Again, I ask..... how long do I need to "occupy" my reservation so as not to upset you? Because, whether I "use" it or not, anybody who reserves a campsite for just one night has potentially created the condition causing you such grief.

What you are not understanding is that by using a Loophole in the system you or others like you are denying people like us the joy of going to Disney. My family has 7 members. If we rented rooms we would have to rent two rooms or a suite. That is way too expensive and not our idea of fun. We are campers. We own a camper and enjoy camping at Disney. We have to economize to be able to afford Disney's extreme prices. We cook and eat at the camper to save money. Lets imagine I had promised the kids we could go to Disney for Halloween. I tried every day for three months to get a camp site but they were booked solid. We finally give up and pass on going. It further disappoints when I hear that there are empty sites everywhere. Look at it this way. 1-It denies my family the opportunity to go to Disney. 2- It denies Disney and it's share holders the opportunity to take my money. Now multiply that by say 25 throwaway sites. That means Disney conservatively looses about $500.00 a day per site on missed sales just so you can game the system and get early FPs. To finish I concede you are not doing anything illegal or against the rules. You are playing the system but I want you to know there are hundreds of people like us that you are impacting. Will you care. Probably not but at least rent a hotel room and leave the campsites alone. There are over 25,000 rooms and only 1200 camp sites.

Well, realistically, only 90 campsites. No one is booking premium campsites for $100+. It's the few 90 tent sites that are getting booked.

HOWEVER, that said, December is always a SUPER busy time at the Fort. I can't get a single weekend night. But I can get pretty much everything else during the week. 90 tent sites and it isn't sold out any weekday night of the month. I don't think it's really keeping people from using the Fort.

I think as lovers-of-the-Fort, we get our feelings a tad hurt that people use it for a "throwaway" room. As if it wasn't good enough for a real Disney stay. It's special to us. I mean, I've stayed all over and still, I find that Fort Wilderness tent sites and 2-bedroom villas at VWL are my favorite places to stay. So far, I have yet to see a Fort camper who has booked well enough in advance who could not get what they wanted.

I should have planned sooner, but we're living in Scotland right now and I had no idea we would be back in time for a Disney trip in December. It was a last minute decision. I consider booking in Sept. for a long trip to be short notice. Booking last minute for 4 days or less usually works out, but not for a 12 day trip, which is what we were wanting.

I'm not arguing that people should be booking throwaway rooms, but I think some of us Fort fans are taking it personally. We shouldn't. Heck, if I get a stay at the Fort and a bunch of people have booked throwaway rooms, that just means the loops will be quieter and I'll have the showers all to myself in the mornings. :) (I usually do anyway!)

So Fort *tent* campers, we need to make sure we book well enough in advance. $61 or so for a deposit on a trip we aren't POSITIVE we'll take but might take is probably worth it. Put down deposits for the weeks you'd like to tent camp well in advance, and we should all be just fine. The only people I think this really impacts is Florida residents who might want a weekend camping.

And let's also remember that a LARGE percentage of FW campers don't actually go to the parks. It's a very popular campground for locals, as it is so nice and really top notch, as campgrounds go. Should we complain that those campers use up campsites for those of us who actually use the Fort to go to Disney parks? Probably not.

I'm not trying to argue for the practice of throwaway rooms, but I think it is a good idea to try not to let it bother us too much. :)

Good. Feel free to book the campsite before anyone else does.

Well Said, flametar, I couldn't agree more. It seems people are getting the "entitiled" attitude for everything and don't care who it affects! Don't flame me, I am entitled to my opinion, too;)

Fortunately I am an obsessive planner so people don't ruin my family's time at Disney. Unfortunately for other families they are not as well informed or able to plan ahead as far I can. I'm trying to explain to those certain people how throwaway rooms or sites affect others and also Disney's bottom line. Which in turn helps Disney afford to keep building new things for all of us.

I personally think Disney needs to require you to actually occupy a camp site if it is rented. At least on weekends were there seems to be the most abuse. I also think Disney should offer people the option to purchase privileges like US does. That alone would help a lot.

This is completely nuts. How much time you spend in your room is no ones business.

He's not talking about a room though. I get what he's talking about. I suggested that the loophole of renting a tent site could easily be closed if the party actually did NOT have a tent. Seemed simple to me. When someone reserves one and they are coming in on DME I doubt they are flying in with a tent. My suggestion was that you reserve a tent spot you have to actually show up at the fort and a CM has to see you actually have a tent. My head was handed to me. Disney will close this way of doing things when and only IF they want to.

Flametmr just make sure you book super early and beat the crowds. You are banging your head up against the wall around here.

I don't think they'd ever be able to enforce occupation of a camp site.

