Three Things...Gratitude Thread

Today's Topic (Sat, 12/13) - 3 things you're grateful for having anything to do with horses

(Lots of things count - actual horses you've taken care of, books you've liked with horses in them, family traditions involving watching horse races...)

1. Black Beauty -- one of my all-time favorite books;
2. The way horses have helped farmers throughout America's history;
3. Being able to enjoy their majestic beauty -- the way they feel, the way they smell, their beautiful eyes -- one of God's most beautiful creations. I once had the privilege of spending a few private moments with one of the largest of the Budweiser Clydesdales. I will never forget how humbling it was.

13.... A baker's dozen of donuts or bagels from a downtown bakery, as a special holiday treat.

Horse things...

When I was 4 and 5, I rode a neighbor's show horse. IIRC (which I don't...) there was a show category where the rider had to be a child under a certain age, to show the horse's gentleness and training. For a couple of summers, that child was me.

After graduating from high school, my first stint at college was earning an associate's degree in large animal science. I used to love going in to clean out the horse stalls, groom and exercise the horses, etc. In one course, I even got to assist at foaling! Human or animal, I always stand in awe of the moment when we transition from there being 6 beings in a room to being 7.

The summer I was 18, my boyfriend and I and another couple went camping on Prince Edward Island for a week. It was such an amazing trip! There was a horse farm there (Fuddleduddle Farms, maybe... it WAS 1974 so my memory might not be accurate) where they let us rent horses for $2 a day and we rode all over the island. After returning the horses on the first day, we told the owner how the horses kept trying to go into the ocean, but we didn't let them. He said "go for it" and just hold on... so the next day, we did. I didn't know horses could swim (or that the owners wouldn't mind the leather saddles and such being exposed to salt water). It was pretty amazing!

Happy Saturday Everyone :wave:

#1 - HEARTLAND - One of our favorite TV shows. I highly recommend it to everyone. You don’t have to be a horse person to love this show.

#2 - THE HEADLESS HORSEMAN - I’m speaking of who appears before the Boo To You parade at WDW. He is so cool and eerie at the same time.

#3 - CARRIAGE RIDES - There’s lots of debates about these, and because of this, they are no longer available in downtown Chicago. Back when they were there, my DH took many carriage rides before and after we were married. We’d also take our girls on their birthday. We have lots of wonderful memories with taking carriage rides around the city.

Evening all,

Difficult one for me today, as I like horses but struggling to think of anything particularly poignant!

1. Mounted Unit - at my work we have a mounted unit whose contracts are some of the many I look after. And I tend to always use this as an excuse to have meetings in person so I can visit with the horses afterwards. Animals at work always make me happy.

2. Horses while out walking - I'm fortunate enough to live near a lot of scenic walks, a lot of which often have stables or fields with horses grazing, and I always love seeing them. Even better when they're friendly and come say hello.

3. Work Friend - whenever I think of horses, I think of a close work colleague and friend who has 2 horses. She's a really good friend and is coming with me on my next trip to WDW, which should be fun!
