Three Things...Gratitude Thread

1. Time: “Time flies when you’re having fun,” and it passes so slowly when things are not going well.

2. Travel: I wish I traveled more when I was younger, but I am grateful for the travel experiences I have had and for those that I will have in the future.

3. Tears: Tears come easily for me, tears of sorrow, empathy, happiness, love, and laughter…tears flow freely and feel cathartic.

Well, I’ve lived in Texas since April of 1997, so I’m going with Texas things. I probably also won’t stop at three.

Jobs- I moved here because the job market was more robust than Florida at the time when I was looking. It took about 4.5 months to land something decent but that’s still better than anything I was experiencing pre move. In fact, it was a contract work position my dad had here that had me looking at Texas in the first place.

Cost of living- This is really more Houston than the other Texas cities but it was so much cheaper here than the alternatives I was considering in NJ/NY and DC. It’s become more expensive, especially as homeowners subjected to the high taxation, but things like gas and groceries are still significantly cheaper than other states.

Food- I’m still a Jersey girl who misses all of the yummy goodness in the NY Metro area but between Tex Mex, true Mexican food, steaks, chili, barbecue, Louisiana crossover cuisine and even the significant German and Czech influences … well, we have phenomenal food.

Honorable mentions…
- A busy cruise port that’s an easy drive from home
- Tons of sports, from college to pro. It’s also nice that outdoor sports, like softball, can be a year round thing for us
- While I’m not a beach person, we do have them, and you can get pretty blue water if you’re willing to drive a bit to get away from the silt of the Mississippi
- While it’s a bit of a drive from our location, we’re only one state away from skiing (NM)
- We have two National Parks as well as a state park with a bison herd
- Bluebonnet and wildflower season, in general, is beautiful
- Blue Bell- OK, you know I’m not a real Texan because it’s not my favorite ice cream. Still, it makes so many people i know happy, so gratitude for their joy.
- Rodeo- Each year there is a massive, multi week, rodeo. It’s really not my thing but it does a lot of good for FFA kids as well as a wide variety of vendors. The concert lineup has not been to my liking in recent years, but it was really good in my early years and is so much more than country. Because of the rodeo, I’ve seen entertainment like Barry Manilow, Def Lepard, and Tony Bennett.

I’m sure there’s more but I won’t bore you 😊

T's

Trips to WDW and memories of reading, and even writing, trip reports.

TV: what can I say? We only have one, so we watch together.

Technology: if it wasn't for our online neighbor group on Messenger we wouldn't have had people offer to lend us their space heaters when we had no heat. And my DH found the solution to our problem online also.

T things...

Thanksgiving- it's my favorite holiday. Family, friends, big food, football- maybe they should call it Fanksgiving!

Tutus- I love ballet and for years was the costume mistress for my daughter's company. I love making beautiful things and making young dancers feel beautiful!

Travel- I travel as frequently as I can afford it, even if it's just to my sister's for a long weekend.

1. Fun socks- Disney socks!
2. Fun pajamas - Disney pjs!
3. Cute and fun dishes- add a little joy to my day cooking and eating with my Disney friends. Especially since I hate cooking as much as I hate winter. And I can't express my dislike for either of those 2 things clearly enough.

Good Monday Morning

#1 - MY DD’s PLAYROOM - It’s very fun and whimsical. Every wall is a different Disney color with Disney paint. It’s decorated with Disney things and my kids artwork that’s framed. We are empty nesters and this room is still the same - it’s like a time capsule of my girls childhood. I keep saying I should make this room into something functional, like an office, but I just can’t bring myself to do it.

#2 - FROZEN SING ALONG AT HS - This is a fun and whimsical show we love love love. The jokes keep us laughing the whole time. So fun and I can hardly wait to see it again. I could watch it twice in one trip - we think it’s great!

#3 - MY DISNEY STATUES - I have a lot throughout my house that many find very fun. Some may even say it makes my house whimsical. Not everyone has over 20 big figs throughout their house.

Race Costumes - While runDisney is the king in this category, fun costumes and accessories has been a thing at nearly everything I've ever run/walked. At DD's 10K this weekend, I saw people in all kinds of onesies...from Minions to bananas. There were also tons of tutus and glittery running skirts. Even the majors, like London, it's very common to see wild costumes. I'm contemplating a St. Patrick's Day themed half marathon next month and am already trying to figure out what I can wear to make it more whimsical.

