It was a very different cruise, I would even say weird in some aspects.

If I separated it into to parts - the on board experience and the experience of the two days at Castaway Cay...I would say the Castaway experience was a significant upgrade, while the on board experience was downgraded. That's the headline IMO.

Since our entire family (myself, wife, 19-yr old son, 16-yr old daughter) is fully vaccinated, the arrival at port and embarkation process, while different, went smoothly.

On board, the lack of activities really stood out. Perhaps that is why there was no paper Navigator, as it would have been mostly blank. The few activities they did have were repeated over and over, presumably to give multiple opportunities for them so that each occurrence wasn't too heavily attended. The movie theater only showed Black Widow and Jungle Cruise, and nothing else (normally, Cruella would probably have been part of the rotation). In the adult lounge for the four nights, they had karaoke twice and Match Your Mate twice. No variety acts. They did the same music trivia (80s, 90s, 2000s,) 3 or 4 times a day in 687.

Since we were traveling with a 19-yr old, it would have been nice to know beforehand that the 1820 Society was canceled (but of course, it was still advertised on the screens in the elevators). This was a big disappointment. As a result, our son just spent a majority of the cruise in the stateroom. Had we known in advance there would be no 1820 Society, there would have been a good chance we would have canceled and rescheduled.

Another thing they should have notified guests prior to sailing was that guest laundry rooms would be closed. First night, I went to iron a shirt and another gentleman was heading towards me with his shirt and knew where I was heading. He stopped and said "the laundry rooms are closed, I guess there will be a lot of guys in wrinkled shirts at dinner on this cruise". Not a huge deal in and of itself, but goes back to the lack of communication from DCL that we have seen throughout this ordeal, and in particular the last 6 weeks or so where they left guests booked on these Aug Dream sailings twisting in the wind for so long. Once they finally announced they were resuming operations with this sailing, they should have been very transparent and specific about what changes to the on board experience we should expect.

The overall reduced capacity (there's been plenty of numbers tossed around - 25%, 30%, etc) is certainly what made the days at Castaway truly fantastic. There were far fewer loungers/chairs on the beach, and spread out well. Still, there was no problem finding any. There were so few people on the beach, in the water, etc. that you really felt like it was "private island ". This was the first day, early afternoon, with good weather (second day had bad weather) ...

On the flip side, the reduced capacity made for some weird aspects. Our room was near the aft elevators. When we got off the forward elevators and had to make the long walk down the hall, very few doors were decorated, and of course, no FEs hanging. You even saw less CMs. Was very strange.

Another strange sight was the atrium completely empty in the evening. The below pic was about 7:30 pm when it is normally buzzing with activity (live music, characters greets, backdrop photos, etc)

As expected, the crew were all fantastic. Food was excellent (although, they could have used the time off to refresh the menus). I think the fact that they only had to make dinners for about 30% of the usual number of people allowed them to improve the quality and preparation of the dinners in the MDRs.

Debarkation was okay. Line to get off the ship was still fairly long - and not physically distanced. I guess they didn't care if everyone infected each other on that line and got sick 2-3 days later since we'd be long gone from the ship at that point.

And a PSA if I may,...please make sure you are taking the correct luggage from the terminal. For the second time, we had someone take one of our bags/suitcases. And strangely, neither time was it a black upright suitcase. Fortunately, they got in touch with the people who took it and they were on a DCL bus back to MCO, so they alerted the driver and he left it with the DCL folks at the Magical Express area and we were able to get it when we got to MCO.

Thanks for sharing. I wonder why they don't use a virtual queue to debark at PC like they do at CC? Would it really cost them any more?

Great insight, thanks for sharing. At present we're booked for an early October cruise. The possibility of an additional stop at CC is exciting. I am pretty cautious about getting off at Nassau with 2 (unvaccinated) littles in tow. It sounds like it might be long days if to stay on ship.

Thank you so much for sharing! This is all great info!

So bizarre...I wouldn't think the laundry would be a source of transmission. On our cruises, I've never run into more than 1 person in those rooms, and usually I'm the only one in there.

Fully agree that they aren't as concerned at this point in the cruise. Look at WDW and that level of crowding is what Disney is good with. I'm personally ok with it, but many may not be.

Not your problem but now I'm left with the curiosity of how the people on the bus who took your luggage got theirs? I wonder if they had to go back to the port!?

We did brunch, which was still fabulous, albeit a slightbnotch below without the buffet portion.
Ugh. Thanks for confirming. Brunch is literally the one thing we are looking forward to the most.

Can you describe a little bit more about the new experience? Did they limit how many of the “antipasti” seafood appetizers you can order? We’re there other items that used to be on the buffet that you can now order from a menu?

We do not eat seafood, so can't speak to that. We got one of the regular antipasti. I would characterize it as a plate for two (there were 3 of us). Didn't seem like there were any limits on what you could order, however, we didn't attempt to order multiples of any one item. We don't want to eat too much of one item, as tempting as it is You could order some of the pastry items (sticky buns, almond croissant, etc) that were normally on the buffet. We ordered pizza, a calzone, eggs Benedict, a frittata, the chicken Parm, lasagna, and eggplant rollatini among other things.

Did you say the had the warm sticky buns!?

Thanks for sharing. On the luggage front, how did they know who took it by mistake?

The luggage tag on the suitcase (same exact brand/model/color as ours - which is not a common one) that was left behind in the terminal.

The phone number on the tag was no longer valid, but the DCL CM took the name from the tag, looked up their reservation and got a contact number. She called it, and reached them on the motorcoach to MCO.

I get that totally, confined space. The laundry was always in full use on our cruise on the Magic.

People should get a credit for this reduced experience, sounds like a budget cruise and not a Disney one. Hope things improve before our Nov sailing or we will defiantly cancel.

Can you describe the turn out in the teen clubs?

According to our daughter, Vibe had a pretty good turnout the first night. Then, as is usually the case, several groups/cliques are formed and they usually only use Vibe as the eating spot and then they hang out all around the ship. Can't speak about Edge, as our daughter (and youngest) is 16. As mentioned above, they unfortunately didn't even bother with their usual 1820 Society for the older teens.

I’m curious - was there no 1820 Society specifically because of the Covid protocols? Or might it have been due to not enough of that age group onboard? (Maybe indirectly due to Covid.) This is something that can be iffy in normal times because itvall depends how many of that age as well as the interest level. Some cruises have a very active group while others have none.

Can you say for sure it was DCL that opted to not do the 1820 club? Or was there not enough interest it getting it going? How many 18-20 year olds onboard?

For the 1820 club to function, those interested need to attend the organizational meeting the first night out. If no one shows up, there's no club.

OK, @lanejudy was posting at same time.

I have to assume it was some type of covid-related decision to not have it at all. We did happen to have a brief conversation on the third night with the cruise director, Jimmy. We mentioned our disappointment that they didn't have 1820 at all, and that as a result our son was spending lots of time in the stateroom. He was disappointed to hear that and seemed to genuinely regret that they decided against having it and thanked us a couple of times for that specific feedback. Unfortunately, the conversation was cut short when he got a call from the Captain.
