Tie Dye Instructions for Spiral Mickey Shirt

What did I do wrong? The kit I bought at walmart said it would do 8 shirts and it only did one adult shirt. I only used a little of the red for the mickey head but two bottles on the rest of the shirt. It was not even dripping like peopple had talk about. It was rainbow rock kit, and it said no presoaking required. Thanks for any advice!

They never do as many as they advertise. My jacquard kit said it would do 14, and I got 4, having to run out and get another small kit while in process since I ran out of yellow.

It all depends upon the amount of dye you saturate into the cloth, the size of the shirt, and whatever else may be happening at the time.

I've learned to have an extra kit standing by just in case. You can always return it if you don't use it.

Excellent instructions!!!! I think even a first time tye-dyer like me can follow these!!!

I say never, ever trust what the box says regarding how many "projects" it will make!!!

I used the Tulip kit & it said it would do "up to 8 shirts". NOT. One kit (where I used red & blue dye) made only two shirts. I ended up having to go out mid-project to get more dye.

I would say it sounds like (on average) one bottle of mixed dye for each color (for most brands it seems) will make 2 shirts. Assuming you're using two or three colors.

We are coming back to WDW in April & I'm making more tie dyes for each day...I will plan 1 dye bottle of each color to only last through 2 shirts.

If you read the box, all the ones I saw said "projects" instead of "shirts". So if they're talking "projects" that means hats, socks, shirts, etc.

Anyway--just plan for a lot more dye than the kit says it will require. Especially if you're ordering dye online. Luckily, I bought ours at the store & could run out for more when I ran out mid-project!

The best part? DH is excited to wear his shirt!

Love the shirts and your creative idea on the hatch marks to clean up Mickey!:goodvibes

I want to do only one color with a spiral design. How do I band it and such? Do I do exactly like the pictures show & just squirt one color all over? It seems like that wouldn't leave enough white. Do I just use extra rubber bands? Thanks!

I think that you would just do it the same way. I guess it may depend upon just how much dye you squirted in. I completely saturated mine using 3 colors (it was dripping like crazy!), so maybe not use as much dye?

I'm not sure. Anyone else have any suggestions?

I was at Walgreens and found a whole shelf of slightly second t-shirts for 2.29 each. They had a slight reddish streak on the back of them but since I'm going to tie dye them red and blue anyway, I figured it couldn't hurt! The only problem was the Med. size ones for the kids were not very heavy duty, but once I dye them the should be fine. The large and XL sizes were very heavy. I think I'll find a few sleeveless tees for my MIL an DD and I'm all set!

Try doing the danish with rubber bands and then putting dye on one half of it. Like a black and white cookie, if you have seen those? Don't put it all over. It will leave a lot of white, but it will be a spiral.

I'm not 100% sure about this, but I did make a shirt for DS at a campground where we dipped the shirts in vats dye. I dipped one half in blue (think like dunking an oreo in milk) and the other half in green and it made spirals. So I think covering one half (a semi circle) in dye will give a spiral with white as the other color.

Good luck!

For my DS shirt, I used the boy's Hanes undershirts which are fairly thin. It was 100% cotton & turned out great. I think the color issues come in when you've got a blend and not 100% cotton. The thickness shouldn't affect the color (in my experience)...ours all turned out essentially the same and the adult shirts were pretty thick & my DS shirt was definitely not thick!!

We're making another trip in April to DW & we'll wear our blue & red tie dye and I'm making two more designs so we'll wear our tie dye every day we're there.

Since I have some time to wait for shipping, I'm going to order the Dyson(?) dies & see how they work.

I don't think I ever posted a picture of us wearing our Mickey shirts at DW...here 'ya go!

Great t-shirts!! :goodvibes Don't forget to post your new shirts too! I already told/asked DH about doing more shirts in different colors for our May trip and he said, "yes, good idea and I want to help again!" -- Who took my DH and where can I find him???? :rotfl2:

Thanks to the OP for the wonderful, visual directions. I didn't think I'd be able to do it, but I did! Even my DH said, "I"m impressed!"

My DH thought they were hearts, but I guess he wasn't feeling the Disney magic at that moment. ;)

Nice job!

Yeah, mine were a cross between a heart and Mickey but that just separates the Disneyphiles from the rest!:lmao:

Those turned out great! What did you use around the Mickey head? Metal studs? That's a neat look, whatever you did! And at Disney, nobody will question what it is!!! :hippie:

Ok, I've been reading and re-reading this thread for months now and I finally got up the nerve (and supplies) to actually do the dying. I dyed four shirts last night and now have about 7 hours to wait to rinse them out. I really hope they turn out well, but if they don't I still have plenty of dye left.:thumbsup2 I tried two different techniques. I did the spirals on three shirts, and then still had a lot of dye left so I did another shirt for dd using 3 rubber bands for the mickey head and then did circles down the rest of the onesie. I had a lot of fun making them, but I'm such a perfectionist I'll be disappointed if they don't turn out well. For those of you that used the Dylon dyes did you mix them with warm water and did you add the salt? I didn't use the salt so I hope that really doesn't make a difference. I did soak all the shirts in soda ash though (also mixed in warm water even though the directions don't say what temperature to use). Can you tell I'm really nervous about this?:rotfl2: Anyway, I'll post pictures when I get them done.

I'm also a perfectionist and nervous about doing it. I bought my supplies last night and I'll probably look at them for a week until I do it. lol~

Well, I rinsed them all out and they look AWESOME!! :cool1: I have them in the wash right now and after they are dry I will take pictures and post them. I'm so happy! :goodvibes
