Tickets linked in MDE to AP??

Hoping somebody that knows about ticket upgrades/AP Renewal and My Disney Experience can give me some good news. I have APs and will need to renew (or get new) next month. I have some 2 day tickets linked to MDE. Can I call passholder renewal and use the ones linked to MDE for upgrade/renewal? I'm fine getting the voucher/certificate. Hate to wait to do it at the park since I wont get there till August.
Seems like with MDE it should be easy for them to verify them (unlike the old paper/plastic tickets) in order to upgrade/use them for renewal. Seems like with MDE we should be able to upgrade online!

1- If they have never been used at all, call and ask.
(You can only use one ticket per upgrade. Tickets can't be combined.)

2 I agree, but Disney is a bit unpredictable with rules.
