Three Things...Gratitude Thread

Has anyone read the book
Hotel Rwanda by Paul Rusesabagina or had the pleasure of hearing him speak in person when he toured the US?
It was an extremely moving experience and this man’s story dud not end here - he’s had endured further by speaking out against what is going on in his homeland - he was kidnapped and put in prison for 25 years and was released after two years from others helping to set him free from the injustice he received - another example of an inspiring person
I did get to hear him speak along with about 100 others and you could have heard a pin drop it was a moving experience - he personally spoke to everyone there and not just a hi and move along - he spoke to you as he signed his book - he’s a very caring soul

My grandmother, who kept herself young by helping others. I admired her creativity and benefited from her patience!

My DS, for his kindness and generosity. He reminds me often of my mom, even though he never got to meet her.

My aunt M---, who sets a great example of confidence and independence, and who I've always looked up to.

1. "Not my circus, not my monkeys." Helps me to let go of things that I really don't have a part in. I might have an opinion, but it's really not my business, nor does it affect my life.

2. Don't ask a question if you aren't ready to hear the answer- because how do you handle it when the answer isn't what you were hoping to hear?

3. Let it be.

Good Morning from a place that had the worst air quality in the world yesterday - something not to be grateful for :sad2:

I’ve received so much great advice throughout my life from so many awesome people. I’m grateful for all of it. These are the first things that came to mind….

#1 - I’m grateful for my grandpa (RIP) always advising me to never walk with my hands in my pockets when we’d go for our Sunday walk - there‘s been many times that I’d stumble on a crack in the sidewalk, slip on ice and etc and I’d think about how it was good my hands weren’t in my pockets - I did hound my girls about this too.

#2 - I’m grateful for the same grandpa (RIP) always advising to say a good strong ”good morning” to people on that same walk - I still do this now and sometimes people look at me like I’m nuts for speaking to them and some people light up, smile and return the good morning when I speak to them. This is another thing I passed along to my girls.

#3 - I’m grateful for all the advice I’ve received from different priests throughout my life - to much to narrow down.

Love the idea of quotes/advice. Three that stick with me.

“Be responsible for the energy you bring into a room”. That’s from a leadership course I recently finished.

“When you can, leave negative people out of your life.” That one actually came from Tony Orlando one time I met him. He was very encouraging and wonderful. His point was that there is always negative things happening and we’ll have plenty of opportunities at getting good at handling it, but don’t surround yourself with people who are always trying to find the negative in things.

General…think outside the box. Challenge yourself to find new and better ways to accomplish anything.

"The business of life is the acquisition of memories." - This one came from Carson on Downton Abbey, and I have it framed next to one of my favorite vacation photos of DS.

“The little things are infinitely the most important.” - Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (I looked up who was actually credited with this quote, but I learned it from my Mom. )

"Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light." - Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore

For me, a verse of Scripture that is most meaningful is, Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths. (Proverbs 3:5-6) I pray to do just that always and serve with joy.

My beloved late Grandpa Sam always reminding me through how he lived his life the importance of choosing to do the kind thing.

To go with the above, Jewel's lyrics in her songs, "Hands," of "in the end all only kindness matters."

"The bad news is time flies. The good news is you're the pilot."
Michael Altshuler

"Not having the best situation, but seeing the best in your situation is the key to happiness."
Marie Forleo

"The simple act of listening to someone and making them feel as if they have truly been heard is a most treasured gift."
L. A. Villafane

Inspirational People:
1. John McCain—I was always inspired by his courage and bravery as a prisoner of war. He was brutalized, but survived and dedicated himself to a lifetime of service to the country.
2. Mother Teresa—she gave her whole life to caring for the poor and the sick. The selflessness is amazing.
3. Elizabeth Smart—survived her kidnapping and being held for almost a year. She was a child and managed to keep herself alive. Since then she has tried to help others.

Advice:
1. Don’t worry about the day you never saw. That came from my dad although he probably didn’t think of it himself. I am a worrier by nature and I often repeat that to myself.
2. The Serenity Prayer—I say that one (or sometimes parts of it) to myself a lot too.
3. No is a complete sentence. I need to follow this one more than I do.

I have zero photos from my childhood ( long story family drama ) but I do have two very old albums from my grandmother from her teen years and when she first got married to my grandfather ❤️❤️ she died shortly after so I really treasure these photos
Photos of my two kids when they were born - I was told I may never be able to have children so I was very blessed to be able to do it twice
My pets through the years - I treasure all the photos I have of all my pets I’ve had over the last 40 years - I think I took as many of them as I did my kids 🤣🤣❤️❤️
