Tie Dye Instructions for Spiral Mickey Shirt

Argh! Mental note to self, bleach is not your best artistic medium. I totally messed up at least one of the boys' shirts (one of Mickey's ears is way off shape), and didn't even try DH's. I liked how his turned out too much to be the one the messed it up on the front. I might have to try t-shirt paint for his outline. They are washing right now, so I guess I will re evalutate when they are dry.

Hi,

Just wanted to let everyone know that my Michaels has started to carry 100% cotton t-shirts for tie dyeing.

Unfortunately, they only come in a 3-pack. But for those with only a Michaels close by, or those wanting to do some last minute tie dyeing, at least there is now an easy option available. I think the regular price is a pack of 3 for $9.99. There is both a crew-neck and a v-neck style (yeah!)

Hmm, didn't even check out the sizes, just saw the 3 packs. Sorry:confused3 It was a rather small section right under all the tie dye kits, so I'm betting they don't have a huge range of sizes.

Loving this last batch of shirts!!! Of course, the blue/green are my fav's. But the black one is really striking. The free form splash pattern on the bottom is great!

And the orange and black, remind me again please which colors you are using for when I do my Halloween versions. How many tsp of powder are you using per cup to get such a great dark black?? I am going back and forth on which black to order from Dharma, Black or Better Black. Will probably end up ordering both!!!

No biggie- I need to go there today or tomorrow anyway!

Thank you! Everyone really likes the splashes on the tanks like that!

OK, with the black I use 2 tsps of NEW BLACK per 1/2 cup (bc that is how big my bottles are to squirt the dye) from Dharma- which has a slightly purple cast to it, but as you can tell, it is very minimal. With the orange, I mixed Lemon Yellow, with Fire Red- 1 tsp of each per 1/2 cup. The orange is a nice darker orange, I would say if you want a brighter one, just use more yellow :)

Tinker--wow you've got that Mickey head down to a "t"! (No pun intended!) :thumbsup2 They look fantastic. If I wasn't leaving for WDW in about 24 hours, I'd be inspired to try mine again!

Is the trick to not use too much dye on the flossed/basted in Mickey outline area? Need some of your magic! :wizard:

I always mae sure my Mickeys are pointed down while I am dying, and I also put the second color on before the Mickey color- I think that might be part of the reason they dont bleed as much :) I still do have some that bleed occasionally, and I just use bleach :) I will post some here in a bit that I have used bleach on!

Does anyone know if it is possible to use Tulip's Color Block with tie dye? I was thinking of trying a combination of the swirly head Mickey and tie dying, but I didn't know if the color block worked that way or if it would only block color from the spray on style of coloring. Any advice or experience?

Yup it works..... I made this tank for my May trip/. Just do not skimp on the resist.:goodvibes

Kat this is probably my fave shirt on this thread, I love it! I copied your image you used to do it awhile back, I just cant find resist anywhere! Too cute! Here are a few more of my designs that I finished today...

Ok, I finally broke down and signed up for a login. I've been lurking for a couple of weeks getting ideas for our upcoming trip.

I wanted to share the way I've been practicing on my tie dye....

I went to JoAnn's and bought some white t-shirt material (it's 60% cotton and 40% polyester I believe- plus it was on sale for $3.99 a yard). Last night I cut out 4 pieces of it about a foot square and used just some cheap dye from their summer camp projects that I got for $5- it had red, black and blue in it.

My mickey heads didn't come out as defined as I would like (I made them a little smaller than I will use on my shirts) but the color was a lot better than I expected considering I used cheap dye and only left it on for 4 hours (I did not pre wash or use ash as I am really just playing with patterns). As soon as I have enough posts I'll post pictures.

I also tried the glue head swirly mickey with spray fabric paint- my dh like this one, even though the glue ran, so I'll try again using the flour/water combo.

I have shirts to make for 4 of us, and probably will end up doing shirts for the other 5 who will be with us!

Anyhow, LOVING the designs on these- the pp with the minnie bows- way cute!

I'll defiantly bee posting a lot between now and September when we go for our 1st ever WDW resort vacation! The only other time we've been was last year to the NSSHP and I've been to downtown Disney several times.

Now that I've rambled.... :goodvibes

Welcome Mouser!! So glad you finally signed up! Thanks for the compliment- thats a great idea about the practice material! When will you be there in Sept? I will be in WDW Aug 30th- Sept 5th! If you have any questions, feel free to PM me- I am a Certified Disney Travel Agent, and can answer any questions you might have!!

We'll be there the 17th-24th.

It'll be me, dh, ods, yds driving down and my mil, sil, bil, niece and nephew flying in.

My sil and I have talked more in the last few weeks on the phone than we probably did all of last year. BIL and dh are both tired of hearing about Disney, though I'm getting DH excited with the t-shirt designs I'm doing.

I do have a question about the tie dye- and I know this has probably already been asked- for those who have bleached a dark t-shirt with designs (I'm thinking the peace, love and mickey I saw) then dyed it- how long do you leave the bleach on and do you just use the bleach pen?

My MIL loves tie dye and I'm thinking about doing large bleached mickey head on a black shirt, then tie dying just the head.

With the black shirt, I used the gel from a bleach pen, and painted the designs on, then I dipped the bottom part in a water and bleach combo (I wish I could tell you how much of each, but I just poured some in, lol!) Anyway, I left it on about 2 hours, and just kept an eye on it. I know some people have said they have had problems with bleach eating the cotton, but I did not have that problem. The main thing to keep in mind, is different black shirts turn different colors when bleached (I have no idea why!)- this particular one I had turned pink, so I just put a brighter pink dye on.. and another one I did a few weeks ago turned orange, so I did red and orange dye! I hope that makes sense!

Tinker,

The Minnie shirt is totally adorable!!!

And some good news...along with the new 3-packs of cotton t's at Michaels, I also noticed...drumroll...color block resist!! :yay: It is new packaging from the stuff I found on clearance a few weeks ago. It is right up along side the single color tulip dyes and the soda ash in the same type of box!!

Yea, can't wait to see what you come up with when you have easy access to resist!!! You are truly a tie dye queen!! :worship:

Thanks! Whoo hoo, I am heading to Michaels now! I have several custom orders to work on this weekend, so I will do the Mickey design then!

Have any of you guys bought soda ash in bulk? I was looking at a few auctions on ebay, and it is 20 (ship included) for 7 lbs- which is way better than I can get it for at Michaels- anyone have recommendations??

Don't be disappointed if they don't have it yet. The t-shirt aisle at my Michaels is still being re-done, and most of it is still empty!!!! So you may need to check back.

On the soda ash...that sounds a bit expensive to me. You can get a pound of it at AC Moore for about $3 then use a coupon (don't know if you have an AC Moore, though). I bought 5 pounds at Dick Blick for just under $10. But I live close by a retail store and don't need to pay shipping. Maybe you should try a local pool supply store first, I believe I've read you can buy sodium carbonate at those types of stores.

HTH,

GoofyWalker

I live in Arkansas- so my choices are Michaels and Hobby Lobby. I have not looked at Hobby Lobby yet though.. I will today if I have time before taking DS to his Dads (3 1/2 hours away!)- Do you think Walmart would have sodium carbonate in the pool chemical aisle? I never thought about buying the actual chemical- I usually just look for soda ash!
