Tie Dye Instructions for Spiral Mickey Shirt

How cool! I always wanted to learn to knit, but just never got around to it! I can sew (also learned from my grandma!), but I dont think I could find a dog pattern anywhere in Arkansas! haha! Your kiddos are lucky to have such a crafty mamma!

Posting so I can find this easily. I'm not very crafty, but my mom is. I'm hoping to make tie dye Mickey shirts for our September trip. My experience with tie-dye is making it with Rit dye in the boiling water tubs at the Unitarian Church where I grew up. I guess it's changed a bit, hasn't it? :)

I think the thing that has made tie dying soo much better- is the availablity of high quality supplies! Thanks to the internet! Good luck tarak- we are all here to help you along the way!

I love knitting, and the harder they look the more I like them. My girls love it because I make them hats, scarfs, coats, pretty much anything, when they were little we used to make doll clothes, barbie clothes, it was fun, too bad they grew so fast :( oh well.

I wish I would have realized that! I just got done ordering some Mickey Mouse knit hats for us to wear this winter on Etsy! I will know who to look up next time!

Oh well, next time. I'll get into the knitting here pretty soon, the cold days of winter are perfect for knitting, I was thinking about making some Disney hats this year. Let me see if I can find some pictures of some, not disney related, but cute ones.

Good Luck! I used that rit dye years ago and oh boy it was a mess. The dye on ME was hard to get off, I had black and blue spots on my legs and arms, :rotfl: it was crazy!
haha! I made that mistake once with Rit black, before I found Dharma- it bleeds like crazy!

Yes please do! I would love to see them!

Ahh! They are adorable! You should def do some Disney ones and get them up on Etsy! That kind of stuff sells sooo well over there! I saw a really cute one over there that was lime green with a big eyeball in the middle like Mike Wazowski! ha! It was darling! I can't wait to see with the creative stuff you come up with!

Beautiful hats...love the socks, too! My DS11 likes to knit (he learned at school), but I've been to intimidated to try. :sad2:

It's fun seeing all of the cool projects...very inspiring. :thumbsup2

AHH! I didn't catch that you made the shirt for her to! Awesome! You are multi craftual!

You know, the dharma dyes really go a long way. I think if you ordered your primarys in the small containers you would be ok (what does everyone else think?) MAybe throw an extra color in there just to be safe- like red, since technically fushia is your primary not red. But that is my tip for better results! High quality dyes really do pay off.

Thank you Tinker! I was looking at the Group Kit then adding a few extra colors since we each have different favorites.

PixieDust32, what colors did you use for the blue and green in your siggy?

I just wanted to post a thank you to you all! I was directed to this thread by doing a search for disney tie-dyes when we decided to try and make matching shirts for our group of 19 people going to WDW in September. I had never known about DIS until this point. Over the last week, I have read every post in this thread, all 102 pages!! All your instructions, advice, tips and photos made me feel like we could do this!

So last night, we had a big ol' tie-dye party and dyed all the shirts, using the mickey head spiral from here and a few other patterns my SIL had found. Right now they are all setting in their plastic and I am eagerly awaiting tonight to open them up! Without this thread and all you guys I would have felt so uncomfortable trying to do this, I can't thank you enough. Even if they don't turn out great, I will be prepared for a second round. I have bleach pen at the ready for any I can "save" in case they are horrible. LOL

I plan to check out the rest of the DIS now that I've finished reading this one to see what other treasures you folks have posted.

I LOVE WDW and wish I had known how much I would love it years and years ago. We always put off going because of the expense. We went 2 years ago and loved every minute of it. Now the expense seems totally do-able (especially with the deals they have offered lately) and we hope to go every 2 years for the foreseeable future.

26 days until we visit "Uncle Walt" again!

:cheer2: Yay for you tie-dye queens!

oh gosh this thread is so fun to read!

I have a couple quick questions that I'm sure are somewhere in this giant thread, but I can't find the answer.

And please don't laugh because I don't have 1 crafty bone in my body!!

When I stitch the mickey head onto the shirt, using floss, do I leave the floss in as I gather the head up? Then I squirt some dye on whatever color I want the Mickey head to be, and cover it up w/saran wrap/a baggie so other colors don't mix w/it.......right??

The ash everyone talks about.......if I soak the shirts in ash and water before dying them, do I dry them before squirting the color on them? If not, do I go ahead and stitch the outline on the shirt before soaking?

I'll be making the shirts for 2 DS's, DH, and myself....so I really don't want the pastel colors. The longer I leave the dye on, the bolder the color is, right?

thanks for your help!
