Tie Dye Instructions for Spiral Mickey Shirt

OK- so I want to know who made the tulip dye review- Tulip Tie Dye Kit User Review 148526. I can't remember where the site was- I closed my browser window before I copied it.

It's a review of a tulip tie dye kit and when the lady gets done with the review, she holds up her shirt- and it's a mickey tie dye! I lol'd. Not at the shirt, but because I had just been reading this thread! It was a pretty shirt.

So fess up- who did this review? :goodvibes

I liked the review for the record- it made me realize that I need to go buy another kit or two before I get started as there isn't as much dye in it as the package says.

Yay! I'm running behind... I'm going to start stitching my mickey heads in a few minutes. I won't get to dye for a day or two more since I had to order more shirts for my boys (the ones I ordered I decided I needed a size bigger by the time we go) so I want to wait til they come in. But since I have 18 to sew, it will be a day or two anyway.

Does it make a difference in the vibrancy of the colors or how the shirt actually turns out if you twist and band the shirts before you soak them in the soda ash? I've always twisted them after but sometimes it's difficult because the soda ash makes the shirts a little slippery. Can they be twisted and banded prior to soaking? I'd like to know your opinions. Thanks!!!:worship:

The only thing I would worry about if you twisted and banded them before you put them in is that the soda ash mixture wouldn't really sink into to all of the shirt.

In that sense, the dye might not sink is as well, although it could create an interesting effect.

I bought the shirts and a rainbow rock 3 color dye kit. Is there any thing I need to know before I make the shirts? I plan on stiching the Mickey heads tonight.
Which works better fishing line or dental floss? I should have both.

I can't believe this little thread is 88 pages long. Thanks guys for keeping it going and being so helpful as I hardly get on here lately. We are going to make some red and green ones for Christmas trip though so I will be sure to post pics when we get around to making them.

Awesome job taylor! What brand did you use for your black???

It was a tie-dye kit from Wal-Mart, it was with a lot of the kids craft type things & it was a tie-dye/tattoo kit. We actually bought 2 kits fro more colors, the other one was geared more toward girls, but we just picked what colors we wanted. They've all been washed a couple times already. My kids could not resist wearing them. The color is holding up pretty well.

Good morning everyone! Sorry I have been slacking, it has been a busy week! I've got some goodies to share though! AND more later today- waiting for 10am to wash! haha! Darn 24 hours!

I discovered something amazing this week.. SMALL GLOVES!

Tinker what brand of dye's did you use? Your shirts came out AWESOME!!! :)

I use Dharma Trading Fiber Reactive dyes! They works GREAT! If you are doing more than a few shirts, it is cheaper to buy the good stuff from them than to buy a kit somewhere- the only thing you have to remember is you need to use soda ash (sodium carbonate) with it!

It is actually just a regular tank top- I bought it at a local warehouse, but Old navy has similar ones! I just make the bow, and sew it on, then add a little "ok to wash it" glue to make sure it stays!

Thanks! I would have NEVER thought of using brown, but one of my good girlfrieds suggested it, and now I am in LOVE with that color! I did some really cute baby boy onesies in that brown with green and blue, and they turned out sooo cute!

Okay just started trying my first shirt....took me almost an hour to "stich" the mickey head-not really sure what a basting stich is so I just stitched it. Maybe someone can explain that one to me cause as of this moment, I can't see spending an hour per shirt to stich that on.
My question is this-if im going to use the resist, instead of stitching (for time's sake) do I do that before I soak in the ash or after? the directions on the resist bottle say to put on and let dry completely before tye dyeing. If I put it on before the ash and then let it dry, will soaking in the ash take it off? If I put it on after then is it okay to put on the resist when the shirt is still wet from the ash? I guess im not sure how long to wait after soaking in the ash to actually starting to tye dye.
Help me please. :-)

Hi
I'm getting ready to make mine and have a question?? I have the dye's from Dharma trading and is it OK to mix everything before hand. I figure with a toddler around, I need to prep while he's asleep then get dye everything while he's asleep!!

You can soak in soda ash and then let the shirt air dry, then apply the resist, then dye it laying flat-

OR (what I do) apply the resist, and then add 1 tsp of soda ash per bottle of dye and dye it flat!

A basting stitch is like a basic sewing stitch- under and over.. the dont have to be super close together! It takes awhile at first, but once you get the hang of it the process goes faster!

I mix my dyes ahead of time- sometimes a few days ahead even, bc I use SO MUCH the process of filling the bottles takes me an hour or more! I think the instructions on thier website says they can stay for up to 7 days, just be sure to give them a good shake before you use them :cutie:
