of the pocket ones. :guilty:

Im getting ready to make shirts for our surprise trip! We have been doing these since 2005, and they are still so fun to make! This time I have taken the advice here and bought the Dharma dyes and supplies. We are using the shirts to tell the kids where they are going on their surprise spring break trip!
