Tie Dye Instructions for Spiral Mickey Shirt

We just received our PhotoPass photos, and I wanted to share this with you. Doing the Peace sign was the photographer's idea, which I liked. Feel free to borrow the idea!

Quiltymom, your pre-trip report (to which I got via your dining review and your trip report ) just send me here! Yours look great! And so do everyone else's, too! I haven't seen a single T-shirt which I did not like!! Thanks to the OP for starting this. Now I just have to figure out where to get the colors and other stuff. Nobody does tie-dye here in Germany!!

I highly recommend Dharma. The dyes are great and you can order everything

Actually, I'm still in the withdrawl phase of being back from our Disney trip. Sad, but true. So I'm on the DIS to make my homesickness not so bad. Thanks for your nice comments.

I also think that everone's tees have turned out fantastic! I did see one family at a distance one day at the MK. It could've been Oct. 16. Their shirts were the non-spiral tie dye, but instead of having one Mickey head in the center, there were two heads - one near the top left and the other near the bottom right, with the tying going diagonally. I hope that I explained that correctly. They were really cool! They were too far away and moving too fast for us for me to catch up with them.

I had forgotten all about them until I read this thread again. Was that any of you? If so, I loved the shirts.

Thanks for the link to Dharma, once I figured out the brand they are selling (Procion) I was able to find a German supplier. What a lot of colors to choose from!! Now I am thinking about making a T-Shirt with a princess crown instead of Mickey head for the Pirate and Princess Party in all pink/purple shades...

I also found a great online shop that sells generic t-shirts. I was just wondering, some of the styles I like best (thanks for the tip of not picking one that is too tight), have 95% cotton and 5% spandex. Do you think that would be a problem?

Here are our finished Ts. I am loving the spiral, but i wish Mickey was more defined. I only did one set of stitches around his head. I think the second set would ahve helped a lot, but i was WAY too impatient. Thanks for looking!

These were made with Dharma dyes. We used grape, peackock blue, and kelly green for the swirls and then new black for Mickey.

Yay - more shirts to ooh and aah over! They turned out great. The colors are nice and rich. Maybe you could use the bleach pen to better define the Mickey head? It's just a thought.

And I completely understand about the being impatient part. It is sooooo hard to have to wait to see the results!

I was also thinking about suggesting the bleach pen. Love the colors. My sprials never turned out so well except on DH's XL shirt. I think I'll try Dhamra next time.....I made that Lost comment last time, well I was online to see when Lost will be on again and ABC has these "missing pieces" episodes, about 2 minutes long of New (not deleted) scenes, well in the first one is "Frogurt" the guy with Hurley went to high school with my DH. That was so cool to see. Ok thats it for my off topic tangent.

Here are my results...the flash washed the colors out a bit (they are much richer in person), the Mickey on my husband's shirt is a little crooked and I didn't band the Mickey on my son's shirt close enough to keep the edges distinct, but I still think they look great! I was sure mine would turn out awful since I used a long sleeved shirt and the sleeves would probably look crazy. Luckily I was wrong - I think I like mine most of all! I used the Jacquard kit and found it very easy. I bought 3 kits so I'd have enough extra dye to pre-mix bottles of purple, green and orange, and I still have enough dye to do probably 3-5 more shirts in this super-saturated manner.

I saw a family wearing matching tie-dyed shirts on our trip. It was at Epcot on Monday, Nov. 26 sometime between 5:30 and 6:00 pm. We were sitting under the arches of the Lights of Winter waiting for the tree lighting and the family was walking by, headed towards World Showcase. The shirts were in shades of orange and pink - really cute! They were kind of far away, but it looked like the spiral pattern. I couldn't tell if there was a Mickey head or not. Was this anyone on here?

OK...I was SO very inspired by this thread (BIG thank you to OP who made this seem like a do-able project!)...

So I've purchased the shrits& stitched and banded my son's shirt tonight. Three more shirts to stitch & band.

I could only find the Tulip brand dyes, so I'm hoping it turns out OK. Looks like people have had mixed results with Tulip. But I did make sure to find 100% cotton shirts so hopefully that's where the mixed results have come in...from 50/50 blends vs 100% cotton.

I wish I hadn't ordered my shirt online (wanted something in a semi-fitted style instead of boxy men's style) because I'd start on them all tonight if I could!

I'll be sure to post my pics once they're done. The plan is to do a lime green Mickey head & red and blue spirals (like the other poster who had those AWESOME shirts in red and blue spread out all over the couch!). I hope it works OK...even my 14yo daughter grudgingly agreed to match the family Talk about some Disney magic!

I had a great time making my shirts, using these instructions. One piece of advice: I came out with way more white on my shirts than I would have liked, so don't wrap your shirts too tightly.

I'm starting my shirts for me and DD tomorrow. I've read throught this thread quite a bit but I just want to confirm something - how long should I soak the shirts in soda ash?

I plan on letting the shirts line dry a bit before dyeing.

I can't believe I'm nervous about tye dyeing shirts. I need a life or some sleep or something...

I think my box of soda ash said 20 minutes. I did just what the box said. I squeezed out the excess water. I didn't have the time to let them dry too much. Have fun! Can't wait to see how they turn out!

Maybe we'll see each other in our Mickey shirts....we leave in 9 days too! I'm still waiting for two shirts to come in the mail. I've already stitched & banded the two shirts I could find at the store here. If the shirts don't come by next Tuesday, I'm going to just go purchase more shirts for DH & myself (the ones I"m currently waiting on).

Either way, Tuesday is my tie dye day. I'm also nervous! Such a big project...I really hope it turns out OK.
