The start of summer/Memorial Day - I grew up in an area where we usually had nearly a full month of school after the Memorial Day holiday. So, May didn't feel like much, but the end of May in TX usually means the end of the school year. It's rare for us to have any form of classes after the holiday. So, the end of May signals the beginning of summer break.
My Bat Mitzvah - I was in an unusually large Bar/Bat Mitzvah class back in the day...to the extent that everyone had to double up and even some random holidays were handed out. As a result, mine ended up on Memorial Day. It was kind of a blessing (no pun intended) because the weekday meant no Haftorah (extra prayers I'd need to learn). It also meant the primary rabbi had a golf date and we got the much younger and fun assistant rabbi. For my parents, it meant cheaper prices for banquet facilities.
Travel Ball Starting Up - It's kind of bittersweet this year because I'm really enjoying the company of this year's school ball families. On top of that, I'm really hoping our girls win their next game so we can advance to the next round and keep the party going. Last night, I came up with a contraption involving a dinner bell and a pom pom that I'm really loving. In any event...as school ball winds down and teams get knocked out (or if your kid's team didn't make it at all), summer ball practices start and our first tournament is the very end of the month. Many of these families have been in our lives for a number of years now. In fact, I was reminded of that last night since the school we're facing in this round has something like 6 girls that DD has played or practiced with at various stages of travel ball with this specific org. So, May sort of signals a return to our travel ball family.
