Tie Dye Instructions for Spiral Mickey Shirt

Carol, thanks for the information. I dyed my tester shirts today. Although I had a few rubberbands around the Mickey head I do not think I had enough. I saw some seepage, but I could not tell if it was from dye that droped outside the of the bands when I was dying the shirt. I have them in plastic and will rinse them tomorrow evening. I will try and post pictures this weekend.

Even though I have tye dyed before I found that I did not prep my area well enough this time and that is something I will take better time in doing next time.

Let us know how your shirt turned out!! If I knew how to post a picture, I would post one of my shirt. Maybe I can get my daughter to show me how - I wouldn't now where to start, other than taking the actual picture!!

There was dye on the outside of the rubber bands that were around my mickey head too so I thought for sure the dye had gotten through them, but it didn't. I think just a teeny drip might have gotten through at the bottom because of a tiny spot that is on the shirt, but like I said, it is far enough away from the mickey head. The color of the spiral closest to my mickey head is blue and there is a tiny spot of purple by the blue so that is why I'm assuming the a drip of purple might have seeped under the rubber bands near the bottom.

I think I had about 5 rubber bands around my mickey head and I really had them tight - like I couldn't have stretched the rubber band any more.

OK here is a pic of me wearing a round 2 shirt.

I have been bitten bye the tie dye bug!!! I have an older pink t shirt that somehow got blue ink on it and I won't wear it anywhere except to bed. I checked it's tag today and it's 100% cotton. I am going to play around with dying it to see if I can hide the ink stain as this was one of my favorite t shirts.

Thanks so much for the compliments!!! I made this one to wear to MNSSHP on 9/9! DH made one with a very similar color scheme for the party. It was just so much fun to make. i am really glad I ventured to this part of the forum and found this shirt design!!!

Thanks again, everyone!

Well we decided to do the shirts!!! We died shirts (and one pair of DD's panties, she wanted them done too!) this afternoon. There will be three adult t shirts, one kids t shirt, on kids tank top, and one pair of panties. I am sooooo excited to see how they turn out!!! We are going to rinse them out in the morning. I will post pics of them when they are done!! Thank you to everyone for all the tips and instructions for these shirts!!

I am back!!!!!! I was the poster who did the pictures for the original tie dye shirts, but I have wanted to try the spiral since I saw these come out. Of course, we leave Monday night, for a Tuesday early a.m. flight, and I just stitched around the Mickey heads. We have to go work at the local sweet corn festival as a fundraiser for Boy Scouts, so I am going to set them to soak in the soda ash while we are gone, and will then dye them when we get home. Tomorrow is a STL Cardinals game, so when we get home from there, i can rinse and wash and dry to pack for Monday.

In addition to trying the spiral, I am using the Mickey silhouette I saw on another thread. I'll post pics when they are done.

This is the silhouette I am using:

Wish me luck!

WOW you sure have a busy couple of days!! Good luck with the Mickey silhouette, that looks like it will be really neat when it is done!!

Well we rinsed out shirts this morning, and they look GREAT!!! There is a couple that may need a bit of outlining but mostly they are great!! I will post some pics once they have dried!

I attempted to do 3 tie dye spiral mickey shirts and only one shirt shows the mickey. How can I save these shirts. Can I use a bleach pen to trace a mickey head out? or should I just try to cover with an iron on mickey head? The color of the shirts look great just missing the mickey! I will post as soon as they're completely done.

TIA

When you say missing the mickey head, do you mean that it just kind of blends into the other colors on the shirt? Yes, you can outline the mickey head with a bleach pen to try and define it. I have only done one of these shirts and my mickey head turned out pretty perfect so I didn't have to use the bleach pen. I did read somewhere in this thread though that the bleach pen can be tricky and people have suggested that you use a small brush to put the bleach on - you would definitely have more control using a brush. Put something thick inside the shirt so the bleach doesn't go through to the back!

Yes, the color sort of blends so mickey is not well defined. I have the bleach pen with a broad tip so I will try to use that end to trace the mickey head out. I hope it works. If not then I will just iron on a mickey head to cover it up! LOL!

You might consider doing the spiral mickey head with the bleach pen..let me find a picture....

Well, we got home from the game. Go CARDS!!!!! It was very exciting when we won with a grand slam walk off in the bottom of the ninth, but considering it was 96 degrees today and we were in the sun the entire time, I think this is a game I could have enjoyed from my air conditioned living room :happytv:

I rinsed the shirts to find that the Mickey silhouette wasn't too well defined on the kids' shirts. Mine is a little better. So, off I went to find my bleach pen, they are sitting right now and will be in the next load of the wash. If they don't work, we'll figure out some way to use the original ones I made in '05. Unfortunately my daughter's shirt that I made the first time (and my favorite) is now too small. I will have to find someone to gift it to, or maybe sell it on E-bay.

She'll have to wear her big brother's and it will have to be a little big.

I'll try to post a picture tomorrow of the finished projects.

That is cool! I was thinking of doing something like that too. But this has also given me another idea. I wonder if this will work if you used a dark shirt and bleach pen to create the spiral mickey...hmm:confused3

Well the silhouette didn't work too well because I think it was too small. The kids' shirts just had a big blue blob in the middle.

I first tried to outline it in bleach pen, but that didn't work, so I then grabbed the bottle of bleach and a paint brush, that is the first shirt with the larger white area around Mickey's head. I then changed to a wooden skewer, that is the second shirt with the narrower white line. My shirt had enough of an outline that I didn't do anything to it.

Here they are:

I really like the spiral and it's easy to do, so I will probably do more for my DH and DS before we leave in January.
