Just got back from a three and a half day trip to WDW. We live two hours south so we make short trips. This time we arrived Thursday Apr. 27th and left this morning (Apr 30) after breakfast.

note: I am not in any of the pictures, I'm the photographer. We did get some good PhotoPass pictures of all of us though.

Day One:

I’ll get the hot topics out of the way first- Weather was perfect. Sunny and warm without being hot and cool in the mornings and evenings. Pool temp – Cold. If that pool was heated I’d be shocked. We didn’t go to the main pool, maybe that one was warmer. No cheerleader groups in our hotel (POR) or anywhere else. Many school groups in the parks but not in our hotel either.

Day one.

We planned to be on the road by 7:30 and by some miracle we actually were. Drove north on the FL turnpike to Oceola Pkwy and pulled in to Port Orleans, Riverside 2 hours and 6 minutes later. Check in went smoothly but for the fact that the rooms we got were pretty much the exact opposite of what we requested. The only good that could be said was they weren’t too far from things. We were in Oak Manor, facing the parking lot. Had someone said, “Here, mark on the map where you don’t want to be.” Those were the rooms I’d have picked. However, as it turned out they were just fine. To those worried about the size of this place and being too far away, don’t be. This place is laid out in such a way that even buildings that look super far away on the map aren’t.

Back to the report. So we got checked in and left our bags and then hopped on a bus over to Epcot. We didn’t have much planned for this day. Just to see some of the flower show and have lunch. We knew Soarin’ was going to be a lost cause since we were getting there so late. Last time we were at Epcot it was in early December. A lady with a stroller was using it like a weapon and after about the tenth time she smashed it into my mother my mother (who is actually a very mild mannered person) snapped at her and told her to back off (or words to that effect.) So as we walked up we reminded each other that we were at the happiest place on earth and no matter how obnoxious anyone might be we would rise above it. Remember that, it will come back to haunt me later.

The flowers right from the moment you approach the entrance are fantastic and we were oohing and ahhing and snapping photos straight away and I never stopped. Oh, hang on a sec, here’s a bit of info about entering the park that some might find interesting. Back in December I bought a Fl. Seasonal Pass. My mother and sister bought 3-day play tickets. They each had one day left on those tickets and were going to upgrade them to Seasonal Passes. We weren’t sure how that worked or what it was going to cost. Turns out they each paid $101.00 and their passes are good until next April! Fantastic deal.

Back on track again (we aren’t even in the park and I can’t stay on topic. This doesn’t bode well. I was a computer Science major. We didn’t have to write much.) I actually made notes (there’s the science major coming out) and it was 11:15 when we got to the park info board (or whatever it’s called) and it turns out that there are fast passes for Soarin’! I grab all our passes and book over there to grab three. At the fast pass distribution I was about to slide the first ticket in to get a FP when a woman said to me, “We have two for right now if you guys want them, we can’t use them.” Hmm, ‘you guys’? I look behind me and sure enough there is a man standing there getting tickets for his group too. We looked at each other for a sec and I suppose he was thinking the same thing I was, “How would my family ever know if I snuck in a ride with this perfect stranger???” But we took the high road and admitted we weren’t together and they went off to offer their FPs to someone else. At 11:20 I got fast pass return for 1:54! Excellent! It fit right in with our plan to head over to Morocco for lunch.

We checked out some flowers and caught the boat to Morocco. Along with a big group of kids from a school in Plantation FL. They were loud and boisterous and very polite. School groups would be a recurring theme of the trip. They were everywhere in the parks and most were fantastic.
We grabbed lunch at the Tangerine Café (2 chicken sawaras, 1 lamb sawara, 3 sodas, $13.00 each for a total of $39.00) and then wandered back towards the land pavilion while checking out the gardens. The perfume garden in France was really clever and we loved that. There was an adorable topiary of Piglet and Eyore in England and in the garden there was Mary Poppins! Our first character of the trip. The great thing about traveling without kids is that you don’t have to wait in line for character pics. You just take a pic with any kid. They are all adorable so it works out perfectly. Just remember that’s what you did and maybe make a note of it in your memory book, so down the road when you’re asked “Who is that child?” you can just make something up and don’t go crazy thinking it’s one you ought to know.

