tie dye - help!

I just did my 1st trial shirt - stiched MM head (though didn't baste - I sewed normal -in & out - cause i didn't know what basting was til just now)

I didn't let the shirt set - since it was a trial just wanted to see if MM turned out at all....it didn't -dh thought it looked like MM - I think just a blob.

My question is - would the problem be from the using the wrong stitch (I did use dental floss) or what?

The dye just bled right under the stiches - the stitching did nothing!

I don't get it////

Did you pull the stitches tight and then bind with rubber bands before dyeing? The stitches don't do anything if you don't pull them tight. Sewing in and out is basting, so that part sounds right.

DH pulled the threads - so not sure if he got it tight enough..

I googled basting & I was going thru the shirt with my stiches - not just stay on the top of the shirt....guessing that was part of the problem