Whimsical Lodging - There are some really cool hotels and rental properties out there. Don't get me wrong, I like a posh hotel or resort, but sometimes fun is really neat too. There's a place we stayed once in Denver called The Curtis where each floor has a theme...super heroes, video games, Star Wars, Simpsons, horror, etc. Even the elevators have themes and play all kinds of fun audio. Even the hotel restaurant had some fun menu items to add to the whimsy. I recall our girls getting lemonade topped with these massive balls of cotton candy. The irony is the restaurant was office themed...so, fun at work!

Wonderland on RCCL - Some of the Royal Caribbean ships have a whimsical upscale restaurant called Wonderland. You can see some of the fun food offerings on the link. https://www.royalcaribbean.com/cruise-dining/wonderland DH and I went for fun cocktails one evening. I had something involving cotton candy and he got something fun that had this whole smoke effect. They even have their own interpretation of the Mad Hatter.

Evening all,

1. WDW, Disney & Theme Parks in general - what could be more fun and whimsical than WDW or other Disney or theme parks in general?

2. Themed food & drinks - I love food and drinks that are Themed after films or characters and so cute and super instagrammable.

3. Immersive events - I've been to a few of these where you can get dressed up and live in a different world for an evening and they're so much fun. Stranger Things and Guardians of the Galaxy were a couple of faves!

1) My own mind, I like to pretend I am a Pac Man as I run over blips of missed snow in the middle of the road so it disappears
2) Comics who kindly share their funny observations, lately Leanne Morgan is making me laugh
3) All the creative people who got together to create Disney and Universal theme parks

1. As a Kindergarten teacher, I have to be fun and full of whimsy. It goes with the territory. I try to make things magical for them. We have a tiny Fairy door where our Elf, Jingle, enters and exits during December and a Leprechaun comes through on St. Patrick’s Day. Sometimes magic Fairy dust appears in the classroom randomly.

2. I love a theme whether it’s for a party in my personal life or a unit of study at school. I “scream the theme,” leaving no doubt in what we are learning or celebrating.

3. Bright cheerful colors in my classroom and in my home.

Fun/Whimsy
Giving my DGD space to explore her imagination without judgment

My DD and I love playing with words and are always on the lookout for a good pun or funny use of words, including quoting TV shows and movies.

Yesterday my DH happened to put on a youtube video featuring Bugs Bunny cartoons. Besides the memories it brought back, I really enjoyed the cartoon tropes, the music, plus the vocabulary which was quite advanced for something made for children.

Honorable mention: I don't know if there are any MST3K fans here, but I saw today that they are going to reunite for 4 new episodes!

Because Feb 1st was Texas Day, and yesterday was Groundhog Day, I postponed my usual new month subject, so we'll catch up today...

Today's Topic (Tuesday, 2/3) - 3 things you're grateful for about February

Good Morning!

#1 - VALENTINE’s DAY DINNER - I’m so grateful that I thought in January to make a reservation at White Castle for Valentine’s Day this year. The White Castles by us are reservation only - they have servers, make the tables all fancy - so fun! I can hardly wait!

#2 - ASH WEDNESDAY - i’m always grateful for the start of the Lenten season. I have to start thinking about what I’m going to give up for Lent this year. Every year, I say I’m going to give up peanut butter., and then at the last minute, I can’t do it. A priest I listen to always says that if you’re going to be crabby or act like a jerk because of something you gave up then please don’t give it up. I’m afraid that I would be crabby if I gave up peanut butter for Lent because it really is my one of favorite things, so I chicken out and not do it.

#3 - MY MIL’S BIRTHDAY - we are always grateful that she is here to have another birthday. She is turning 78 this year.

Afternoon all,

Not going to lie, I dislike February almost as much as I do January, so I don't have much to be grateful for! However:

1. It's a short month - I'm always glad February is a short month than all of the others, as it's definitely needed.

2. It's 1 month closer to spring - I'm always happy that February brings us closer to the start of spring, and it's taking us out of the winter months into something hopefully warmer 🤞

3. Time off work - our leave year at work runs from April to March, and it usually means that I have a lot of leave I need to use up before the end of March. A lot of this extra leave I tend to use in February for long weekends & days off, so I'm always grateful for the extra time off work.
