Thunderstorms and tent camping

I just checked the extended Orlando forcast which is predicting scattered thunderstorms for a couple of days during our stay. I'm guessing a tent isn't the best place to be during a thunderstorm. Any suggestions?

Also, if it's raining when we arrive, should we wait until it stops to put up the tent? It just seems like the rain would tend to get inside easier during assembly.

By the way, I bit the bullet and bought a dining canopy. I'll probably think it was money well spent when it's raining.

Thunderstorms and Florida go hand in hand

I would say with the trees higher than you are, you will be pretty safe - but just to be on the safe side, anytime storms are approaching wander on down to Crockets Tavern and have a cold one. While it may not keep you any safer, you probably won't care after a few

In case of a tornado warning I always figure we can head for a comfort station--concrete block and few windows. I'll be the large lady with a dog under my arm--he's heading for safety too!!

We tent camped in August and had some brutal weather over that weekend. We stayed under the dining canopy until it was no longer a dry place to be and then headed for our tent. We felt fine (except for the fact the tent leaked and was rather small) and weren't worried at all.

Camped over the weekend in a new tent that is much larger, so if we find ourselves confined to the tent again because of weather at least we'll have some room to move around in!

The dining canopy is truly a luxery that we really enjoy. We have a Coleman one that is quite large and being able to sit inside the screened in area is comfy and relatively bug free.

You should get some replies to this after this past weekend as soon as some DIS campers return home.

We had a doozie this past weekend here in Orlando. Lots of rain and LOTS of Lightining.

The weatherman reported over 6,700 strikes in 2 hours. Most of it was a little bit west and north (Clermont got the brunt), but it was crashing around our house as well (Lake Buena Visa, 3 miles from DTD just up Apopka-Vineland)

Florida is not called the lightining capital for the world for nothing.

If it happens to downpour when you get there wait it out. But check out the high ground on the site.. That will make it easy not to have a puddle to contend with. I have spent many hours in a tent in a thunderstorm. But I don't like it. I would rather have a real roof over my head thank you very much.
