Throwaway room (read post #2041 or #2710 before posting)

I apologize if this has already been asked and answered (I looked but can't find it), but my question is, if you do book a throwaway room/campsite do you actually have to check in in order to be able to use the FP+'s that you booked?

TIA, Karen :)

No you do not need to physically check in. We did this end of May, and only did online check in. Our 2 parking days was attached to our Magic bands.

So you did not have to go to the campsite to get the free parking attached to your magic band? Also, if you don't check in, how do you activate the tickets that are attached to the band?

Has anyone cancelled a throwaway room? I'm wondering if it is cancelled like 10 days before do the FP+ reservations stay or are they cancelled?

We stay DVC so throwaway rooms don't appy to us but I still find the concept intriguing. What happens if someone would book and check in at a tent campground site at Fort Wilderness for a week and never use it. If it is paid for but not used, what does Disney do, if anything?

The thing that kinda drives me crazy about these throwaway rooms is this.....as a guest who stays at Fort Wilderness frequently, sometimes it can be difficult to add a night or two onto our reservation and many times, it's because of these "throwaway" rooms. We had some friends come in around the same time as us last year, they wanted to stay one extra night but Disney didn't show any availability at FW. That night there were at least 10 open campsites in our loop alone, and several other loops had empty sites too. You can blame this on 'no-shows' but I highly doubt THAT may people no show or arrive much later than 12am.

That would certainly frustrate me.

We are planning a sudden "last minute" trip. I made all ADRs this week...and got everything I wanted despite it being short notice. We are planning to stay offsite. I haven't bought tickets yet. In searching to see if I can buy magic bands and have them sent to my home, I think that can ONLY be done for Disney resort guests. I can buy them at the parks on the day of arrival. I don't think I can buy them at a resort on the day of arrival if I'm not staying at the resort. So I'd have to brave the crowds at DTD or pay for parking to go to the TTC to get the magic bands the day we arrive to be ready to enter the parks early the next morning.

I read something about magic bands being available for purchase as gifts 8/19, so I'll see what I can find tomorrow. I'm hoping they will sell them online (and ship them like other merchandise).

In stumbling upon this thread, it seems like as of today, the only day to get magic bands mailed out or get them at a resort is with a "throwaway" room or to stay the first night onsite then moving offsite.

As of today, that is true. The _rumor_ is that you will be able to purchased them without activation, but as far as I know the purchase must still be done in person for now.

You CAN go to a resort and purchase the bands - they are available in the gift shop at every resort. You don't need to be a guest. However, you DO need to have your tickets with you to associate with the bands, as at least as of today they must be activated at time of purchase.

Anyone know when Magic Bands will be able to be linked to a credit card for purchases? I really missed that aspect of MB's when I moved from the BC to the Dolphin...

I remember people were doing that, more back in the August timeframe. I think there was a time when you could cancel and still keep the FPs but I think they closed that loophole now. So you have to book the room and pay for it to keep the FPs. Not sure what happens to the bands if they already shipped, I guess they would let you keep them. To do this now, you would have to at least pay the one night deposit for a room-only reservation, and that would get you two days of FPs.

So what if you have MB's from a previous trip. I.e., you don't need the MB's, just the ability to load FP+'s at 60 days. Kinda handy for getting A&E FP's? So long as you have tickets linked to cover the days you make selections for...would the MDE. system not let you keep them even if you cancel the room prior to the paid in full date ?

I have heard nothing really about it since they first talked about all the neat things MagicBands will do...

I don't think having MagicBands has any bearing on the loophole. MagicBands are just the "key" for accessing the FP+ in the parks. It's the reservation that enables (and possibly disables - I've not really heard about it) the 60-day window, regardless of MagicBands.

I think they may just leave that as something for resort guest only. If you think about it it makes sense as it's the same as the old key to the world card which only resort guest could use, well you could put a credit card down on the room for charging it wasn't actually linked to the card itself. The key to the world card would charge to your room and then they would charge it to your card on file, the Magic Bands are set up the same way.

I have booked a throwaway room for the past 3 trips we have taken. 2 of the trips I booked 2 nights and this time around I booked 1 night. (at values). I also paid for the nights- I will never cancel and not pay but try to keep the FPs.

Here is where we find value- YMMV:

1. last year it was the only way to get the MBs and to us that was worth the cost alone.
2. Currently our 1 night room cost me 94 bucks including tax. We will save 30 on parking. We will also be able to park at ASMu and take the bus to MK avoiding the TTC mess.
3. We LOVE LOVE LOVE EMH. We make sure our ressie allows us early hours at MK- for us that hour is the MAGIC hour. We get 3 times as much done during that hour than any other hour.
4. The 60 day window is worth the 94 bucks for our family of 3 alone. We were able to get 7DMT at 60 days out. I checked today and there are no spots available for our dates. This leads me to believe that FP for 7DMT is NOT gonna happen for any off site guests in the near future. With a toddler we cannot wait in a 90 minute line so it's either a throwaway room or not riding it at all.

If Disney ever requires a 2 night stay ----we will still book a throwaway room for 2 nights. (we've done it twice before actually) It's just worth that much to us. Even with the throwaway room we are spending less than 150 per night for our huge 2 bedroom condo at bonnet creek.

After I take out parking we are down to 64 bucks for our family of 3. Is an extra hour in the parks and the ability to ride 7DMT worth 21 bucks a person? For us the answer is YES.

What you consider valuable for your family might be different but the above reasons are why we do it and why we will continue to do it.

:thumbsup2:thumbsup2:thumbsup2 our experience as well! Best $94 we spent.

Same with EMH. Don't you only get early admission on the day of your throwaway reservation? Once you move off site, don't you lose that privilege?

Yes, but the PP says they saved $30 on parking. That's 2 days (your parking pass is good for check-in day and check-out day)

Same thing.

Earlier this month we visited the parks for 5 days, having booked a 1-day campsite at Fort Wilderness for about $60. We physically stayed off-site. We did the online check-in option a day before, never having set foot on the campsite.

For the purchase of the campsite we received:

-2 days of free parking for check-in and check-out day ($34 value)
-5 magic bands for our family ($64.75 plus tax)
-60 day FP+ booking window for the full length of our trip, not just the campsite days
-option to purchase a BOG FP+ lunch
-option to use EMH (we followed easyWDW touring plans, so we actively avoided EMH, but to each his own)

Honestly, I just don't get the argument that this is gaming the system or cheating. It's not even right to call this a loophole. All of these are the benefits available for booking an on-property campsite that I purchased. Is it really anyone's concern how I choose to use my campsite?

I understand the argument here is that this is preventing other people from "legitimately" using the campsite. But this implies that somehow I'm not "properly" using my campsite. Says who? You? What if I booked an ADR and chose to only purchase a milkshake? Are you mad at me for not ordering dinner? I'm sure there's someone else who wanted that ADR for a full dinner, but I got it before them. Why is that something I should be worried about?

Anyone who was turned away from a campsite because of capacity was welcome to plan as far ahead in advance as I did. Next time, if they get it before me, they are free to use it however they want. I don't have any reason to get upset at someone else for getting to it first.

All good points

Is it acceptable to do what you did and also cancel the campsite after 60 day window so those who worry about it being unavailable to others are considered?? Thoughts ??

Parking and the "discounted" magic bands were also consideration for us, which I believe would require keeping the campsite and not canceling.
