Tie Dye Instructions for Spiral Mickey Shirt

grumpy&princess - looking forward to seeing what type of answers you get. I'm having a hard time deciding what colors to use also!

That's awesome- I'm gonna have to try that. Thank you so much for the great instructions!

We did these tonight, I can't wait to see what they look like and if they came out ok!! We learned a lesson, we bought a kit and all of a sudden there was blue all over the shirts...well come to find out there was blue dye power all over the rubber bands!!!

Had a horrible time trying to decide what colors to order from Dharma - there are just too many choices!

We're making three different shirts, with two colors each. I've ordered:

Lilac and Peacock Blue
Hot Pink and Soft Orange
Bright Yellow and Chinese Red

I've read that Dharma takes a while to ship, and then once the shirts are done it will probably be closer to May-ish, lol, but I'll make sure to post photos.

Ours all came out ok, but wanted to share my favorites :)

I resized them not sure why they are so big :(

Yes, please tell us how you did the curly Mickey. That is so darn cute.

How did you do the "curly" Mickey? They are both really good!

When the shirt was almost dry I used a bleach pen. Because it was still a little wet the bleach ran a little bit so it looks like its part of the design. I saw the curly mickey idea here somewhere, I can't take credit for it ;)

Very cute! Love your color choices.

I've done something similar to the swirly Mickey - but I didn't use bleach. It was a mixture of flour and water, maybe something else? And you put it on the shirt in whatever design and then set it in the sun to harden. Then you would peel it off the shirt.

There are instructions on here somewhere, but if I remember right someone got the idea from a Family Fun magazine.

Corjack,

When I made ours last weekend, the lime green I used for the Mickey heads bled so that you couldn't really see the outline and tell that it was Mickey. I went and bought a bleach pen, and went around the outline---it worked like a charm! And it was a day later so the dye was already set pretty well. DH didn't think it would work but it did! I can try to post pics later........

I am also planning to make more shirts this weekend, and was thinking about using masking tape around the Mickey head outline instead of dental floss- I just did not have luck with the floss keeping the color from bleeding. Have fun, and I think your shirts look great!

ok I have three trial shirts doing the 24 hour sit and its so bugging me to see how they turned out. I did them at 1am so it will be another late night for me. I used a regular dye kit from micheals just to get a feel for how to do it before I get the dye from dharma

question about the swirly mickey head with the flour and water paste way. Couldnt you make a whole mickey head and totally fill in in with this mixture (and cover it with bag) and do the spiral tie dye procedure and then one you are totally dont with that part go back and redo the mixture around the mickey head that is there with the goop again and dye your mickey head? Hope I explained that right.

ok lets see if i can figure out how to post the pictures on here.
I like this one maybe because its mine. LOL

I did no touch up work to these as I thought I might have to. Cant wait to actually start making these for our trip. These three were trail runs to see if I could do it. What do you all think of them?

They look great! :thumbsup2 I like the dark pink Mickey head too. My DD's was a dark pink and and it looked so good with all the other colors.

The shirts do look good! And doing a trial run at them is a good idea, for nothing more than to calm your nerves beforehand. It's scary going into it blind and not knowing what'll happen, but the results are fun, no matter what!

Good luck on the next batch!

They all look good, but my favorite is the pink mickey. The colors are very dramatic on that one.

We wore our Mickey tie-dye shirts to Magic Kingdom yesterday and I can't believe how many people stopped us and asked where we bought our shirts! They were a HUGE hit! People couldn't believe we actually made them ourselves!!! They really were a great idea, whoever started this thread gets my pat on the back!! :)
