My DH has been using my TI-83 calculator that I have had for 11 years and it has finally crashed. Does anyone know of any good deals for the TI-84? Those calculators are so expensive, but he needs it for all of his chemistry classes. TIA.

Any chance your local Office Max is doing the 15% off everything that fits in their bag discount this week? (Ours is and we got the bag in our local newspaper). You could use that to get 15% off.

83+ and 84+ are very similar. The 84+ had more loaded programs. I use the 83+ with my students for Algebra I and Honors Geometry. It should last them at least through Calculus. For many, it will be the only calculator they need.

They tend to run specials for $99ish around the beginning of school. (There are some apps available online if his need is only temporary. You'd hate to buy a calculator if he won't need it for long.)

I once needed one for a college math class. I ended up checking one out of the student center for the entire semester. It was absolutely free! You might want to check this out.

We got my DD's graphing calculator on ebay...it is a silver edition something or other...definitely a TI. (She is not home right now, so I can't ask her).

Got a great deal on it, maybe $75 plus about 5 for shipping. She has had it for3 years, and it is still going strong!

Just out of curiosity, what chem class is he taking that requires the 83 or 84? While it is convenient to have the graphing calculators, most any scientific calculator will do the trick for a lot of classes.

I searched and searched for DD's calculator. I was determined to get the one that the school recommended for the best possible price. I ended up finding a sale at Staples (think it was $99) . . . and price matching it to Office Max, where I had a $15 or $20 off a $100 purchase card (can't remember exactly how much the coupon was for -- and I had to add in some pens or something to pass the $100 mark) . . . and then I used my teacher card, which gives me a rebate every quarter. I don't know how much of the rebate I received came from the calculator and how much came from other items I'd bought, but I was satisifed with the cost. It ended up being better than I could do on ebay, and I knew it was brand-new.

I did think it was worthwhile to buy "the calculator". The teachers have a special calculator that hooks to their overhead projector and projects the work, and they demonstrate how to work problems on THAT CALCULATOR. I thought having the exact model that the teacher uses would make life a little easier.

Also, my math teacher friend told me that the TI-84 Silver Edition Plus (the current "it calculator") should see her through both high school and college. I didn't mind buying an expensive item . . . but I didn't want to buy a $50 calculator this year and then be forced to buy a $100 model two years later. I wanted to make the purchase JUST ONCE. She also understands that IF it gets lost or stolen, it will be replaced with a $1 four-function calculator.

I just bought my son's on Ebay for around $60. There is a company that sells calculators from teacher training sessions. His has just a few scuff marks on the back and works perfectly.

I bought the TI-NSPIRE about a year ago. It has 2 keypads and one is the 84-plus. I had office depot price match staples and then used a coupon and got it for about $100.

by the way it was a big hassle to use the coupon because it said that technology was not included and I argued with the manager and he would not even try it. So I called the 800 number and they did it for me and did store pickup while I waited in the parking lot and then went in and picked it up right from the manager. Needless to say I have never shopped there again.

I bought one at Wal Mart last year and it was over $100, but I needed it right away. A classmate of mine bought one from another student who had listed one on Craig's List and got it for $50. Might want to see if you can find a used one there if it is in good condition.

I just bought a TI-nspire for my statistics class from Walmart, it has the TI-84 keypad , it was clearanced for about $75.
:woohoo:

Great, thanks for the ideas. He wants to use the same calculator he is use to, so that is why he wants to stick with it. I figure we can pass it on to one of our DDs when they need it for school after my DH is done with it.

I just had a TI-84+ silver edition delivered today from Office Max. They are giving 15% off this week plus free shipping on their website. I paid $110.49 plus tax. 15% off good thru Feb. 27th.

I don't have an answer to your question, but wanted to share my budget find about five years ago. DS needed one of these same calculators for school and I did not want to spend nearly $100 on one of these graphing calculators. We were at a local flea market and stumbled across one and got it for $10...what a steal. It still works perfectly to this day.

I just thought of something...maybe, if there is a classifieds type board at the local high schools or colleges, you can put up your name and number, and maybe someone who no longer needs theirs will sell it to you. :thumbsup2

I went to Target today and they had them for $107.

DISdreamin' - He is taking Chemistry I but will have to take Advanced Chem and also Organic Chem.