Then it was off to ride Soarin’. In Dec. my sister and I rode this and my mom waited outside. She didn’t want any part of it. Well, we told her how gentle it was and how much she’d love it so she decided to ride it this time. Big mistake. She was terrified and we felt awful. She said she had her eyes closed most of the time but still I felt bad that we told her she’d love it and she was scared. We made adjustments to the plans for the next few days to make sure there was nothing remotely scary for her after that! We headed back to POR and went to find our rooms, which were fine. I don’t care for the Magnolia Bend section because I don’t like that style of Pseudo Tara architecture but it grew on me. Mostly because the grounds were so lovely. My mother and sister really loved it and requested we change our Christmas reservations from CSR to POR.

After a bit of a rest we took a cab over to the Poly ($10.75 plus tip) for dinner at the Kona Café. Best meal of the trip. I’ll post details in a dining thread with pictures. The only thing is, why are all restaurants at WDW so loud? There is no soundproofing so they all sound like school cafeterias with no lunch monitor on duty. It’s my goal to find a few quiet ones next trip.
Our after dinner plan was to take the monorail over to MK and see Spectromagic and Wishes. We were done in though. We did go over and we rode the train all the way around and then headed for the bus stop and back to POR. It was a great day (other than scaring my mother!)

Day 2

Awake at my usual time of 5:30. I wish I could sleep in but it’s best to stay to my normal work time I suppose. In any case it’s a lovely morning to take a stroll over to the food court to pick up breakfast. People were out jogging. I figure I’m up before dawn and that’s sacrifice enough. Oh, and by the way, I have a tender spot on my foot from the nubbies inside my Crocs! I’m somewhat miffed by this. No time to be cranky though, I hover until six and purchase a couple of croissants, a muffin and some OJ and make my way back to the room. By now my sister is stirring. We have plans to get to MK by 8:30 at the latest. I have a plan and we are going to follow it. (Buzz, HM and Splash have been crossed off due to yesterday’s unfortunate Soarin’ incident.)

We get ready and have something to eat. My mom begins stirring in her room and soon joins us and we congratulate ourselves on our early start. We head on over to the bus stop and a bus for MK is waiting. It’s kismet! As we are pulling away from POR my mother says,

“You know what?”
Me: “What?”
Mom: “I forgot to take my medicine.”
Sis and I share a look. “We’ll just go right back to the hotel as soon as we get to the park.”

My mother felt terrible because she knew we had a plan but we reassured her that we had plenty of time and not to worry. We get to the park and it turns out the driver isn’t going back to POR but she tells us to wait. She calls in and they tell her to take us back. So we rode all the way back by ourselves. As far as I am concerned that was as much pixie dust as an upgrade to a deluxe. I waited at the bus stop while they went back to the room. And waited. And waited. Through four MK buses. They got lost but even with all that we got to the park by 9:15. We rode everything on our plan, walked on to everything, and had a fantastic time. We rode/saw –Jungle Cruise, Pirates, Pooh, Peter Pan, Small World, Hall of Presidents, Philarmagic, TTA. The only line we waited in all day was for lunch at Pecos Bill’s.

This was the first time at MK for my mom and myself and we loved it. It was the best day of our trip and we can’t wait to go back. It was just a perfect Disney Day. Even if it did take us two tries to get there.

We were back at POR early again and had time to relax a bit before cabbing over to AKL. This was a $17.00 ride. This guy’s meter seemed to be turning a lot faster than the one the night before but whatever. Tonight it was dinner at Boma. We got there early so we could have a look around. We did this the night before the the Poly also and it worked out well. These are both hotels we’ve been thinking of staying in and both got crossed off our list as a result of these visits. Anyway, at AKL we had a wait for dinner since we were early. Our refreshment radar was working properly however because we ended up in the bar where I refrained from ordering my new favourite vacation drink, a Lava Colada. I wanted to save room for dinner. We had a short wait (long enough for one drink, not long enough to get anxious) and were seated. The food was good but again, the atmosphere was awful. This is what got AKL crossed off the future stay list. My mother said she never wanted to see Boma again even if she didn’t have to eat there. Though she said the roast beef was among the best she’s ever had. And this is a woman with an excellent palate who has eaten in some of the finest restaurants.

