ticket upgrade to AP during blockout dates

I know this used to be allowed at Disney (I did it xmas 2019), but I just read that disney is no longer allowing it according to at least a few CM. But I'm curious if it was ever allowed at Universal, and if it is still allowed at universal. I would like to upgrade a ticket that was used during a blockout date to an AP, so am I only eligible for the AP that included the blockout date? or can I upgrade to any AP that I qualify for (like used to be allowed at Disney).

For example, if I buy 3-day park-to-park tickets to use Jan 2,3,4, and I want to upgrade to an AP, would I only be eligible to upgrade to the APs that don't blockout Jan 2,3?

I assume I am only eligible for the AP that don't blockout Jan 2 & 3 since I will use the tickets Jan 2 & 3. But it would be a nice surprise if I could upgrade the tickets to one of the lower level AP. Disney used to allow it, I did it a few times, including a few months before the pandemic started.

Some people have reported that you can do it but apparently they will escort you to the exit after you upgrade.

No idea what the answer is, but I do know that if you had a 3-park ticket, you could only upgrade to a 3-park AP if you used the entitlement to enter the 3rd park.

I know you used to be able to do this, upgrade to a seasonal on the 4th before you leave the park, since the 4th is not blocked out? i am not sure what the current policy is.

Are you sure about this? I thought it was that if you'd used the 3rd park, you HAD to upgrade to a 3-park ticket, which is not the same as saying you can't upgrade to a 3-park AP if you hadn't used the third park. UO isn't going to stop you from upgrading to a more expensive (3-park) AP and insist you only upgrade to a less expensive (2-park) AP just because you haven't been to Volcano Bay yet. But you can't get the three-park ticket, use VB for your summer trip, and then upgrade to a 2-park ticket.

Starry-solo means:
if you used the entitlement to enter the 3rd park, you could only upgrade to a 3-park AP.
You two are saying the same thing.
Got it! I just re-read emphasizing different words, and I see what you mean. It's so strange how something can be ambiguous when written out, but the meaning would be quite clear if you heard it spoken. Thanks for the clarification.

Well, at least we're both clear on the policy!

Thanks for the help everyone. I will definitely wait until Jan 4th to upgrade, since if I upgrade earlier, it will block out the days I want to go. I'm even going to wait and do it last thing before we leave.

Has anyone ever had an upgrade be "free"? If I end up upgrading to the power pass, I don't think I will actually owe anything (maybe a little since I didn't look up if taxes are included).

If I end up having to get the preferred pass I will owe a bit of money, but I still won't be upset if I have to do that since it's only $40 per person more than our tickets were, and we will use the AP over the summer. I'm gonna try for the power pass though!

Thanks!

I upgraded 2 tickets to a Seasonal & a Power for a grand total of $4.
Then I realized for an extra $50, I would get all the Preferred discounts so I upgraded the Power to Preferred the next day.

Just be prepared, they might not let you retroactively upgrade to an AP that would have been blocked out. I'm not sure.

I know I once went with a 2 park 3 day ticket during a time when there were concerts going on and I would have been blocked out of the studios side on a seasonal AP, but I was still able to upgrade to a seasonal on the last night of my trip even though I had used the ticket on the studios side that day. We went to both parks on all 3 days and then on the last night I stopped at the train station in Hogsmeade and upgraded just before closing. I want to say I did this in 2018 so whether they are still doing it or not I have no idea.

I have upgraded various tickets from Undercover Tourist to seasonal passes and have had it be free before. I think the most I've ever paid to upgrade has been around the 20 dollar mark, but I always get a seasonal pass. And I always like to do my upgrades at the hogsmeade train station. they never have a line, at least not when I've been.
