Grateful to the 1940s for:

the microwave oven
Tupperware
my parents being born

Omg I think I was born in wrong decade I love things from 40s

Clothes - the dresses Zoot Suits

Music - swing - Glen Miller / Andrew Sisters / Bing Crosby - I could go on and on - listen to it all the time

Women - given the chance to do what men were doing - it didn’t last long but it opened the door to show women could do more than keep house

Space Program - a lot of it was started in the 40s

Subdivision - came about after the war - housing for all the veterans and their families

Movies - some of the best movies are from that decade - great actors we don’t get them like that anymore - one of my favorite Casablanca - such a great movie - so many lines in that movie you can quote !! Disney was starting to make cartoon movies !!

History - i love reading about WW2 - i can’t comprehend how the Nazis did what they did - I watch specials on tv / read books / historical fiction novel / all kinds of novels about brave men & women who fought against the Nazis - how most of Germany was on meth - that’s how their troops moved so lighting fast - they were taking meth !! At that time Germany was leader in making medicine for the world - no one knew then how bad meth was but found out real quick but by then it was too late they were in too deep - very interesting book about it !

I really wish this was taught more in school so history maybe would not repeat itself as it’s all tied together - very interesting special how the Nazis went to the Middle East and their head troop leader started troops over there - and that’s how we got Isis & all that - it goes all the way back to the 40s! So interesting how these things are all tied together -

My opinion - I just think that was an amazing brave generous who sacrificed a lot and fought two WW wars and then communism - food shortages / clothing shortages - destruction - dearth - brave hard people ! Coming out of a great world wide depression right before this - these are amazing people ! Sadly not too many still around to tell us their stories but if you have one - please chat with them - they have some great history that we will hopefully never have to deal with again but it’s very interesting to hear about !!

Definitely the end of WWII and the incredible efforts, persistence and sacrifices of all who died and all who lived through it.

On a very different note, Slinky was, apparently , invented in the 40s. Loved mine! (The plastic ones aren't as good.)

And another simple pleasure, the frisbee. Anyone fancy a game?

I loved your whole post, but it was especially nice to see you mentioned Glenn, too.

I always reply before I read everyone's posts and it's interesting to see where we coincide and what I didn't think of but appreciate alongside you all - like the changed perspective of/about women after the war - and microwaves - and early Disney animations.

It is a whirlwind trip. Drive down from VA on a Tuesday and home on the Friday! Staying at the YC CL which is my favorite. Somehow I managed to get a private EPCOT fireworks cruise at only 3 weeks out! And finally,, we were gifted AMAZING tickets by a DIS friend. It restored my faith in mankind HA HA! I've definitely made some incredible friends on here - you ladies included!!

YC CL? Awesome. Will there be photos?

And a fireworks cruise! ENJOY!

Yacht Club is a lovely hotel !! I own at BC it’s a sister to YC ( like step sister ) Yacht is really nice and centrally located walk right to EOCOT or MGM or take a boat - very nice !! You’re gonna have amazing weather May is really nice !! Plus Flower & Garden EPCOT will have food booths too !!

I stayed YC CL one night in Feb. Most relaxing two days I recall in ages (maximized both in and out days).

DH and I and many many friends are people born in the ‘40’s. Most of us are baby Boomers.

Dad returned from WWII…thankfully it ended then.

UN great answer - I just finished reading a book about the early days of the UN very interesting !!!

Israeli another excellent answer - the history of how the Jewish people are taken care of after the War not so great / my opinion - trying to get to Israel was not as easy as many think nor was it wanted or welcomed so very sad for people who had already suffered beyond measure

Such amazing history from this decade in time - I just love history and this and the 30s is a time period I never tire of reading about ! It’s all tied together from before WW1 right up to now ! You can just trace it - I find that so interesting and amazing ! How something that happened decades ago impacts things happening now !