From AKL we took the bus to Downtown Disney. I wanted to shop in the World of Disney and we could get a boat from there to POR. Friday Night. You could hardly move for the crowds. We gave up and headed back to POR on the boat. This was our first trip on one of these boats and I must say it was a nerve wracking experience. The boats all seem to have a major list. I was terrified the thing was going to turn over. We found out later that they all list and that it’s a lot less scary in the daylight. I came to enjoy the boats a lot, just be prepared that they lean.

Day Three:

Up early again and we grabbed breakfast in the food court before heading off to AK. This was our worst day in a park. A ton of high school (and other school group) kids were there and while they were certainly not badly behaved in any way the park was mobbed. We went straight back and rode the safari (a nice group of animals were out, tons of elephants especially) and then did the trek. All of that was enjoyable and not crowded. We headed over to Asia and the paths were mobbed. We ducked in to see Flights of wonder which we enjoyed very much. Have you seen this? You should. One thing I found fascinating was the Bald Eagle and the reaction of the audience to it. The day before at Hall of Presidents people enjoyed it but I didn’t get any sense of patriotism from it. That bird came out though and it was palpable in the audience. Not just because it was large and very beautiful. There were other large and beautiful birds. But because this was The Bird. I don’t know why it is but to citizens of the US that bird is so very special. I digress. Sorry.

We left there and took the trail to see the Asian animals. It was feeding time for the tigers and tons of them were out as well as many other animals. The trail was quite crowded though. When we exited it was just packed and very hard to move. The bridge to Dinoland was closed and we had to go all the way back to try and get to see FOTLK. We missed it and by then the crowds were overwhelming. You couldn’t move at all and I was getting worried my mother would be knocked down. We decided to call it a day and headed for the exit. Here’s where I had my “I lost it at Disney World” moment.

The paths were very crowded so we went through the cave to the bridge to exit. As I approached the bridge a man of about 40 was coming the other way and purposely making it sway. I thought to myself, “Jerk.” But let it pass and waited for him to be gone and the bridge to stop before going across with my sister and mother behind me. I turned to check on my mother’s progress in time to see a big hefty guy of about 35 jump on the bridge behind my mother and then start jumping and pushing to make the bridge sway. I saw red. I got right up in his face and screamed at him (I never raise my voice, really) I said, “My mother is eighty! Knock it off!” He did stop. He didn’t apologize, he just said, “Oh, I didn’t see her.” I held my tongue but I wanted to say, “Oh, so you just leap ahead anyway then without looking? You could have knocked her down, if a small child had been on that bridge you would have knocked him down. Grow up.” But I didn’t. I was steamed though.
Definitely time to head back to POR before I get kicked out.

We hit the pool for a while and then my sister and I took the boat to DTD which we enjoyed very much this time and I got some stuff to make a scrapbook. We were supposed to have dinner at Raglan Road but the night before we decided to change our reservations and just eat at the hotel. Mom was getting tired and so were we. Dinner at Boatwright’s was nothing to write home about but it was easy and we got to bed early.

Next morning (this morning!) we got a slow start. Had breakfast at Boatwright’s and then got in the car (which has a grand total of 536 miles on the odometer even after a round trip to WDW!) and headed home.

Best part- Magic Kingdom!
Worst- Losing it at AK.

PS: All those school kids in the parks and it was the grownups behaving badly. :sad2:

Well good to know the kids from Plantation (where I live) were behaving well.

Great trip report. Sounds like lots of fun. I have 4 trips planned from May till Dec 1st.

HUGS!

Enjoyed reading your report ~ Thanx for sharing.

Thankyou for the report, wanted to tell you how professional I thought your photos were, simply beautiful,
Claire xx

Sounds like you had a nice trip, despite running into guest behaving badly. I took a cab from the POFQ to the AKL once, and I was surprised by how fast that added it! It sure is an expensive cab ride.

Thanks for posting.

Thanks so much for your compliment to my lovely mother :-)

I'm ashamed to say that I've lived here for a long time, I just never went to WDW. Combination of illness and budget. Both got resolved somewhat in recent years so last fall I made a resolution to go and to go often. To be sure I bought an AP before I'd ever even been! We did Epcot last Dec., I went to MGM and AK with friends in January and this trip we did Epcot, MK and AK. We've already got plans for Sept. and Dec. '06 and my mom and sister bought APs too!
