Throwaway room (read post #2041 or #2710 before posting)

Can someone answer a few questions for me pretty pleeeeeease? I only have a couple days to decide if I want to book a throwaway room before the 60 day window.

1. Will our 2 year old get a magic band?

Yes, all people listed on the reservation will get one.

2. When do I book the throwaway room, the beginning of our trip or the end? Our ticket will be 5 or 6 days, starting on a Sunday October 26. If I book it for Sunday night will I be able to book fastpasses for Sunday throughout the whole 5-6 days or just the 2 days?

At the beginning, so you get the 60-day advantage as soon as possible. Initially it will be just for the two days, but then you'll be able to do 60 days from each successive date. See my post above for an explanation.

3. We are a family of 6 traveling with my Mom and Dad and DHs mom, sis, and niece. We have 11 people total. Could I book one campsite for all of us? I notice when booking online, it is counting the 2 year old. Do I just leave him out? Is he needing a magic band? I haven't bought tickets yet, do they send him a ticket?

I'm not familiar with booking campsites, but I do believe they count. He does not need a ticket though since he is under 3.

4. If my other family members buy their tickets separately, can they all link them to the registration and get magic bands?

They get MagicBands based on the reservation, not tickets. Tickets and bands get linked into your MDX account to be used together.

If they have their own MDX accounts, they can link their tickets, and you need to "invite" them to yours to be able to book FP+ on their behalf.

If not, you can create them as "managed" profiles under your own, and you register all the tickets in your MDX, and assign them to particular people.

5. Is parking covered for more than one car? We will have three.

I believe only one car is included, but never really needed to know...

6. Does a 2 year old need a fast pass to ride a ride if, say, they don't get a magic band or ticket (depending in how you answer question 1)

A 2 year old does not need a FP, as long as they are accompanied by an adult who does.

OK I promise I read a TON of these threads but I just want to make sure I am doing this right and not messing up. We decided today to switch to offsite and stay at WBC.

I really REALLY want to attempt to get a 7DMT FP and I know my only shot is probably to do a dummy reservation. I understand how it works and will attempt to book a campsite -- it would be worth it for the savings on parking/MB alone.

What I'm now following is WHEN should I book that campsite for, to maximize my chances? I saw some people say you only get the FP for the two days you book for (check in/check out day)? And then others that you get it for the length of your passes?

Can someone break it down for me so I understand what to do? Here is our plan for the week so far - we will most likely purchase a 6 day non-hopper.

Saturday 15-Nov - travel only, no parks
Sunday 16-Nov - MK
Monday 17-Nov - Epcot
Tuesday 18-Nov - AK
Wednesday 19-Nov - MK

If you want to book 1 room for throwaway (campsite) pick the 18th or the 20th. Reason being----both days would put your MK day at 61 days. In addition I would not pick the 15th because by default weekends are more crowded than weekdays and your 16th at MK is a Sunday.

I'd pick the 20th- at this time based on my own experience if you pick the 20th- you will be able to book ALL of your FPs once your window opens up for your ENTIRE trip. This will give you a 61st day at MK a 60th day at HS----and so on and so forth.

I would not book for 11/15 because you'll lose out on the parking perk for a day.

That all changed with the advent of free dining, room discounts, FP+ and the A&E hysteria. I have been to Disney (quite by accident) when it was free dining and getting a walk up reservation to eat anywhere we liked was a real nightmare.
When I first learned about throwaway rooms, I thought of booking one, truly. I am staying onsite, but I was going to up 1 day so my window would open earlier. I am one of the guests who is only staying 7 days. Then I decided there is a fine line between planning the most perfect magical experience for my 2 granddaughters and needing therapy.
So, I did not book the throwaway and threw my chances to the wind. Yes, I was one of those burning the midnight oil at 180 days, and yes, when my 180 day window magically opened it did not work. So, I had to quietly rip my hair out for an hour and wait for the phone lines to open, but I was able to secure every single dining reservation I wanted. We will be dining in castles with princesses, beasts, and grand restaurants with Pooh characters, Mary Poppins, aquariums and even a Disney Junior meal. I have since picked up Tomorrowland Terrace, chanced upon the glitch which opened for the Candlelight Processional and booked a week before it officially opened, decided last week I wanted Akershus for 6 and after 5 tries, got it, same with a LTT reservation I have been checking daily for a better time. I've got BBB, Pirates League, Wonderland Tea Party, and though my 60 day window has not yet opened, I am armed with the knowledge that I have the patience of Job and I will wait in line for A&E for hours to secure a space for my Granddaughters to meet the Frozen princesses.
Reading this thread almost made me want to jump on the phone and get an extra day at my resort but no, I will wait and things will fall into place for me, as they will for most of us on this thread.
Kudos to those who plan, good luck to those who don't but above all, do whatever is in your comfort zone to have a wonderful experience for you and your family while being respectful of the fact that every person who walks beside you is in quest of the very same thing.
Have a great time and above all, come out of it with your sanity intact!!