In order to minimize the number of throwaway rooms they could things like:
  1. Offer advance ADR & FP+ perks for a fee, like universal. Also like Universal, it should cost about $50-$75 per person per day per park in addition to admission or $10/fastpass, and pre-pay ADRs booked earlier than 180 days ($10/person like the cancellation).
  2. Make a single night campsite cost $800, 2 nights $400, and downwards to a week being $300. This would curtail 1 and 2 night bookings (sorry folks legitimately looking to book for 1 or 2 nights!) but not impact folks staying for a week or so.
  3. Offer FP+ and ADR bookings available only on the days you are staying (including check in and check out). The major loophole is folks being able to book a FP+ or ADR for days they are NOT staying on property. So if you've booked for 1 night, you get 2 days of FP+ and ADR perks...like parking is now. Sorry split-stay folks, you get FP+ 30 days out for half your trip.
  4. No Magic Bands for stays under 3 nights (again, sorry to folks only staying 1 or 2 nights)

Of course, should anything change due to the abuse people would go nuts. Please see any GAC to DAS thread.

Completely not true. LOTS of people fly in to camp. We've done a total of 30 days tent camping at Fort Wilderness using DME and our camping gear. We just don't bring food stuff and use the dining plan. It's a pretty awesome deal, especially when the weather is extra nice.

That's for sure. Some people refuse to even acknowledge that they are scamming the system. At least own your arrogance. I guess the richer you are the farther the disconnect. I'm done here and going on with my life. Have a Magical Day or as we say in the South. Bless Your Heart.

Fine I am not talking about the ones that do then it doesn't apply to you.

As one who does, would you object to my suggestion then to help cut down on the ones that only do so only for the " throwaway loophole " and don't actually do what you do? I thought there was no longer DP for the fort ?

;) I've only been a southerner since 2008 and I use that " Bless your Heart " many many times

No, you can totally use the dining plan at the Fort. Just not free dining.

Honestly, I got worked up about throwaway rooms at first. But the more upset I got, the more I started to realize that there's nothing you can do about what other people do. You just work the system yourself (like I just did) and hope for the best. People cut in line while I'm there, but if I spend my time getting angry about it, then the jerks win. I've seen WAY too many Disney guests ruin their own good time by worrying about other people's bad behavior. Does the throwaway room practice hurt others/ I don't really think so. There are campsites available on weekdays all fall. And as a very frequent camper (and former Florida resident who was constantly scoping out availability when I lived there last year when FP+ first started) I don't really think the practice is as common as everyone thinks. If it were, then there wouldn't be tent campsites available at high volume times like Christmas Eve of THIS year. But there are.

Nothing is worth getting angry over...frustrated yes ..not angry. So Violet would you be willing to show the tent like I asked ?

You mean show my tent at check-in time? That's silly. When I get to the Fort after flying, my tent is being delivered to our site by DME. When we drive, it is buried in the back of the car. Have you ever checked in at Fort Wilderness? You dont' get out of the car if you are driving and using a campsite. You drive through a check-in post.

But also, I'm a grown up.

And plus, Fort staff make the rounds in each loop several times a day. They can just look at the site and see if a tent is there or not.

I'm a grown up. I'm not a high school student. I don't need to show my tent to Disney to prove I am camping there. Do guests of Pop Century have to prove something, too? Because that's the next step up when throwaway-users can't get a campsite. I'm not saying that Disney can't decide to enforce an abandoned room policy if they see a room hasn't been touched or a campsite is bare. But to ask me to pull out my tent to show them? Silly. Plus, anyone can buy a 1-man Coleman tent for $13 at Walmart. I'm not sure what the point of showing one's tent would be. It would prove nothing. :confused3

I'm done my day is slipping away here

Oh, how many days have I felt that exact same way? :lmao:

Well said.

For those following along on my throwaway room saga, I have now been able to book SDMT for 2 on 11/23. It's fascinating to me that this was unavailable at midnight on the night the date opened up for me, but I was able to get it today - 2 overlapping times. To be clear, I have probably checked 50 times since the window opened up, so it was in no way a slam dunk or a cake walk.

My new analysis: Does a throwaway room guarantee you those hard to get FPs? No, but maybe you have a better shot than just waiting until 30 days out.

If I pay for a campsite for one night and I don't cancel it, who am I "scamming"? Isn't it my campsite? I bought it.

:thumbsup2:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

****and with it you bought the MBs that go with it and access to ADRs at 180+10 and FPs at 60 days too! :thumbsup2:thumbsup2

I love how so many are saying that I MUST sleep at night in the 'shoebox' that is a 'value room' in order to 'earn' access to my MB, ADRs, FPs etc etc. What I MUST do is PAY for it. That's IT!
