Tie Dye Instructions for Spiral Mickey Shirt

Hi PixieDust32, We leave for WDW/Disney Cruise in 12 days and I'm trying to decide if I have time to tie dye new shirts before we go! It's so addicting.

BTW, I also volunteered to tie-dye shirts for my son's school trip to WDW in June. 20 shirts. Am I crazy? (I'm thinking regular tie dye pattern--not Mickey ears. We'll see if I can resist trying the Mickey!) You are still the master!!!

After much planning, I'm getting ready to start my shirts, but I just came up with a question. When you start to twist your shirt do you grab throught the shirt to snag the back of the shirt and twist it at the same time, or do you twist it by holding only the Mickey head and the front of the shirt?

Yes! You grab both, the back and the front of the shirt.

Go for it! Without the Mickey would be much easier and faster! I know its addicting but fun!

OK, quick question. I've washed my shirts after they sat for 24 hours and now I have put a little bleach pen to help define the mickey heads. How long do I let them sit before washing them again? Also, will the bleach not mess up the other parts of the shirts when I wash them all together??? Thank you!!! I will post pics when they dry!

Just a few minutes, you should see the change in a few minutes, then you can wash them, it shouldn't mess them up, if its only the line it should be ok.

Super! Just remove them right away from the washer and put them in the dryer, low heat seat.

So, you have your mickey head rubber banded and then you swirl the shirt and then how many rubber bands do you put on to make the swirls? I just love how your shirts look!

It depends on how you feel your shirt, you kind of tuck it in as you go, the rubber bands will "crunch" your shirt as you go, I don't count them, like the bigger shirts might take more rubber bands, the bigger the shirt, the bigger the area where the colors go, I probably not making any sense I'll take a pic next time I tie one to give you an idea!

I did 10 shirts tonight and they'll be done around 11PM tomorrow night (going to make it 2 late nights in a row!)

I'm pretty sure I'm going to need some touching up with the bleach pen on a few of them. So when I unwrap them and rinse in the sink, that's the time to hit them with the bleach pen?

And then after I outline them with the bleach pen, throw them right into the washer?

You do the re touch if need it after you wash them and dry them, let it dry for a couple of hours then if you want you can wash them again. Remember to practice first and it would be a very thin line, you might don't see the color change right away, don't keep putting more, wait a couple of minutes, sometimes it takes a while to show, otherwise you can ruin your shirt. Practice on a cloth, rag etc.

So let me see if I have the bleach pen process correct.
1. Wash and let the shirts dry after dyeing them.
2. Us the pen to draw around the Mickey ears making a THIN line (and making sure to have something in between the shirt's front and back like cardboard to prevent the bleach from bledding through the sirt.)
3. Let the bleach sit for a few hours.
4. Wash the shirts agin.

And lastly, is there one bleah pen that is better than another?
