If I want to upgrade disneyworld.com purchased package tickets to annual passes, do I need to wait until after day one of using them? Also, would there be any difference if I waited until our last day to purchase them than if I upgraded on day one? I read the sticky, but wasn't sure about these questions.

You should use the tickets at least once before upgrading.

Correctly, a "new" (not renewal) annual pass you upgrade to has started on the first day you used the original (submitted) ticket. A "renewed" AP starts the day after its predecessor expires and the renewal, which may consist of an upgrade, must occur plus/minus 30 days of the expiration date.

So it does not matter whether you upgrade almost immediately or wait until your last day.

The policy is that no change is returned if the price of the AP is less than the value of the submitted ticket. This can sometimes happen if you are a Disney Vacation Club member for which APs are priced lower.

For tickets purchased at a discount or before some price increases, there has been a policy of propagating your discount through to the computation of the final purchase price* of an upgrade (a manual step called bridging). If the dollar amount is large, some CMs seem to be offended and give you a hard time. If you first upgrade the ticket only by adding a day or two and wait a day and then upgrade to AP, the bridging amount is split and does not appear as big to any one ticketing CM. (Note: :sad2: Tickets purchased at Disney ticket booths are not eligible for bridging.)

* The final result is that, for partially used Magic Your Way tickets only, you pay the difference between what your original ticket would have cost at the ticket booth on the day of upgrade and what the AP would have cost at the same ticket booth on the same day. This policy is subject to change.

I would think that Guest Services could do the conversion at any time, though I am not positive. As to the timing question, it would make the most sense to convert them as early as possible so that you could take advantage of any discounts that are available to AP holders such as the ability to buy a TIW card. This savings alone could be significant. Might as well get it early in the trip. That is, of course, as long as there is no FP+ disadvantage to being an AP holder.
