Ticket Upgrade to AP question

I'm going to DL June 18-20 and wanted to buy a 3 day hopper ticket before going and then upgrade it there for a Deluxe AP. I can get a 3 day for $162 at my Credit Union, which is cheaper than the disneyland online price.

The 20th is a blackout day for the Deluxe AP. Can I buy the upgrade on the 20th and still have access to the parks that day? I'll be leaving after the Electric Light parade on the 20th - should I just wait until then to purchase the AP? If I upgrade before the 20th, do I lose use of the parks on the 20th even though my 3 day would have let me in?

Block out dates do not apply to the first day of your passport so YES, buy it on the 20th.

Yes. Upgrade on the 20th and they will let you use it because blockouts don't apply on the first day; upgrade before that and you will not be allowed in on the blockout day without buying a blockout pass.

Yes, and you pay the difference between what you paid for your ticket and what the AP costs. You can only go up, not down, in price.

And since you pay the difference, there's no point in buying a discounted ticket, if you have to go out of your way to do so. Just so ya know. (they do it differently at WDW)

Hijack question...

If I bought my Deluxe AP a month ago and don't get it activated until I go on July 5th, which is a blockout date, will I be able to have admission to the park that day without paying the $40 blockout day ticket? I was going to upgrade to premium AP that day but if the blockout day doesn't apply to your first visit then I probably won't. We were also thinking about just going to DTD on the 5th so I don't have to spend anymore $$$
