Ticker help please!

Hi,
I have been desperately trying to add a ticker. Can someone help me? When I have created the ticker it tells you to cut and paste it. Once you cut it where on earth do you paste it? You don't have to paste it every time you write a message do you? And how come I am the only one that is seemingly unable to manage this simple task? lol