You are already staying onsite...I'd never book an extra night just to add to my 180 if I was already staying onsite. Your examples (ADRs) aren't generally the reasons that people book a throwaway room. They do so because they are staying offsite and want the MBs, the 2 days worth of included parking and first and foremost- a chance to ride 7DMT without a 2 hour wait. Before I decided to book a throwaway I did some searching. For a week I looked for 7D at the 30 days out mark....came up with NOTHING.

While an offsiter MIGHT get an FP by pure luck for 7DMT...the reality is that it's probably a 1% chance. In general- all the patience in the world is not going to get you an FP for 7DMT or AE if you are an offsite guest. I am reminded of the common phrase---ya gotta pay to play-----and that is why we are doing it. It has nothing to do with needing therapy. It's about maximizing our disney vacation.

Looks for one of my posts not far before this one where I describe how the 60 day window works.

You can 60 days + the length in days of your reservation from check-in. You do not get it for the whole trip initially - just the two days in the case of a throwaway room. After that, you get 60 days exactly from the date you want to make the FP+ reservations for.

If the extra day advantage is important to you for a given day, you want to make the reservation cover that as the second day. It's not much of an advantage though, as longer reservations will have a greater advantage.

I cant promise my analogy will make it clear but let me give it a try. Our original plans were 2 weeks in our Marriott timeshare and 1 night throwaway. We have 7 day passes. We decided instead to add 5 nights at the beginning of our trip at the Dolphin using * points. At our 60 day FP+ booking date we were able to book Sept 24th through the 29th all on 60th day(we only booked 4 days of park stuff here though). We could have also booked FP's any day from the 60th day back to July. Then we were able to book 1 day at a time on the 60th day for ea add'l day we wanted. By waiting until part way through your trip for the TA room you'll get more days in for FP quicker although you'd be booking some for the 58th day etc.

So, you were able to book your entire length of stay for Dolphin portion at 60 days from check in. For the other off site days you were still able to book 60 days in advance, but only one day at a time. Still not clear how the throwaway helps in the middle of your stay, instead of the beginning...

If you book it so that the checkout day is the _most important_ day for which you want as much FP+ advantage as possible, then you get an extra day advantage over the 60 days.

If it doesn't matter that much to you, then do it at the beginning.

I don't have any direct experience with this, but my guess would be never.

I think the theory behind the throwaway room is that you book it and actually pay for it, whether you use the room or not.

People have had their FPs cancelled for doing nothing at all. They just wake up one morning and they're gone. I wouldn't risk cancelling the room personally.

I would imagine if you have actual tickets attached to your MDE account, the FP is tied to that, not the resort reservation (that just allows for the 60 day booking). For example, I have tickets right now and could make FP selections for the next 30 days, but not using them till December. Once you are inside the 30 day mark (your entire stay is within 30 days - so last day is 30 days away, not first day of stay), cancelling the room would do nothing since everyone can book inside the 30 days with tickets.

Um, another option, that's free to anyone, is getting in line at night. Anyone who gets in line for an attraction before closing time will get on the ride.

I've been going for years, and truly FP+, in my limited experience, has only made evenings less crowded.

Mind, you sometimes have to ignore "POSTED" wait times. Late at night, they often broadcast considerably longer waits that what is posted.

Recently, Harry Potter at Universal was literally walk on half an hour before the park closed. The day time rush for Potter is considerably greater than 7DMT.

We also rode 7DMT late at night. about an hour before the park closed, it still had 45minutes posted. We went on something else, then came back. We got in line about 15minutes before park closing. I think the posted wait was still 40 minutes. there was still a line, and plenty of folks got in line after us, but we only waited about 20-25minutes, and we got to see the entire interactive queue. When we rode it with a FP, we did not see the queue.

Pretty much everything else we rode after 9pm, expect BTMRR was under 15 minutes. Pan still had a half hour wait pretty late. Space Mtn probably also had a good wait, but even with a FP in the PM, riding it took nearly half an hour. Seems like maybe it broke down part of both our MK days????

Of course one would hope so but having read about people's Fastpasses wiped out when they added the DDP, I wouldn't chance it!
