Tie Dye Instructions for Spiral Mickey Shirt

LISA! Did you use a sewing machine to do your shirts? How on earth did you get it to cinch??? I am dying to hear alllll about it! I have a machine, but just figured it was impossible! lol- man would that save me a ton of time! And where did you get your halter? It is super cute (actually- you are super cute!) Thanks so much for posting the pic!

And hey- that was my first try, so you can totally do it! Look how awesome your cakes are- you are crafty! Maybe you should try it on a cotton tote bag or something and see how you do- I bet you will be great at it!

Thank You, i actually didn't use my sewing machine for the mickey heads but to make my halter top. It started out as an XL shirt from Joann's and i cut it up and made it in to a halter. I didn't even think about using my machine for the mickey head:rolleyes:, I'll have try it out with my nephews shirt. Maybe if you put the stitch length on the longest setting and lessened the tension a little and sewed kinda slow it would work, Idk I'll try it out this weekend and let you know how it works out.

I'll be going to joann's tomorrow so I'll see what they have there for me to practice that Tinkerbell on... Did you use a stencil or trace it in pencil then just fill it in, or did you do it free hand to get the Tinkerbell in the front?

Maybe this tip will help with the removing floss problem.

The last time I made these shirts I used Glide floss for stitching/gathering the mickey head. And I just wrapped the extra length after pulling it tight around the gathering before I rubber banded it.

That way I didn't have to cut anything out - I just unwrapped the length of floss from the gather, then simply pulled the one knot on the end to remove it. The floss literally glided out! I hardly had to tug on it at all.

I used Resist- it is made by tulip- I put the resist on, let it dry, and the dyed the shirt laying flat on the ground.. you can sort of see my lines, lol- just be sure you put something between the shirt layers so it doesnt bleed over.

You had me up to the bolded part. Did you dye one side and then flip it over to dye the other side? I was thinking the dye would go through both layers at once? Today is :laundy: day for my latest spiral spray paint Mickeys so I will definitely be doing some sort of dye project this weekend.

Thanks -- I did the same thing, but I had the darndest time getting it out. I did use cheap floss, though and not Glide.

I think my problem was that I used those really cheap Hanes kids shirts that come in a 5 pack. I bought them so I could experiment with the floss, but I think it bit me in the butt in the end because the shirts are so flimsy.

I just tie dyed the rest of them without Mickeys. I'll try again post-vacation with better quality shirts and see if I get better results.

Thanks for the advice!

I'm sorry! The reason I had to have something between layers is bc my wings on the tink shirt were white, and I did not want any bleed through. So yes, I flipped it over- BUT if you are doing the swirl design, then I would say just leave it flat and let the dye seep through!

Oh my goodness! Well you did a great job on the tank, it fits you perfectly!!

I free handed the Tink with a washable marker, and then filled it in :)

Thanks for the fast reply. I am actually going to try to do a gradation technique with something in the darkest part (I guess I need to decide what soon). I pretty much have lime green and yellow to work with at this point, so lime green it is :woohoo:.

OK, here's my first attempt...

I did one for DS4. I sewed one for DNiece7, but I wanted to try one first, especially since I was helping nine little girls, too.

I think the head turned out pretty nice, I just wish the colors had stayed as bright as some of the others on the thread. The back looks like an upside down rabbit. Instead of pulling out the center and banding from the back, I just continued banding from the front, and that's what happened. I'm going to band DNiece's from the front and back.

Here it is:

I love it!! What a great first attempt! See I told you that you didnt need much practice!! Awesome job!

PS- we are still having a tie dye party when I come to Nompton! haha!

Thanks! I had a little bleeding on one side, but it turned out pretty nice, I thought.

Heck, yes!! I have at least three more to make, and you gotta show me how to do all your super cute variations!!

That looks a lot better than my first attempts. Great job.

Hi everyone, wanted to post my first try at this. I had read the directions months ago and just got around to doing it. I did ones for DH and DS, now that I know I can do it I will make them for myslef and DD. These were so much fun, I might have a new obsession!

Isn't it a blast?? Your shirts look great! It is very addictive- I am sure one of these days I will be so tired of sewing MM heads, but as of right now- I cant get enough!! :goodvibes

Hey Tinker, how much color resist did take to do the front and back of the Tink shirt? How thick did you make it?

I think it took about half of the bottle- and I just kind of squeezed it on, and let the resist sit at that thickness. I did do a little brushing with the Tink to make sure it was fully covered.

Tinker, your last set is fantastic! And the minnie tutu is just adorable. I wish that my DD would still wear stuff like that.

I've a question for you - just how hard is it working with the black dye? I saw a wonderful dark blue/black tee when I was on vacation, but I'm a bit leery about what would happen with it. Any comments? Thanks!

Thanks! I have to be honest- black is not the easiest color to work with. I had sworn it off completely until I started using Dharmas "New Black" which does not run nearly as bad as the dyes I was buying at Michaels or Walmart. I think the most important thing to remember about black, is you should put it on last (at least in my opinion) to minimize bleeding.

This was a fun project! My only problem is my Mickey Heads are also a blob. So I tried doing the "dashing around the templet" with the Clorox bleach pen thing I saw in an earlier thread to define it. I don't see it bleaching out. Do I need to let it sit overnight or should it be happening right away? If it does bleach out can I just throw the shirts into the washer or will all this bleach pen stuff lighten all of the tye dye.
HELP!!!

Did you shake your pen really well before you used it? I have had that problem a few times, I think the bleach seperates out in there. I would wash your shirts that have bleach on them (just rinse under faucet first to get the bleach out) and then try it again. You can also do it when the shirts are wet if you are in a rush!
