Three Things...Gratitude Thread

Another vote for SIRIUS XM - I'd never had it before I got my new car in May, but I've really enjoyed it! (And thanks to advice from here on the DISboards, I waited until the second letter came with the better offer to extend the free trial.) I've been listening the most to a Beatles station, Radio Margaritaville, and Y2Kountry.

Music in the car in general - I generally concentrate better with background noise than silence, so I've always listened to music in the car, whether on the radio or various media as it evolved. - I've had cars with a cassette player, a CD player, and my current one can even play music (or podcasts or audiobooks) through my phone. Back in the cassette days, I spent many hours crafting the perfect road trip playlists!

Sitting by the radio as a kid, listening to the list of schools to see if we had a snow day!

I also made mix tapes :)

Dodger games with Vin Scully on the radio were a childhood soundtrack for sure.

Radio stations like 102.7 KIIS FM and AM Los Angeles yes with Rick Dees was often played on school bus rides. I rode the bus for my first year in high school and then as needed the other two years.

I never won but the days when stations had almost daily call in contests.

Another vote for mix tapes recorded from the radio. I finally got rid of mine in our last move. Cassette players just never seem to last, at least the way they're made today, so I've only retained some things that I may one day convert to digital.

News/weather in emergency situations is my next one. From 9/11 coverage to storm issues, I'm grateful for times when local radio has switched over to more critical issues.

Weekly countdowns were always fun back when I was a kid in the 80s. It was a time to see how your faves were doing as well as hear a few new things making their marks.

Love listening to the radio

I remember as a kid listening to the radio and making cassette tapes off songs from the radio ❤️ showing my age here
I e
I would like to try to see if I can beat the rate I had the previous year🤣🤣🤣🤣
1980 an artist... Christopher Cross..was all over the radio...so I made a cassette tape to send to a missionary friend in central America.... looking like cassette tapes the only way to beat the rates

I won a John Madden ride on his bus and outback dinner and baseball game on one call

....and yes Scully was such a wonderful sound... thought I would spend the rest of my summers listening

Yearly countdown 1974 ... high school/university ... sent away for the list..came printed on gold cardstock... still have it in one of the boxes underneath the cassette tapes

Evening everyone!

I'll be in the minority here but I absolutely hate listening to the radio. The stations over here are just rubbish, from constantly playing ads to naff chatter, to repeating the same songs every few hours. They drive me crazy :headache:

1. Radio mix tapes - another vote for this. I have fond memories of listening to the top 40 chart every Sunday and trying to tape my favourites.

2. Music in the car - agree with PollyannaMom on this one. I couldn't drive in silence, I always need to have (fairly loud) music on to help me destress or relax. The change in media over the years from tapes to CDs, iPods and now being able to play Spotify over AndroidAuto is definitely quite fun to reminisce over.

3. Genre specific radio stations - like i said, I dont like listening to the radio but one of the stations in the UK has lots of different genre specific stations like 80s, 90s, 00s and even Xmas. So when I do have to listen to the radio, I would always turn to these!

4. DH- we worked through college as DJ:s and radio host on local radio station way out in the boonies - with music on cassette tapes! That was a LONG time ago!!!
Going to help redefine boonies... check out goldfield Nevada radio station... depends more on Internet for it has a range on car radio north 30 miles and south...well you have to climb the grave.. whoops grade before the station surface on radio... have not been to any living ghost town of merit but in my history.. goldfield Nevada is a true living ghost town

Our local radio station was AM only. It folded a couple of years after we left. Our town is becoming a ghost town.

I have a long history of listening to the radio. My first love was my transistor radio which went everywhere with me, from bike rides to listening to it late at night under my pillow to baseball and hockey games; sometimes getting stations from very far away. (Like Montreal, listening to hockey in French and trying to guess what was going on)

I won a few contests on the radio. I remember winning tickets to see the movie Jaws and was too scared to go see it, so I gave them to the principal of the school where I was teaching!

Hours spent making mixed tapes which I still have. Beatles from A-Z, yearly countdowns, themed tapes for road trips…

And I still listen. Mostly my local public radio station, especially on the weekends. (love the show Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me and have seen it in person)

my aunt I miss her so much❤️ I have so many fun memories of her she always had projects planned for us when she babysit me and my sister which was a lot - safari is in her yard she would pack us these little lunches and we will go on safari and her big huge yard it was such great fun she would take us to the mobile library so we can get books she would always have a craft for us to do she taught us to cook she taught us how to climb cabinets see my aunt was handicapped so she told us how to climb up on her cabinet so we could grab things for her I loved her so much she passed away way too young - most of my family did not live in the state i grew up in I had this one aunt and one other aunt so I had one on my father side which is this one and one on my mother side I was much closer to the one on my father side she spent a lot more time with me and my sister I was always so very sad that she died right before I had any kids she would’ve been an awesome great aunt

A coworker she was about 20 years older than me and she was like a second mom to me we were friends for over 30 years even after we were no longer working together we still talked every week and we went to lunch every month I so miss hearing her stories she was a kindness nicest person I’ve ever known

My neighbors were an older couple and their mother came to live with them and she would always sit outside in her rocking chair and I thought she looks so lonely so I decided one day I would go to start talking to her I was just a kid I was only in maybe junior high school so I went down there and I started talking to her in the stories she told me were fascinating She told me stories about when she was a kid and they didn’t have cars back then they had horses and buggies she told me stories about when she was a kid she told me stories about her life it was just so wonderful hearing all of her stories we became great friends I was really sad when she passed away but I was really glad that I had a chance to meet her and get to know her

See I didn’t get to know my grandmother she lives halfway across the country so I never got to go see her and get to know her so I had to substitute other people that live by me so I often found other older people to fill-in often times I would have a friend in her grandmother would be my grandmother and when my kids had friends that had situations or one of their parents was absent or perhaps a bad situation I’ve always extended my house to them because I understand that situation very well and wanted them to know that they had a safe place that they are always welcome to come to my house or to call if they ever need to talk often times several I’ve taken me up on this offer some still now is there in their 20s and some in their 30s I’d like to extend what was given to me to others

My first true voice teacher - I was 12, she was something like 72 or 73, and I was the only child she'd ever bring in as a pupil. She was tough and known to make adults cry, but we worked well together and her impact on my life was immeasurable.

My neighbors down the shore - We had the most amazing next door neighbors at our summer house. It was like having the Italian grandparents I'd always wanted. I grew up in a predominantly Italian town and often got spend time with friends' nonnas, so these people were sort of like my surrogate set.

DH's grandmother - She lived until she was nearly 104 and both of my girls got to know her. You just can't fabricate the experience of kids getting to meet living people from much earlier generations. My last living grandparent died just before DD16 was born and only met DD18 as an infant, and after she'd suffered a massive stroke. So, this was really special for us and the girls.

Afternoon everyone!

1. My mum - I don't have a lot of family but my mum really helps me out a lot, especially when I want to go on holiday!

2. My grandparents - on my mum's side who are no longer with us, but they were so generous and fun and I have so many fond memories of the time we spent together.

3. Work colleagues - my work colleagues vary a lot in age and I get only really well with some of the older ones, to the point that I see and talk to them more than my actual friends outside of work
