Just want to confirm - it used to be that you didn't pay for a ticket if a child turned 3 on vacation (paid for the age on arrival). A friend asked and that's what I thought but thought I would make sure things had not changed.

Nothing has changed.
And, I will also say that no "proof" at that age is required.

That's still the Disney policy. Your child's age at arrival to WDW will be considered the age of the child for the entire trip. And as PP posted above, no proof of age required by Disney.

I had purchased a 3-9 ticket for my child before our vacation.
On day 2 of our trip she turned 10. She was wearing her birthday button. The castmember scanning the ticket asked how old she was. My daughter answered "10". The castmember said her tickets were for 3-9 year old only.
Wouldnt let us through. Told us to update her ticket.
In the end we didnt have to update but it was a huge hassle and we lost 30 minutes or so.

Some of the CMs fancy themselves as "police" and mistakenly do absolutely the wrong thing in their misguided zeal.
Fortunately, there are other CMs who DO know the actual rules.

I explained I was not trying to cheat. I purchased tickets from Disney. I gave ages. I explained an upcoming bday and paid the amount the asked me to.
She is now 11 and almost 5'5" tall. And has an age 10+ , 4 day pass on her magicband.

Totally (TOTALLY) an ignorant CM's fault.

I
would
have
been
furious!

And, we would have had a LOT of extra FPs that day. ;)

That's horrible (though extra FP would be nice .... hopefully you got something for that!). I will pass the information along!!
