Not an original idea or anything, but what do you think of the conversion?

I think it would work better with a little color in their skin and hats plus tone down the outfits to make it look more old-timey. Looks like a nice job however in getting clean lines with the colorized bits.

I like version 2 a bit better, not because of the skin but because of the desaturated colors on the costumes. I just feel it fits the overall theme better. Maybe try version 2 with skin decolorized, like version 2b.

I used the original photo and then just used nik Color Efex Pro filter - Old Photo Color on it and then cut the opacity a bit because it was a bit too much.

I like version 2 the best but you could saturate just a little bit more. However, I think the colors are too bright in the other ones.

Also, unrelated to the people in the shot, the highlights in the brick on the bottom right seem a little harsh, if you could darker it up a bit, I think it would work much better.

I used one of my favorite filters (Old Photo Color) from my favorite set of plug-in filters for PS - nik Color Efex Pro. You can download a full demo set here:

I used the 4th option in the pull-down for the filter, reduced the grain by quite a bit, and then after filling a new layer, it was still a bit strong so I reduced the opacity of the layer to about 50-60 percent. I like that you can set it to keep what you did as a separate layer so you can do multiple effects using one basic image plus you always have the original to go back to if you change your mind.

i like version 3 coloration but the grain Sharon put in hers added, imo the grain adds that old time flavor but i agree with wmcricket mostly

the grain that Sharon added is a nice touch, maybe even a little (very light) sepia wash would be cool - very old looking! That's a great photo to play with!

I was also going to suggest sepia for the background, the plain black and white is a little sterile.

I think that selective coloring is an effect that is very difficult to pull off in a very satisifying way, where it's better than the same photo in all color or all b/w, but that's just my opinion.
