Tie Dye Instructions for Spiral Mickey Shirt

Bought supplies for my next round this weekend. Found a huge box of soda ash at Walmart for less than $4. Be careful though, the ingredients need to say sodium carbonate, NOT sodium BIcarbonate. They were right next to each other.

I'm not sure what I did wrong, but my Mickey heads didn't turn out. However, another post said that they used a bleach pen, so I'm hopeful that will do the trick.

The bleach pins bleed into it way to much. use a white paint pen.

I used a bleach pen on mine since most of mine didn't have a good definition around the Mickey Heads. I would trace a couple heads then go back with a q-tip to remove the bleach. I put a piece of foil in the shirt so it wouldn't bleed through to the back.
The blue shirts turned out great this way, but I should have left the bleach on longer on the red shirts.
Here's a couple of shirts from our trip this past Jan. We each had four shirts - 2 blue/green, 2 red/orange/yellow. In each color we had a centered Mickey head and a yin yang Mickey head.


You can see on the yellow/light green shirt that I left the bleach on too long for one of the heads.

I have some "fabric dye resist" that I was thinking of adding to the Mickey head outline before I gather it up to dye. Anyone have any experience doing this?

Thanks! They look great, but making 16 shirts was VERY time consuming, messy, and stressful. I don't know if I'd do it again.
We do get a lot of use out of the shirts though. I use mine when I go to the gym and the kids love wearing matching shirts.

One thing that did help making the shirts was my DH volunteering to rinse out the dye after 24 hours. I started rinsing and was feeling discouraged at how long it was going to take to rinse so many shirts. DH came along and setup some wire shelving in the tub and used the sprayer to rinse them in no time.

I want to mention the shirts and dyes I used. Most of the shirts & dresses I used I ordered from Dharma Trading. Two shirts were from Khols (100% cotton). The Khols shirts didn't take the dye very well and looked washed out.
For the dye I just used a variety pack from Tulip I (think) I picked up at JoAnn Fabrics. After finally deciding on my color combos I had to send DH to Michaels to pick up a few more packets. The packets came with three pouches of powdered dye I had to add to the the bottles myself.
